Over-Scheduled, Over-Tired Whining

AW: Sweet reportedly had a great day at school today, in which she talked (!), interacted with her fellow students (!), and may have looked interested in thinking about participating in group singing (sign of the end of the world).

AW: She also rode the horse for an hour straight.

W: Then she crashed. Hard. Meltdown at bathtime, which continued into bedtime. Sigh.

AW: We may be about 75% certain on a school decision for next year.

W: That's because the developmental pediatrician may have gotten it through Mama's thick head that Sweet simply isn't ready for Kindergarten, in any sphere. I've pushed her before, and it hasn't gone well, so I'm working on myself about this.

W: I'm afraid Mini is getting the short shrift right now. Working on that too.

What are your whines, pixies?

we get these ideas that all kids reach certain points at certain times -- lot of pressure. and sometimes it just isn't the right time for a particular kid. that kind of decision might not even be hard in 6 months; the school year cut-offs are arbitrary.

better for everyone if a kid feels really good about K than feeling overwhelmed. in my opinion. xoxo

Yes. You are very right. I don't want her to be miserable and decide she hates school. That will make for a long 13 years, yanno? Me, I loved school. Which is part of what is making this hard. Not about me. Not about me. Not about me.

you're an awesome mom! xoxo

last call for beekeeper's apprentice, over on wednesday book club! next up is: 4/10/13 - Wild, by Cheryl Strayed (Sue)

Sue said...

(((esperanza))) - you are, indeed, a great mom.

kathy a. - you have answered my question from the book club site. I will post the beginning of our discussion on "Wild" later today!

AW: After looking at some old photos, I thought "Gee, I wonder what E and B are doing these days." Both of these women were in my wedding party.

AW: E worked for many years for the OAS and has moved on to a position in Cyprus with the UN.

W: B is the second in command to the top d-bag at Es*on. Yes, that one, the company that recently paid about fifteen cents for destroying more of the earth. She is one of the people in charge of ensuring that the company remains untouchable.

Ugh.

Sometimes those go*gle searches don't work out.

In other news....

W: Back to work and overwhelmed (thus checking in here while I take a few deep breaths).

sue, hear ya on ye olde g00gle! i'm really happy to have reconnected with some old friends in recent years. but on the other hand -- the boy i dated freshman year turned out to be a nearly psychotic and rabid right-wing loudmouth wannabe. kind of a rush, jr. ick.

no emergency calls about SIL! helping beloved with some of the massive amount of paperwork to establish a conservatorship. could write a book about the ex, but will try not to do it here. :)

think my daughter is on an upswing! she got compliments at her volunteer job yesterday, is adding another day per week to the schedule, is more aggressively pursuing job apps. yay!

Sue said...

Glad for no emergencies kathy! Yay for daughter and her volunteer job!

The post is up over at the Book Club - do join in everyone.

You're making me glad I have the most bland last name in the English language. Hard for anyone to be disappointed after G'ing me; too hard to find me!

W: cranky Sweet (only with me; cooperative with three therapists). Cranky Mini. Cranky Mama.

AW: early bedtime! Obviously tired Baboos, as they both fell asleep instantly.

W: Muffin Man's pits have started to stink. I'm not ready for this.

esperanza -- pretty much every third girl of my generation was a kathy. :)

liz -- prize worthy!

Lol Liz! Definitely award worthy. I remember it well.

Still having a flareup. And still dealing with insurance companies etc. trying to get things put back together here.

one of the toilets has developed that thing where every 15 minutes, it decides the tank needs to be topped off. i'm pretty sure that means it needs a new doohickey.

i was severely mocked the other night for trying the "jiggle the handle" method. but going to the hardware store for doohickeys is one of the beloved's favorite hobbies; hate to deprive him of this fabulous opportunity.

kathy a. said...

cluesticks to insurance companies! and to the person who caused all the mess in the first place. PK, hope you are feeling better, and that the damage is soon repaired. xoxo

esperanza said...

PK, insurance whines are award-worthy every time when I'm in charge. Even if they are courteous, it's just a big pain.

Liz, stinky pits--eek! I think Sweet's tooth might be wiggling a bit. I'm similarly not ready for that.

W/AW: Sweet is having great days at school and therapy this week: cooperative, interactive, talking. And horrible days at home. Ugh. I know, I know, she's letting her hair down at home because she feels safe, blah, blah, blah. It still isn't so nice on the receiving end of unreasonable behavior.

I hear you , on the great at school and unreasonable at home. Just saying.....

Hugs, NL.

Hugs to everyone with family members who are great away and cranky at home.

The weather is gorgeous! But all of a sudden, hot for here in the late p.m. (No AC.) And all this pollen! Grasses all over the nature area behind us. The little oak tree outside my office -- you don't think of them as flowering, but the thing is covered in little hanging bunches of pollen. Achoo!!

Sue said...

*whiny voice*

"Aaaawwww.....kathy has pollen and green graaaaasssss. It's not fair!!!"

That whine almost morphed into a tantrum.

We still have snow on the ground. Our son can't fly to Toronto tonight as planned because they are slammed with an ice storm. I'm still wearing a hat and gloves everywhere I go. I'm a little tired of my hat and gloves.

Universe - enough already. Send pollen - stat!!

esperanza said...

Sue, I will happily donate our oak pollen, our pecan pollen, our grass and tree and weed and shrub pollen to your cause. Ah-choo!

Seriously, sorry about the travel problems for your son, and the hat and gloves and cold. Weird.

Rain rain rain rain rain
Rain, cold. rain rain rain. cold rain.
Rain rain rain rain rain

Haiku describing the weather here. It's yucky, and my mood is starting to match it.

Also, am I the only one this happens to? I know that word is spelled correctly, but now that I typed it 15 times, it looks wrong.

esperanza said...

You're not the only that happens to, JenR. Sorry about the cold rain. Blech.

Small rant: speech therapist was trying to encourage me today: "I rarely see 29 week preemies who have this much language skill."

Duh. If they have good language skills then they aren't coming to speech therapy, are they?

Throwing a giant party for myself with those I hold near and dear to me is a bucket list kind of thing for me. I am doing it tomorrow. I am excited. So very excited. And, if things go well, I may have some good news by next week. If it is meant to be. Gosh, some of this relationship stuff is hard when you get older and everyone has baggage.

W: I am doing all the planning myself. There is a lot to do.

AW: The kids have finally started to help out. Young Adult Son has been a trooper. Teen Daughter helps as her depression allows. Tween Son is trying to help as much as he is able. My friend from Baltimore is coming in tomorrow.

W: I love him dearly but I am not sure how helpful he is, if you know what I mean. I need someone I don't have to direct. He is not the type to entertain.

AW: EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE.

kathy a. said...

YAY, MIRANDA! happy birthday!

it will be a great party! and it will not matter if every sparkle in your imagination happens -- it will not matter if something goes wrong at the last minute, because something always does, and it will be great anyway. your friends will be there, and that's what matters. it will be wonderful!

so, a couple years ago, my favorite baby cousin made me the "event coordinator" for his wedding (at the last minute), because the venue required someone to be in charge. the platters they bought for the caterer weren't strong enough for the food. the bride and groom arrived an hour late for setup, so improvisation happened. we noticed last-second that nobody had made a bridal bouquet -- the bride planned to do that in the spare time she no longer had -- so one was assembled from the centerpieces, and it was lovely. i accidentally started a small kitchen fire, which someone put out without need for the fire department. the groom decided last-minute that he wanted to be escorted down the aisle by his mom, so i gathered her from the audience and she did not have a heart attack. a few things broke. it was great anyway!

SIL update -- no emergency calls!

and i am so in love with the big U teaching hospital people, who did the medical form for the conservatorship proceedings really fast. when my mom had her terrible stroke -- something similar took weeks, even though i was working it.

W: I just feel like crying. Neighbor Boy is having yet another rage filled meltdown (tantrum). I don't even know what to do anymore. He's 9, and he is having a very hard time managing his anger, but I don't even know what he's angry about, and he says he doesn't either, but little things will set him off. But only at home.

Which I guess is something.

But is still really hard.

And I don't know how to help him. And I feel like a horrible mom.

And the dr. thinks this is not anything to be too worked up about. (which I am hoping is true)
ANd I say that he is acting like my father used to act when I was a kid.

And Neighbor Guy, rightly, points out that that is because my father has the emotional capacity of a 9 year old boy.

Someone please tell me this too shall pass and I will get my sweet boy (and he really really is) back!

nine--the new two--who knew?

(((( neighbor lady )))) you are a very good mom! he is having a rough time, and it is hard to figure out why with kids -- or it could just be some passing thing, not that it makes the moments any easier. maybe he just does not have the words yet (and i'm not low-balling his abilities; but emotional language is a harder thing...).

you are seeing how your own buttons are being pushed, and that is good even if it hurts like heck. i had an acting-out parent, too, and really understand the extra pain that goes along. xoxo

it will pass. definitely. sending love and chocolate.

Liz said...

(((NL))) Stupid question...could he have an infection of some kind? Bladder, sinus, ear?

Anonymous said...

Kathya. thank you so much for the words of support and understanding!! And the love and extra chocolate are always welcome!

As are the hugs liz--thanks! Not a bad question. Nothing I can think of--no complaints of pain, except leg sometimes--maybe it's a growth spurt???

ALso, he has always been quite a shy guy--in kindergarten he didn't talk at school for about 3 weeks or more--turns out he was also having trouble with a kid in his class semi-bullying him. (i don't use the term bullying loosely, being a teacher, but that's pretty much what it was).. He also tends to be quite rule-bound at school especially, and his cohort is, shall we say, not.
I think maybe he's trying to figure out where he fits in.
And maybe isn't.
He also has just started to wear his fingernails painted black, to look more "like a rocker" (he plays guitar) and has apparently gotten a few comments at school.
So hard to know--just hoping I can figure out how to help him through it, or he can figure out how to help himself.....
Ugh

also, Miranda, I hope your party is fabulous!

JenR - sorry about all the rain. Gah!

Miranda - hooray for you for the big party! It will be lovely, I'm sure of it.

Liz - you can organize my big events anytime!

Kathy a - great news on the SIL front. Pixie award of honor to the University medical team.

NL - so sorry about your difficulties right now. You are a good mom! Here's hoping its a passing phase or something he can share with you so that you can sort it out together.

AW: had the privilege of spending the afternoon with a truly lovely person. She reminded me that i have the Best. Job. Ever.

Teen Daughter and I had a mother-daughter shopping marathon. With some careful bargain hunting and ingenuity, we bought a few items that finished of my living room and pulled together my decorating scheme of round, abstract, and seaside (it works). We have lots of food and beverage. I have three things I am making tomorrow and the house is getting cleaner. Work even left me alone (mostly) today. That is rare.

I have more to say but I'm going to ride my AW into dream land.
