Let's get this Spring thing rolling

We're back to sunlight and decent temps, after a weird week of one day 50 degrees F, the next day 85, few days later back to gloom. I'm ready! And I'm sure my friends still reporting snow are even more ready!!

The local felines are enjoying sunbeams, and I swear they have Spring Fever. Much commotion in the night, as they wrestle toys and tablecloths, engage in crazy cat races. The dogs are also happy with drier weather and Dog! Walks!!1!!1!! with their favorite human [not me].

Still juggling unbloggable work stuff, lots of it -- some good, some unspeakably bad. Even the bad is kind of moving along, my people are talking and strategizing. (Yes, whining is a tradition in my work. Or, as we prefer, "brainstorming.")

On the hobby front, I accidentally unearthed some great fabric that I had stashed in my clothes closet, which is not where I keep most of the supplies. Woot! Yeah, maybe I'll get around to that spring cleaning thing; who knows what else lurks?

How are things going at your place?

What is this "Spring Cleaning" you speak of? I'm thinking it may be time to visit the dust buffalo that lives under the bed.

AW: Good family doc visit today. We talked about a medication that the Excellent Clinic Doc suggested. It wasn't a drug I am familiar with at all, so I asked him what it was and how it works.

He practically ran into his office and brought back the CPS (Pharmaceutical bible) - then proceeded to tell me waaaaaaaay more than I needed to know.

About three sentences into his info session I knew this wasn't going to be a good drug for me, but I couldn't bear to stop him. He was just so happy that I asked a question!! I guess most people just take the prescription and run...

Anywho - we have a better plan in place. I'll go back to the Clinic sometime in early June if I need to. I'm loving this "Two docs actually agreeing and talking to me" thing.

oh, cool doc visit, sue! and agreement and talking! kudo posse is all over this.

Sue - Yay for the doctor showing the caring side of medical care.

KathyA - spring cleaning is hovering in the air here. I am very afraid.

Whine: For ~3 days I have been dizzy and just on the edge of feeling nauseated. It doesn't get worse and it doesn't get better. Ugh!

YAY SUE'S DOC!!!

W: Weather whiplash. Yesterday it was Ninety!!! Degrees!!! And Sunny!!!

Today it is raining and cold. And dreary. And cold. And raining.

Did I mention the rain?

Sue said...

Whine: funeral today and it is still snowing. There is truly no place colder than a cemetery on a bitterly cold April day.

On the other hand, my heart goes out to the family, so my cold knees pale by comparison. Perspective. It rules.

Sorry to hear about the dizziness Sarah. The worst part of vertigo is that you have no fantastic party to talk about when the world stops spinning. He you get some relief soon!

AW: Youngest son turns 27 today! How can he be 27 when his parents are so young and fabulous? Definitely puzzling...

kathy a. said...

sarah, hope you are feeling better!

liz, bleah on the weather whiplash.

sue, hippo birdie to your baby son!

family of origin dynamics, creepy stalker edition -- a relative known for sending nastygrams in the night looked up my daughter on facebook, and sent her a 2 a.m. messsage along the lines of "if you ever want to know what happened in this family, i will tell you." woo. this relative has not spoken to daughter for over a decade [even at family events], has never asked for her address. daughter prudently decided to ignore the message.

This t-shirt slogan (from The Onion) is my motto this week: What Does Not Kill Me Only Makes Me Whinier.

It's so, so true.

This week, I have a sick toddler (Tater) and a Spring Breaking first grader (Tot). So, since there would be no school today and no day care (due to excessive bogies), I turned off the alarm on my phone last night. Pixies, you can imagine my great surprise when my husband woke me this morning by walking through the bedroom, making my alarm noise.

It sounds a bit worse than it was -- my alarm noise is a gentle bell "bong"ing sound. That said, rly Husband? RLY? Normally he looks to see if I have moved my phone or if the screen is lit before he talks to me, to ensure I am supposed to be awake. Today? Nope. Oy.

At least he slunk (slinked? slank?) out of the room quickly before I could throw something at him. That, pixies, was a good choice.

amy is in line for some awards. not that i pre-judge -- the whining week is still young!

I would smack him like a snooze button.

Sue said...

I'm with Liz. If all he gets is a Cluestick on his Snooze button (please ever to gray's anatomy for location thereof), he will be doing well.

W: My "funeral" suit (black - surprise!) needs an update. Mine is four years old and could technically begin kindergarten. So, I set about to find another. The best one was at the same store the original suit came from. Problem - it's the Same Suit. Ack!!!!

Is it so much to ask for a nice charcoal gray, or even a subtle pin-stripe?

Liz Miller said...

Sue, what's yer body type? And will Nordstrom's ship to you?

amy said...

Sue, the 80s are back now, in case you hadn't noticed, so I'm surprised you were not able to find more charcoal gray. Of course, it'll be paired up with magenta and teal swooshes, with shoulder pads to accentuate... well, whatever shoulder pads accentuate. Hmmm. I guess what I'm saying here is Godspeed and Good Luck!

@Liz, I have made a firm mental note of smacking him like a snooze button for the next time it happens. :D

Liz Miller said...

Sue, look at Nordstrom.com under Women, Suits and Separates. There's a brand called Ingenuity there that has a lovely charcoal sheath dress. Pair that with a jacket, and I think you'll have a winning combo.

kathy a. said...

well, looks like amy's problem with the husband imitating the alarm clock is under control.

oy, suit shopping. liz, do you think a sheath dress + jacket will do it for snow? sue, i vote for getting a new suit in the style that has served, and adding pretty tops, scarves, etc. [uniforms: they work.] although, another color would help.

really, i'm not the person for fashion advice. i've worn the same dress or 2 and a black jacket to ever so many funerals, weddings, court dates, nice parties. i am relieved that most days i only leave the house to run errands.

esperanza said...

oh, amy. That is Wrong.

Yippee for Sue's doctor.

With liz on the see saw weather. Today's range here: 35 F this morning up to 80 this afternoon. Sorry, Sue.

W: Hubby forgot to pick up his prescriptions last night before the pharmacy closed. (related whine: I was AT pharmacy TWICE yesterday, and had he bothered to let me know he needed them, could have gotten them easily. Sigh). He was completely out of the anti-depressant. Today, consequently, has been Indifferent, Unengaged Zombie Town.

AW: at least we know the darn thing is working.

Further AW: He did consent to stay home with Mini while Sweet had Physical Therapy, so Mini could get a decent nap today. (She usually doesn't on Tuesdays)>

Not sure how to classify this: in our small-town newspaper, this week's letter to the editor decries the service in a local nail salon. Really, people? All that's happening in our community and the world, and you're moved to write a letter by your NAILS?

People.

Sue said...

Oooooo Liz, I LOVE that dress!!! I may have to have it for other occasions, but I'm looking for something I could wear with a clergy shirt and collar. I do like that Ingenuity line - it is new to me, and as such, could present a clear and present danger to my credit card. :)

*spits* shoulder pads. Who thought those were a good idea? Ever. And they're back! Ick. Where are my scissors?

Letter to the Editor re: Nails? Someone needs WW....just sayin...Nail whines could go over here as Old Skool. In the newspaper - not so much.

Sue said...

Ack!!!!! Liz, you've created a monster!!!

Check this out:

Sue said...

Me again. The link worked. Now, I only need to do three weddings and a few funerals and I can dream about affording it. But I do Looooooove it.

Plus, I'll watch for sales. You never know...:)

YAY!!!

Go for it!

If whining was a location--it would be the supermarket. I can't be more specific (not because I don't want to, or because it's secret, but because my supermarket whines would totally overtake the post) but, of my routine home/hearth duties, supermarket shopping is clearly the most whine inducing!

Sue said...

What emily said. Supermarkets = ick.

That is all.

Liz Miller said...

AW: Wearing a new bra, new linen sweater, new tank-top, courtesy my mom and Nordstrom's. I am very lucky.

AW: Took a co-worker to Nordstrom's yesterday to be fitted properly. I KNEW she was wearing the wrong bra! She had been in 38DD, and she's really a 34G, just like I am.

Sue said...

Good work Liz! We're like the Properly Fitted Undergarment Advisory Committee...!

kathy a. said...

well, here is all this shopping going on, and i'm still back at totally dreading the jeans shopping. nevermind the nice clothes and undergarment issues.

do you ever have those days where the stuff you planned doesn't get done, but other stuff comes up? yeah. i'm on day 2 of that, and i was supposed to have something done today for review.

esperanza said...

kathy a., do I ever NOT have a day like that?

emily, I hate the grocery store too. My only hope is that both Baboos really like going. Someday, I'm just going to send them alone--they need to be what--5?

Love the suit, Sue. I have big shoulders on a small frame and never, ever liked shoulder pads, even in the 80s.

Sarah at ratatat said...

The grocery store, if you normally go with small children, is almost nice without them. Almost.

A snort out loud week - Liz's snooze button for Amy's husband and Esperanza sending a 5 year old to the grocery store.

And now I wish I had a Nordstrom's nearby. Or even had time to go down to the Nordstrom's only a few hours from here.

W/AW: After being solo with the little one all day Tuesday and solo with all three kids all evening, I was so happy to go back to work Wednesday. That's a sign I like my job, right? And not a statement on how tiring child care can be?

I actually enjoy the supermarket ... once upon a time, I was live-in nanny for a less than fun family that I am closely related to. Due to it being across the country from everyone else I know, my weekly grocery shopping trip for them was my only escape from the unhappy place. Not so strangely, it always took at least an hour. Now - 10 years later - I still find a strange peace at the supermarket.

Liz Miller said...

Sarah, Nordstrom's ships.

And their return policies are super.

I love grocery shopping...but that's prolly because I used to do it in Brooklyn, where the "Super Market" is akin to what you all know as the 7-11.

emily said...

Esperanza--I don't know about five year olds, but my oldest has enjoyed going to the supermarket by herself, ever since she got her license. It's rather amusing because she *hated* going before that (even as a baby).

It's not that I mind the shopping, itself--it's just that so many annoying things happen at the market. The item on sale is out of stock, the clueless people who park their carts sideways so nobody can pass, the fact that no single supermarket in my area stocks everything I need, the "extra" displays that are positioned so as to block traffic, etc. etc.

I recently tried to use a rain check (see 'sale items out of stock') that was worth a fair amount (about $5). The cashier had problems and ended up charging too much, taking off too little to compensate and generally mucking things up. A manager came over to help him (and I felt sorry for the cashier because he was trying very hard and the usual techniques for voiding sales were clearly not working). In the midst of all this, the man behind me says, "here--I'll give you the 30 cents so we can get moving!" I do understand that he was frustrated (*everyone* involved was frustrated) but it just made the poor cashier more frazzled (by this point, I couldn't have said "forget about it" because of the number of errors involved). Finally the manager moved the transaction to a different register, fixed things and sent me on my way (with a bit of an extra discount, which I appreciated!).

So, I wouldn't mind the supermarket, if I could be the only one shopping!

Sue said...

Work-related whine. Why does everything *always* have to be so fireplacing complicated? Why am I doing my own full time job (according to my doc, 40 hours, in reality, 50) PLUS fixing all of the other stuff that gets messed up around here on a daily basis? I so seriously do not need this now.

I can't say what "this" is, but trust me, I don't need it. Ever.

Blarg.

kathy a. said...

when i have houseguests -- doesn't matter how much i love 'em, they all make me a little batty after a while -- i've been known to escape to the supermarket, sometimes more than once in a day.

keep whining! today so far has involved getting stitches out [1 hour commute each way], setting up an IRA account in another city other than my own, unhappy mail from clients, happy but voluminous helpful materials from someone, and a variety of computer problems. and there's something i wanted to finish yesterday, but ha...

Spring = sniffy, sneezing, itchy eyed allergy misery for four of the six of us. Pixies, now is the time to buy stock in antihistamines.

I like grocery shopping by myself or with one child(especially if it's the child that is still small enough to sit in the child seat on the cart instead of running loose) since the wee darlings enjoy the 1:1 time so much.

has informed me that he thought I was "fat for someone on chemo." Off to "smack him like a snooze button." (Thanks, Liz.)

Ahem.

That should say *Redacted*(to protect the guilty) has informed me...

Double smack!!!

Definite cluestick possibility here days....

kathy - I hope the stitch removal isn't too painful.

kathy a. said...

days brings several of the 7 elves...

oh, big smacks, and not the smoochy kind! redacted is certainly in for a cluesticking this week.

sue, this stitch removal hurt like the very devil for the critical seconds, but when it's done, it's over. guess i whimpered more than most, because i got topical pain relief for the last 2 -- hey, what an idea!

amy said...

I know that none of the whining this week is about girl scout cookies, but if I try to hold on to this until gs cookies come up again, I'll surely forget it.

This goes out to all my pixies who don't love Trefoils. You know who you are. (Not me, though. I love Trefoils.)

Days, I hope [redacted] feels that smack every nine minutes. Wow.

KathyA - the last time I had stitches removed, I thought it would be no big deal and then nearly cried. Hate mismanaging my expectations.

kathy a. said...

amy -- i swear i bought 2 trefoils, and they all disappeared, poof! only 3 boxes of thin mints left, and they are for emergency use only.

Sue said...

Topical anesthesia - what a novel idea for a procedure likely to cause, you know, Pain! Dear Universe, but clue, 'kay?

I am channeling Eeyore.

Rough day at the office, so to speak.

Now, choir, which always cheers me up. Thank goodness - I'm seriously b@tchy. It's not necessarily fun to be botchy. (new Pixie lexicon alert)

Sue said...

That should have read "Dear Universe, buy a clue...."

I'm so botchy I can hardly type.

JenR said...

An in-store temper tantrum to match none I have ever seen had us drag a screaming toddler out to the car and then listen to the screaming for nearly 40 minutes before I gave up and literally wrestled him into the car seat. He proceeded to sream about not being able to bucke himself in for 10 minutes at the gas station and then 15 minutes home. I am done listening to screaming. I need to buy earplugs.

The tantrum? He wanted to run away from me in the store and I said no. Cue the screaming (and the running).

JenR said...

*scream* about not beaing able to *buckle*

I don't type carefully when frustrated. The mildly funny part of this? Husband has a throat infection and can barely talk above a whisper. So now our house is eerily quiet while the boy tries to hear what daddy is saying.

kathy a. said...

jenr, eeeks! at least you could pass him off to the [for the moment] "good" parent. and i think that's a hoot, that husband has to talk very softly, and that the household has thus grown quiet. daddy might be saying bad words, but they are quiet. ;)

Sue said...

(((((JenR)))))

Been there. So. Not. Fun.

esperanza said...

Oh JenR, it's something in the air, or the phase of the moon, or something. We had multiple screaming fits here today, over such issues as shoes, hair style, the drinking of milk, and the waking up from the nap. Sigh. May tomorrow be better.

JenR said...

late breaking whine... picked up a bridesmaids dress today and discovered that I need a srapless bra to go with the alterations needed for being 6 months pregnant. I don't know why I didn't notice that when I saw it months ago. At least my shoes are comfortable.

kathy a. said...

jenr, i'll just refer you to liz, the bra specialist -- i'm sure she can come up with a strapless maternity bra. from my perspective -- which is "what is it with the bridesmaid dresses? and why sleeveless?" -- i think you should go with something like a small sweater that covers the shoulders and call it a day. which will totally, permanently ruin the wedding for everyone, should any of them ever remember that detail.

kathy a. said...

oh, i had to take my real computer to the hospital today, and don't think it will survive, and other stuff happened. so, apologies, but awards will either be later tonight or tomorrow.

amy said...

@JenR, What about scrapping the idea of a maternity bra? Just go with a non-maternity bra that fits you at that time. You're probably never going to wear it again anyway, so try to make this easier in every way you can.

Some bra manufacturers make convertible bras, which might work for you, if you feel like you need the extra support at that point. They have clear straps that you could wear up until the ceremony and then after the photos, with a light cover up over your shoulders. That sort of thing would, if this were me, also satisfy that passive-aggressive place in me that would want to draw the bride's attention to the fact that her choices affect other, much more pregnant people than herself. (But, I just woke up and haven't had any coffee, so take that with an entire salt lick.)

@Kathy, I concur with you, regarding the sleeveless bridesmaid dresses. According to my completely made up statistic, only approximately 3% of bridesmaids look good in them, which probably accounts for why brides (sub)consciously choose them. And I wish I could nominate you for an award for your astute observation that wearing something over her shoulders will *gasp* RUIN EVERYTHING. Egad, I hate a fancy wedding. So unnecessarily stressful.

(My apologies if I'm too cranky. See lack of coffee, above.)

Liz Miller said...

Since you need to get the dress adapted for your pregnant belly anyway, ask the bride if you can use some of the material to create straps to hide your bra straps, since strapless bras are not intended to be worn with a bump (this is true, they tend to have a longer torso portion to compensate for lack of straps).

If she says "no", ask re: a bolero jacket.

If she says "no", gracefully bow out, since your pregnancy will make you not match the other bridesmaids in any case.

Liz Miller said...

My sister was my only attendant at my wedding, and I was her only attendant at hers. She had my nephew less than a month after my wedding. I totally let her pick out what she wanted to wear. She chose a beautiful butter yellow maternity dress from JC Penney.

JenR said...

The dress has a narrow halter strap, so adding straps won't really work. I am going to talk to the seamstress about going without the bra since i am not so well-endowed, even when pregnant. We'll see. I was thinking about the clear-strap idea, at least for after pictures. We'll see :-) Thanks for the suggestions.
