Feverish Ramblings

Yes, that's correct. Mama has a 101 temp *with* ibuprofen in my system. Hit me during the middle of the second church service this morning--chills, aches. This cannot end well.

Grandparents and great-grandmother are here. On the one hand, that's nice to have help with the Baboos and resting time in bed. On the other hand, I do *not* want 93-yr-old to get sick. Silverware meddling aunt is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I just sent her a text explaining the situation.

I sincerely hope no other pixies are experiencing this calamity, but I know you have whines. Lay 'em on us.

So sorry esperanza. I'll toast with plenty of fluids and lots of rest....

oh, esperanza! what sue said.

esperanza said...

Thanks, friends. No better this mornings, so I'm going to the doctor. Who will probably tell me to rest and drink plenty of fluids...

kathy a. said...

esperanza, hope you are feeling better and that nobody else gets sick!

there was a reception honoring one of my favorite colleagues on saturday. and it was really really wonderful. so many other great friends and colleagues from the last 20 years were there, too. i'm kind of isolated, working mostly at the home office in recent years, so this was a grand reunion, very energizing.

tonight is a play written by a friend, and 5 other friends are performing. (must remember flowers.) so, my heart is full, and so is my normally non-existent social schedule.

my to-do list keeps getting longer, though. that's a combo W/AW, since thoroughness is something i'm after in the giant project.

and ooooh, nature anti-whine! we have a beautiful dove nesting in a tree in the back yard! she looks like she has laid eggs!

Here's the verdict (not what I was expecting): UTI, probably of the kidney variety. Prescription: antibiotics and (you guessed it) rest and plenty of fluids.

Relieved it's something treatable and hopefully short-lived, and non-contagious.

Anonymous said...

Wow--esperanza--glad it is something that should be cured quickly with the antibiotics! Hope you are feeling much better very soon!

Thanks, NL. Me too!

Oh Esperanza - a kidney infection I think is the most painful thing I had short of labor. Get well - but total bonus on non-contagious-ness!

KathyA - how lovely!

AW: We had a nice First Communion. The food was good. The guests were kind. My husband came to the lunch, not church, and that was OK.

W: My husband came and did not talk, which was awkward for at least me.

AW: a late birthday present arrived today. woo!

esperanza said...

Sarah, I just told my mom I hadn't felt this bad since I was pregnant with Mini!

Glad to hear the first communion went well. Hubby didn't talk at all? Yes, awkward.

kathy a. said...

esperanza, here's to the antibiotics. xoxo

sarah -- glad the first communion was good! if your husband shows up just to show up for a celebration, that sounds like his problem and nobody else's.

this play turned out to have really a bunch of actors, so i ended up doing little bouquets for everybody. at least, i hope i caught everybody. daughter pitched in. did i mention she's great? the play was good, too.

Sue said...

esperanza - yay for antibiotics, boo for feeling entirely ick.

sarah - what kathy said - his problem, no one else's. I'm glad that first communion went well just the same.

yay for you and daughter kathy - you are truly amazing.

Rough week here - today is the first day in a week that I've really felt even remotely life-like. My head pain hasn't been that bad for years. Hubby thinks it was around 2008 that it was this bad. I have no idea of the trigger (if there was one) or the reason for the spike in pain.

I managed to stay away from the ER because I just couldn't talk myself into going and sitting in the waiting room with my barf bag. Instead I created my lair in the bedroom (dark, no tv, no music, no books...just dark, lots of ice, lots of gravol) and stayed there for several days.

I'm good enough this morning to use the computer for more than 5 minutes (I think I've been on here for about 20 minutes!) - so that's a sign that things are on the way up.

A disappointing way to start sabbatical, but it would have been much worse if I had tried to work through it.

Onward!

esperanza said...

oh dear, Sue. I had no idea. I was hoping you were sabbaticaling (what do you mean that's not a word, spellchecker?) away. Hope you're on the upswing, for sure.

kathy a. said...

((( sue ))) what a crappy way to start sabbatical. i'm glad you are feeling more lifelike. wonder if the intensity of those last weeks contributed? but glad you have this time off.

(((Sue)))

[content note: woowoo psych bullshit theory ahead]

Wondering if your body KNOWS you have the time and space to be in pain this week and thus breached the dams that were holding the pain back during Holy Week?

Akin to teachers coming down with feverish illnesses the week school lets out?

kathy a. said...

i don't think it is entirely BS, liz. something i know about myself is that i muddle through the very worst crises, and then fall apart after. feel the pain i'd been ignoring; turn from a woman of steel to a steaming wreck emotionally.

Oh Sue. I can echo the theory that the only time I got sick in college was on breaks. But what a terrible start of sabbatical. And we'll take 20 minutes of annoying electronic glare not causing a total meltdown to be a very good sign.

AW: Patterns are very useful to me. And tonight when I went to yoga (AW FTW!) I suddenly "got" why I haven't done anything regularly in the evenings for years. (except TV). My husband made this face...and I can still read all of his irritation...but he's here to see the kids and I don't have to respond to that anymore. Hard to explain, but wow, I feel like I've joined a revolution or something.

Yay Sarah for that liberating feeling....

Yay Sarah!!!!!

Liz, that makes a lot of sense. I've been just getting by and pushing through pain to get work done for so long. Now that I'm unscheduled and free to do whatever I want, it's like my body is saying "About Time Honey!!!" and letting the hyper-vigilant walls down.

Makes total sense.

W: Low pressure system coming in tonight. Rain forecast for tomorrow. Boo. Major trigger time.

AW: I don't have to go to work.

kathy a. said...

woot sarah!

esperanza said...

If you will tolerate a whiny hostess....
Things I am tired of: fever, aches, chills, sweating, sitting in bed, feeling sorry for myself.

And, if I may whine about just one more thing: did this really seem like a good time to start my period? Who's in charge of these things?

Liz Miller said...

Oh, ((Esperanza)). But at least you're getting them all out of the way at once, right?

kathy a. said...

liz for the silver lining award!

esperanza said...

Yes, all at once. Double duty for the ibuprofen, too! It's looking like I'm not going to be fever-free by the doctor's 48 hour deadline. (Now at 101, 45 hours). So expect more kidney-related whining from me.

Liz Miller said...

My poor dear. Have you tried drinking hot tea laced with cranberry juice?

esperanza said...

No...that's the thing. I have *no* symptoms of a bladder infection--it's apparently all in the kidney (lots of protein, nitrites and blood in urine sample, if you really want to know that). I'm drinking gallons of water. If fever isn't gone, I'm supposed to call doctor and/or go back. Sigh.

And I was thinking I should probably avoid caffeine--anyone have any wisdom on that?

esperanza said...

Wait, wait. Premature whining. He promised me that 48 hours after I started the antibiotic, the fever should be gone and I should start to feel better. I am not making this next part up: 47 AND A HALF hours after the first dose, the fever went away and hasn't come back, and my days-long headache went away and I do indeed feel a bit better.

Also, AW: I am done, done, done with the after-school program. Not going back next year, done done done.

kathy a. said...

oh, esperaza. glad you are feeling better, but that last one sounds bad.

Sue said...

glad you're feeling better esperanza! Hooray for antibiotics!

W: I made a hair appointment for tommorrow because it has been making me so crazy, there was a good chance that I would pull a tantrum and cut it myself. Naturally, today my hair looks fab.

What to do? Trim the edges, new style?

AW: This is pretty much my biggest whine today. The headache has (mostly) retreated for the time being. Woot!

esperanza said...

OK, this is off the point, Sue, but I have a question: Canadians "pull" tantrums? Here we "throw" them. Hm. Interesting.

Your point was how much better your head feels. To that I say, Hip Hip Hooray!

Liz Miller said...

Hooray for the retreat of UTI and Migraine symptoms!!

kathy a. said...

what liz said! and hair whines are always classic.

W: powers that be seem to be hassling [a] me, and [b] everybody. i'm smelling a stupid "crackdown," which put me off my mojo and disrupted what i meant to do. grr.

W: computer also acting up, and i don't think it is all operator error.

weather report: dreary.

wildlife report: the royal diva persephone continues to guard the fax machine by sleeping on it.

i know, who still has a fax machine?! there are a few things i still must do by fax, though. the machine is also supposed to be a scanner, but that function does not work any more, so it may as well do second-duty as a cat throne. also, it is very impressive sending faxes festooned by cat fur. not everybody can brag of royal office staff.

Aaaand, the whine we've all been waiting for: it took a couple of days, but Aunt Silverware Rearranger has lived up to her name. NL: the silverware tray was plenty dirty, but she did not *clean* the tray, only rearrange the silverware.

AW: it is just the four of us in our house. And will be for the foreseeable future. I am grateful for us.

esperanza said...

There are several contenders for Mullet awards this week...

Sue said...

Curious esperanza....I've heard Canadian critters like me use both "pull" and "throw", but more often "pull". Maybe it's a provincial/regional thing too. They say some stuff in Newfoundland that baffles my grammatical socks off every time.

So Aunt Rearranger didn't clean up in the process. Again - curiouser and curiouser.

kathy - all good cats guard warm electronics. We find that out every time truffle sleeps on the keyboard while the screen turns red.

W: Bought said kitteh a Brand! New! Litterbox! today - so far she has sniffed it, lowered her bum and backed away slowly. This could be problematic....

AW: Went with the "What the Heck it's Summer!" haircut. I whispered ever so quietly (so as not to offend other clients) to my stylist - "Anything but the short elderly woman cut."

Stylist Supreme came through for me again! It's actually cute! And very versatile. I can pretty it up for special occasions or just let it dry as is. Love. It.

kathy a. said...

esperanza -- at least there was a favorite hobby available for aunt silverware.

sue, one of us has a good haircut, so we can count that as a win for the team. ;)

AW: called late to the conf. call from double-hockey-sticks, and nobody was there! wasn't horribly late, either, so it's not just me. W: this is not good for the thing we are trying to do. but AW: maybe the direction of these calls will change to better accommodate reality.

esperanza said...

Not that I talk about people throwing tantrums regularly or anything...actually, around these parts it is more commonly known as "throwing a fit," but "throwing" is always the verb, even if "tantrum" is used. Now that we have that all figured out...as you were.

kathy a. said...

pitching a hissy fit is a variation.

"pulling rank" suggests some authority trumping someone else. "pushing boundaries" suggests not so much authority, but perhaps a righteous argument. i suggest the pushme-pullyou as the team mascot.

esperanza said...

fever back. dr appt made but no childcare found yet. poop.

kathy a. said...

argghhh, esperanza!

esperanza said...

I am the whiniest hostess in the history of whining. But I have pneumonia. Had I neglected to whine about the cough? yeah.

Sue said...

Oh no!! feel better soon espseranza!

kathy a. said...

esperanza! xoxo this is not fair. also, you are not the whiniest hostess. would you care for backup, or a mixed-host ceremony?

esperanza said...

kathy a, YES, please. That would be really wonderful.

And now I will AW about the company of people saving my/our family's collective butts this week, kathy a included. My childcare whine was answered by a friend who was at the doctor with her son. She took the girls for the rest of the afternoon. Someone else is preaching for hubby, who has been home most of the week. And good ol' Aunt Silverware, too. And the doctor, and the local pharmacy, which is a total hoot but man do they offer good service.

esperanza said...

Additions to my whine: Started fever around noon. Hubby in Big City 2 hours away. All at&t cell phones in area not working! All day long! No way to reach him. Ack!

kathy a. said...

one last whine! remember how last year, somebody slid down a cliff, ran through the nature area, hot-wired and stole our car, waved at the police, then crashed the car? resulting in the police pounding on our door at 1 a.m. to tell us about the stolen car?

some jerk-ass so-called legal office (out of state) just sent us a threatening notice that we "owe" $3500 to sn@ke f@rm for an "incident" on that date. there is convenient info about paying by credit card.

These.People.Know.Not.With.Whom.They.Are.Dealing. this is outright fraud. there is no lawsuit, and no basis for a lawsuit against us at all. pissed, we are.

Sarah at ratatat said...

KathyA - wow - take down the idiots! That's crazy.

Esperanza - hugs and TLC and concern. Pneumonia? And a kidney thing? Get well. Soon. Fast.

Sue - yay for summer haircuts. I am growing mine out. Again. And I sort of hate it. And sort of love it, at least about 4 inches from now. Someday I will meet a nice man and he will say, why don't you get a cute pixie cut, you look so cute that way. And I will swoon ;-) (too soon? I am joking my way into the scary future.)

esperanza said...

oh, sorry left that out. Kidney infection is cleared up.
