Turns out, nobody likes a tyrant

The broo-ha-ha from last week is gaining attention from folks who actually have the authority to do something about it.

I'm trying not to gleefully chortle...but I'm not trying very hard.

Meanwhile, several local blogs have written about it, and my blog has over 30 comments. None of them are "I know you are, but what am I?" Which is nice.

What's going on in your neck of the woods?

go, liz! i'm glad that you are getting support, and that there is pushback against the silly tyrants. honorary cluesticks all around!

i whined rather extensively over the weekend, but things have settled down for the time being. except in my head; still trying to unwind there. i may turn to netflix therapy, having already tackled a mountain of laundry, shampooing the carpet, cooking bunches, and various other useful but mindless tasks.

Nice, Liz.

Um, mostly same-old here, except that I have a small, tender lump in one of the mammary glands, that I noticed about a week ago. Since it isn't going away, I decided I'd better get it checked out. Appointment tomorrow. Fun, fun.

And, I have a tooth that's bothering me, which means I may need to go to a specialist and get the root canal redone, in addition to getting crowns on all 4 front teeth.

My body is falling apart. :)

On the plus side, the private school we think we want to put the kids in next year does have openings. We're going to visit this week. So far I've heard only very positive things about the school, from many different people. And, we think we figured out a way to make it work in our budget without having to drop the kids' gymnastics and voice lessons, although it will involve making some serious cuts in other areas and perhaps depleting our savings until DH's next raise.

Sounds good pk (the school bit, I mean). Liz, I say gleeful chortling is very appropriate.

W: Whew, what a Mother's Day. As was documented last week, not my favorite day in the first place. Both Baboos were snotty (still are, actually), so we stayed home from church. Multiple meltdowns, by all three parties. I don't know what was wrong with me, except I had the patience of a gnat, and everything they did was obnoxious and annoying and frustrating and snot-producing.

AW: So, I met Mr. E at the door (almost literally) when he came home and said, "please just trust me when I say I need to leave." I went shopping by myself for the afternoon. The retail therapy and time away seemed to help my mood a bit. Did nothing for the snot.

Sue said...

Liz, count me among the Pixie Chortelers! Yay you!

(PK) - sorry about continued body troubles. It's so hard when our bodies betray us. Good news on the school though!

Esperanza - great self-care! Sorry about the Snottage. Are we talking Moss Green Status, cause that's dangerously close to gross-out city.

AW: one week- no headache worth mentioning. A little bitty hurt yesterday, but not enough to want an advil or anything. Yay!!!

W: You know those people who just suck the energy out of you by being in the same room? I have ne of those in my congregation. She means well, but she "wants to see me" this week because she has "some ideas". * head on desk*

Whenever she leaves my office, I just feel drained. I already give her time boundaries (I have a half hour. What would you like to talk about?) and make it clear that I'm already overwhelmed with work. She doesn't get it. When she leaves, I will have a list of people to call and things to do.

Ugh!

esperanza said...

Ugh is right, Sue. But hooray on the headache status.

And, unfortunately, moss green is fairly accurate.

Liz Miller said...

Sue, "Those are great ideas! Why don't you call those people and do those things and get back to me with your progress."

Sue said...

Liz, I'm working up to that. It's taken me a few years to get the time boundaries in place. This one is a Hard Core Energy Suck, even for a church lady.

Liz Miller said...

You're doing great. Can you ask the church secretary to sit in on the meeting with you?

Sue said...

Ah, good idea Liz! I'll give it a try....

AW: Lots of hammering and drilling going on downstairs, but at the end of the day we will have high-efficiency lighting all the way through the church. Yay eco-church!!!!

kathy a. said...

PK, good on the school! good luck with the other stuff. dental whines always get my vote.

esperanza -- mommy times outs are essential!

sue, that's great about the absent headaches! love the ideas of delegating to the church lady herself, and having a witness.

i wonder if in the future, she'd be willing to do a memo or something before the meeting, so at least you know what you're up against? that might help you be "better prepared" and "more responsive" to her concerns on the spot.

purple_kangaroo said...

Sue, often people like that appreciate being commissioned to carry out their own Very Important Ideas.

I just got done at the dr. She agrees the lump is a lump and wants me to get an ultrasound on it even though it's most likely to be something benign.

kathy a. said...

PK, ultrasound is easy. as one of the sisterhood of lumpy [benign] breasts, crossing fingers!

Liz Miller said...

Sending hopes for fibrousness, PK.

kathy a. said...

early nomination of liz for mullet!

Liz Miller said...

I'm not eligible this week. Host.

You'll just have to work harder.

Anonymous said...

PK,
I remember once being told that tender lumps are better than non-tender ones in general. Crossing fingers for you.

kathy a. said...

darned rulz... well, i think "fibrousness" is funny, so there. ;)

pixies, i'm in desperate need of teh silly and funny, to counteract this black cloud from my SIL's impossible problems. the "useless fretting" button in my brain is stuck. aaaarrrggghh!

Liz Miller said...

Well, teh silly is in full force on fb today.

My status is: "We're the People's Front of Judea...The only people we hate more than the Romans are the Judean People's Front."

purple_kangaroo said...

Thanks, everyone . . . I know with my age (early 30s) and the fact that I breastfed for 5 years, my risks are minimal. There is, however, a very strong (extended) family history to tip balances toward the risk category.

purple_kangaroo said...

It's most likely that it will turn out to be nothing, but it will be days or weeks before I know one way or the other, and then even if the tests come back OK the dr. wants to see me back every month for a couple of months to make sure it's not growing. I really needed more stress and uncertainty in my life right now, you know.

kathy a. said...

NL, my doc said the same thing. i've had this same benign lump [2:00, left breast] for about ever. it used to have some tenderness, but that faded.

PK, when i've had ultrasound -- followup to mamm -- the results were quick. it makes sense to monitor for changes, especially with some risk factors, but don't lose sleep. xoxo

Sue said...

Hope all goes well PK.

My getyerselfbusy lady was a no show today. PK, that is largely the problem with her. She has zero desire to put her great ideas into action herself. I've done backflips for ten years trying to "draw out her gifts" (to use church-speak). What she really wants is to be applauded for a fabulous idea without having to lift a finger. There is always a reason why she can't follow through.....so someone else has to make it happen.
Ack!!!!

Whatever....

W: burned my tongue on yummy supper made by hubby. Ouch.

Liz Miller said...

PK, when I've had ultrasounds on my breasts, the doctor was able to give me the results right away (like for pregnancy).

Sending many hugs.

Sue, that is so frustrating.

esperanza said...

Another lumpy breast manager here. I actually had an ultrasound and a biopsy together. Since the doctor did the u/s, he was pretty sure it was benign and told me so right then. The biopsy took a couple of days.

Sue, I had a boss like that...

W/AW: Weaning Mini this week. She's just been nursing at bedtime and is seeming pretty unenthusiastic, as am I. Daddy will be home a few nights in a row (a sadly rare occurence), so this is the week. 15 months, which is exactly how long I pumped for Sweet. Must be my limit.

kathy a. said...

fwiw: steve martin movies are a good distraction.

sue, let's just give your church lady a clue x 4, anyway.

ok, mini!

Sue said...

Yep, a Quad-Cluestick might make me feel better.

No whines today really. It's going to be a long day, with a meeting this afternoon and another tonight, but whatever...it's a living, and I'm thankful for that.

AW: I transferred some birthday money into Eldest Son's account yesterday. I felt really blessed to be able to do that. The best part is that he's so appreciative about gifts - both of the boys are. Someone appears to have taught them manners and graciousness along the way.

Who did that anyway? :)

kathy a. said...

AW: going to lunch with an old friend and colleague! a down side of the old home office is that i never see anyone, so this is exciting.

Sue said...

Yay kathy a.! have fun!

Note to self: NEVER look at this website at work.

Just sayin... :)

purple_kangaroo said...

Ooh, goody, I get a mammogram AND an ultrasound! Never had a mammogram before (I'm in my early 30s). And it's going to be Monday, which will be during AF, most likely (she's due Friday or sometime this weekend).

kathy a. said...

PK, the mamm squishing only takes a few seconds per image. [usually 4 images, but there might be do-overs.] being that you are in an ouchy place already, you might take some advil beforehand, as a precautionary measure. the ultrasound is easy peasy -- they'll do that after the mamm.

Sarah at ratatat said...

Not to say it is a good club, but I had the mammo ultrasound combo a few weeks ago. Got the all clear right away. Still a few nibbles of worry (it was pain not a lump), but glad to be through the woods. Hope it all turns out okay PK. And that your teeth feel better too. What a week!

Sue - the absence of headache, and the loving, responsible son and even the Church Lady missing your meeting - yay (boo on the church lady scheduling said meeting)

Liz - thinking good things about the cluesticking to come for certain political persons who have tried to mess with you.

Esperanza - glad you got step away. It makes coming back OK.

KathyA - yay for lunches with colleagues.

Whine: I really want to plan a vacation.

kathy a. said...

oh, we all need a vacation!

the lunch with my friend was really great. the colleague part meant we could talk about the work stuff freely, and the friend part meant that we could catch up and talk about everything else -- kids, family, angst, joy, memories. we remember each other's kids as kidlets; we know a lot of shared stuff from way back.

Liz Miller said...

BTW, I'll be awarding on Friday. Tomorrow I'm spending the day in Arlington helping to get ready for Lunafest.

Sue said...

W: friend drunk-dialed me. Late. Way too late. Ugh.

Sue said...

Here's to hoping that she won't remember that I (sort of) hung up on her after the first half hour.

esperanza said...

Wow, Sue, that hasn't happened to me since college. Bad memories of a former boyfriend...

Hope you can catch up with a nap.

kathy a. said...

oy. a half hour is a long time to give to a too-late caller.

in the rodent category, junior dog tucked another dead one into her bed in the garage. she can only catch the reckless teens, the ones who think they're invicible and make jokes during the squirrel safety filmclips.

I am sick of being sick during this pregnancy... ear infection, sinus infection, a cold, endless headaches, another sinus infection, bronchitis (that one's still not gone!) and now... several swollen and painful lymph nodes on the back of my neck and nothing they can do about it. Can I just go nap for the next 4 months?

kathy a. said...

great. it's working again, but they lost a bunch of comments...

amy said...

Booo! I wondered if they'd be lost, kathy. I've been trying to get in since yesterday.

I'm joining the mammogram club too, so I appreciate the conversation going on. Makes me feel a bit less worried about it, knowing I've got ladies to commiserate with.

My whine is old. My mom is still pushing buttons. I bought her a microwave last week because her stove is broken and her microwave died. She's been without the ability to warm food for 4 months, so I took matters into my own hands. She opened the microwave and thanked me, but she left it here. It's been in my living room for a week because she's "cleaning off her counter to make room for it." Whatever. I hope my gesture is good for some karma points, at least.

Liz Miller said...

Mammograms are fine. If you have bodacious tatas, you should ask your doctor to order a comprehensive mammogram to avoid having to go back for a second go-round.

Liz Miller said...

Blogger lost a whole post of mine from two days ago.

kathy a. said...

oh, amy. no good deed goes unpunished.

i'm almost done editing 60 pages of egregious writing.

Liz Miller said...

Awards will not be given until all comments are restored (Blogger is working on it). If that takes until next week, so be it.

Until then, keep whining.

The "bodacious tatas" comment about made me fall off my chair laughing. I'm in the "34 nearly A" category here. A training bra would probably fit me about right if it weren't for the rib circumference. I'm not exactly sure what they're going to find to squish.

Liz Miller said...

P_K, I have heard from friends that, for those less generously endowed, mammograms are a bit more uncomfortable. However, it's also over faster.

emily said...

I have been out and about lately and that means....public toilets! I am shocked at how many women have not learned the golden rule of the bathroom ("if you sprinkle/while you tinkle/please be neat/and wipe the seat")

I made a point of going into Upscale Department Store where I Could Not Afford to Shop to use the facilities, expecting to find them all fancy. Well, they were fancy (granite counters! modern lamps! cushy upholstered chairs!) but *every* seat was spattered. Yuck!

Liz Miller said...

emily, it may be the intensity of the flushing mechanism. Lots of toilets spit.

kathy a. said...

sad incident at the drugstore, wherein the checker gave change [to a cstomer ahead of me] for a $20 instead of a $50, then got all kerfluffled x 3 about figuring the new amount, then accidentally gave the $50 bill back to the customer [instead of a $20], etc. this checker is nice and tries, but it even confuses him when one brings a bag from home. i don't want to complain about him, because i'm sure his job security is poor, and unlike some other checkers, he does try.

my real whine is that the store has gone to heck since giganto-pharm bought it out. poorly staffed; terrible selection. the manager-oids seem a lot more concerned with paperwork than keeping customers.

esperanza said...

Oh, I'll chime in with public restroom whines! Picture a petite Sweet Baboo, not a potty fan in the best of circumstances, perched on the edge of the seat (agree with emily on the prevalence of sprinkles of unknown origin). Then add in one of those infernal, cursed automatic flushers, that are supposed to flush when you remove your (at least 100 pound) behind off the seat. A small baboo, perched on the seat, is insufficient to forestall the auto flush. And then it flushes with enough force to suck a small baboo into the toilet, scare her from ever using a public toilet again, and prevent the purpose of visiting said toilet in the first place. Also scares little sister baboo.

kathy a. said...

oh, emily for the golden throne award! (one of my offices had that very motto pasted above the toilet. yes, the toilet.)

kathy a. said...

omg, esperanza. i don't even know what to call that award, but you and teh baboos deserve one for sure.

Sue said...

Oh, awards for icky public loos for Emily and Esperanza and the poor baboos!

esperanza said...

AW: in fairness, I should say that auto sink faucets, auto soap dispensers, and (most of all) auto paper towel dispensers, have made the hand-washing a very popular activity.

W: How sad are we, that we are spending our Friday night discussing public restrooms.

Days said...

AW: Received the most wonderful and thoughtful of surprise packages this week, which very much brightened our days. There truly aren't the words to express my appreciation. Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

Purple_Kangaroo said...

All of my kids went through stages where they were deathly afraid of public toilets for that reason. The auto-flushers go off unexpectedly for me, too, and I'm. (usually) over 100 lbs.

kathy a. said...

woot, days!

JenR said...

Ouch ... my post was a lost one. It basicaly said that I am sick of being sick while pregnant. Since I wrote it, the problem is worse - now the whole chain of lymph nodes from the middle of the back of my head down to the bottom of my neck are swollen and painful. It hurts to hold my head up, and hurts more to rest it since I can't see to find a position where a pillow doesn't touch a sore spot. So - barely any sleep for me. I'm not looking forward to standing up in a wedding today with this going on. Oh - the pregnancy part of this means there is no painkiller I can safely take that will actually work.

To add to the fun, we goofed off all day yeasterday and left our house a mess. On the way to the rehearsal dinner we got a call that there is a showing at 10 am. That sigves me 2 hours from now unti I leave for my hair appointment to get this place cleaned up. Eek.

JenR said...

should be : I can't seem to find a position where a pillow doesn't touch a sore spot.

Esperanza: I have heard that those toilets often work withthe help of a visual sensor of some sort on the back. You can supposedly disable it with a post-it note stuck over the sensor. It's probably worth a try.

Sue said...

Oh JenR - that sounds awful! Gentle pixie pats on the shoulder (not the head, that might hurt on the neck).

Days - Yay!!!!!

Post-its over the toilet sensors - proof once again that the smartest people in the world are Mamas.

emily said...

I just realized--the "golden" rule is particularly apt for the situation.

purple_kangaroo said...

((JenR))

kathy a. said...

oh, jenr. hope the wedding goes well, and you can get some rest after.

love the tip about stickie-notes! in my opinion, they are higher in the pantheon of useful items than duct tape, and easier to carry in a purse.

kathy a. said...

i am so confused. the last time i looked, blogger said 59 comments, and now it says 55. but the lost comments are still stranded on a desert island somewhere. as these are Pixie comments, i'm sure they are tending more toward a swiss family treehouse than lord of the flies, but perhaps blogger should be aware of the cluestick function on this particular blog.

Liz Miller said...

If your whine was one lost in the ether, please re-whine. Awards tonight.

emily said...

esperanza--I think of you whenever I see an automatic flush toilet:-).

My kids hated them too. Fortunately, they were rare when the older two were small so we just avoided them (yes, I knew which bathroom in our regularly frequented places had which type of toilet--it's no wonder I can't remember where I put things...)

With the youngest, I usually had an older sibling with me who could cover the sensor (while I held the child). I didn't find out about the post-it trick until we were passed this stage. (Although the other day, I had this misfortune to use a malfunctioning unit and it flushed three times while I was using it--I wished I had a post-it handy!)

Also--as a data point--Target has much cleaner restrooms (on average) than Upscale Department Store.

kathy a. said...

lost whine: editing 60 pages of egregious writing. additional whines: that was just part of a bigger wad-o-bad-writing, so i'm still going. two weeks ago, the writer was all "go,go,go, i'm in a hurry!" but today, it turns out he is booked solid on other stuff for a while, so no rush. sigh.

AW: lunch with my colleague last week was so very good -- 2.5 hours of catching up on all kinds of things. he had some very kind and insightful words, too, which drove back some of the creeping (unbloggable) work dissatisfaction.

esperanza said...

emily, thanks for the pointer. We are FAR FAR FAR more likely to be using the potty in Target than Upscale Anywhere.

kathy a. said...

sorry, my 60-page whine isn't missing, but nearly 2 days worth still are.

Purple_Kangaroo said...

Yay! Apparently I just have fibrous, highly-textured tatas. No biopsy needed, and I got the results of the mammogram and ultrasound immediately. They did see some small calcifications on the *other* side, but nothing that's likely to turn into anything significant.

Purple_Kangaroo said...

The school visit, on the other hand, was not quite as encouraging . . . since our goal for our children is not that they become perfect little robots, exactly.

DH and I both got very weird vibes visiting the school, watching the children and talking with the headmaster. We're not completely ruling it out yet (first impresions *can* be wrong), but we're looking at other options.

kathy a. said...

yay for good results! and it is a good idea to shop around, if you aren't liking the vibes at this school.

esperanza said...

hooray, pk!! And sorry about the creepy school visit.
