This is Liz, letting you know I'll be filling in for kathy a. this week. Kathy's mom has just had a stroke. Kathy, we are all thinking of you and your mom. I hope that she is able to make a full recovery. Sending prayers and love to you.
quick update after a long day is that my mom survived [which they didn't expect]; she is in and out of consciousness, not making much sense when she is awake; the problem is not growing, so no neurosurgery needed; hard to tell the long-term consequences, but she won't be functioning as she was.
the new problem of the moment is that she also broke her hip. surgery to fix the hip is high-risk for a lot of reasons [the stroke is one; also heart problems we found out about today; and etc., etc.] but necessary. that will probably happen monday night.
my stepfather has alzheimers, so when mother went to the ER, he went into the hospital, too -- for his own protection.
we are apparently the family that puts the "fun" in dysfunctional, so today i talked with my stepsister for the first time, and met my stepbrother for the first time. we probably met as kids, but don't remember each other. there is no better bonding than searching the house for legal, medical, and insurance information with a stepsib you don't know; the stuff you find before you locate the search targets makes for interesting conversations. we're all tight now.
my mother and i are estranged, have been for good reasons and a long time. turns out that the sister who was with me and i are now the designated hitters for her health care decisions.
i guess we are all doing as well as we can under the circumstances. many, many thanks for your good thoughts. xoxoxo
p.s -- the house search took 2 hours with 4 people. we looked everywhere, and searched all the file cabinets and file stashes twice. i located the important legal documents in a bookbag that was shoved into a bookcase, right next to some photo albums.
Kathy, I am glad about your mom's prognosis, sad about your estrangement, glad you found new family who seem supportive. Glad also you found her documents.
It took two tries to find the *right* will when my stepfather died. Good thing we didn't show the wrong one to his kids -- they'd have been mad about what it said.
just a hard week. my mom's in bad shape, but being discharged friday. we lined up a nursing home today, one where the attending doc who knows everything will keep seeing her. i'm just so tired. grateful for the good thoughts. xoxo

Q: Is there a mascot? A: Ralph is the mascot.
Q: Are there other traditions I should know about? A: The passing of virtual refreshments is appreciated.
Q: How did this all get started anyhow? A: Phantom Scribbler was our muse and host for two years.

Hugs!
Your anecdotes bring back so many memories of dealing with my grandmother's death. I hope and pray that your mom doesn't suffer during the surgery.
Kathy, hugs and hugs and hugs.
Thinking of you.
