Stockings are finished, that was v. fun! I'm keeping a spare just in case someone extra shows up, but that person had better have a sense of humor, since this is the cactus stocking. If my MIL calls on 12/23 and says "I'll be there tomorrow" (yes, that has happened before), we may need to do something more normal.

My house is a train wreck. Daughter says she will help with the holiday cleaning, but won't accept pay. yay! Somehow, zero heavy cleanup happened this weekend. boo...

Cross fingers for daughter! She has an interview today with a temp agency, for a job with a great local non-profit. (And if that job does not work out, she needs this contact with the temp agency.) It has been a long discouraging year of job-hunting.

What's going on with you?

AW: at lunch with Redzils!!

Anti-whine - lunch with our liz! Hurray!

WOOOT! Pixie meetup!

esperanza said...

hooray for pixie lunches!

I would have stepped in to host this week, but (W) our internet is still wonky. Our resident geek has been unable to fix it as of yet. I'm hoping he will call in reinforcements.

esperanza said...

BTW, I am sitting in the public library parking lot on their wifi at the moment. Thankful for my tax dollars at work.

kathy a. said...

yay, wifi!

Interview went well; she'll hear tomorrow about this job, and the temp person wants to keep her in mind. She has suddenly reconsidered her position on "no more internships," seeing how her resume is really too sparse. (Like mama said -- apparently she needed other sources, such as this nice person at the temp place.)

Daughter had meltdowns to and fro: no breakfast; left late; parked in wrong place; wasted $5 going out to find parking space #; caved to a street person selling a train ticket on the way back. She did not get a parking ticket; we will practice saying "no" to street scams; the train ticket worked.

Sue said...

Yay for good interviews, but boo for meltdowns. I hope there is good news soon.

Yay for pixie lunches!!!

AW: Remember my colleague/friend who was so upset with me about pointing out saftey hazards? She called yesterday to invite me out for coffee this week. Progress!

Stressing about prezzies.

My mom wants a framed picture of MM and me. When the hell am I gonna be able to get that done?

kathy a. said...

yay, Sue!

Liz -- easy peasy. Shoot a bunch of photos so you can pick the best one. Print at the photo machine at the drug store. Buy a nice pre-made frame with mat (possibly also available at the drug store).

Liz Miller said...

Thanks! Will do.

Liz Miller said...

Question: Should I buy Then Again Maybe I Won't now and hold it until the time is right or wait and buy it later?

kathy a. said...

You might just want to keep your eye out for a nice frame of appropriate size. What you don't want is for the need to arrive, and then learn that only tacky frames are readily available. (There are a number of self-inflicted tacky frames on my own walls.)

Sarah said...

Frames will probably cost more than the photo. Good luck, Liz. Even it it isn't "hard" it is mentally time consuming. Almost to eh point of making it worth going somewhere and paying for more than it's worth...

W: Christmas shopping is not going well. I think I have a plan, just haven't sat down and mapped out what I can buy locally, when I hit the Amazon deadline...

AW: if I have to buy everything locally, it is OK by me. Yes working for a chamber of commerce has infiltrated my brain.

AW: Still enjoying the lovely feelings of hanging out with someone I really like and enjoying having him like me.

W: yeast infection? I hate that question mark...

PK, what's going on for you? xoxox

i'm sick about another shooting incident.

sarah -- yay, local shopping! and yay, someone you like, who likes you back!

W: daughter didn't get the job. the temp person said "the other person" had 7 years experience. AW: this temp agency person was pulling for her, despite not having enough work references. some internship and/or volunteer stuff could go a long way...

Anonymous said...

Kathy a--so sorry your daughter didn't get the job! :(
Good vibes sent to you and her for some good luck on the job front....
On the holiday front, you have totally inspired me to make stockings for my parents who are coming to celebrate Christmas at our house. Never had them growing up, but could be fun---so we are felt shopping this weekend.
(What do you use to fasten the decorations on the front--just craft glue? or are they sewn?)

aw/w: we are crazy busy here in the midst of hanukkah (which is fun!). But still trying to prepare for shipping gifts, ordering them etc. for teh Christmas thing (since my extended family celebrates it but I don't) doing photo books etc etc etc. I guess the whine is that there seem to be a whole lot of etceteras!

aw: tomorrow night, instead of making sufganiyot (fried donuts), we are going to try to make something called ebelskivers (little round puffed filled pancakes). I bought a special pan for them this weekend, and have been having SO much fun saying "ebelskivers" (pronounced eeebelskeevers, as far as I know) all week!!!! Hope they work!

aw: son is currently practicing trumpet in the living room, playing klezmer! (complete with intermittent "hey!'s" ) love it!

Hugs to all the pixies!!!!

--Neighbor Lady

"ebelskiver"--heehee No, seriously, try it--it's so much fun to say!
:)

kathy a. said...

mmm! eeebelskeeevers! we'll need a recipe. and yay for trumpet practice, complete with "hey!"

the stockings are easy and fun! i sewed the edges and loops, but all the felt + zigzag decor is attached with iron-on tape (stitch-wichery). embellishments rely on glittery fabric paint.

esperanza said...

eebelskeever, eebelskeeber, eebelskeeber. You're right, NL! Kudos to you for the double-holiday busy-ness. One is plenty around here.

purple_kangaroo said...

I always forget how miserable I generally feel all winter (chronic health issues, poor immune system combined with cold/flu season, and stunningly poor cold weather tolerance ), table on things that seem manageable in another season when I'm generally feeling better, then don't know how I'll survive the winter, much less actually keep up with everything else.

Awful tragedies do tend to put my own whines in perspective a bit , though. Doesn't bring down my pain/fatigue levels, but makes it seem less the end of the world.

purple_kangaroo said...

Take on, not table on. Posting from phone.

Sue said...

eebelskeever, eebelskeever, eebelskeever. (note: I tried saying this out loud. It doesn't work like beetlejuice - the eebelskeever did not appear. Wah.)

Yes. Recipes.

AW: Two recent ventures into the kitchen area of our home did not result in gross bodily harm.

Sorry about your daughter and the temp job kathy. Next time...

W: Alone in the church today and praciticing the alto line for our cantata on Sunday. It sounds better with the whole alto section and the sopranos on melody. And the tenor and bass sections.

Ya. It's pretty awful as a solo.

kathy a. said...

PK -- i'm so sorry about the pain and fatigue sneaking up. i think a lot of us have a harder time in winter, between the cold, the colds, the short hours of sunlight, etc., and it has got to be worse when that is exacerbating chronic conditions. can you unload some of the plans? xoxo

sue -- can you practice with earphones and a recording? i'm sure you aren't as bad as you might think, echoing through an empty church; but choirs somehow make 99% of us sound better. strength in numbers!

I haven't shipped out any presents yet (aside from the ones I ordered online to be shipped from there).

Nor have I wrapped any presents.

Nor have I packed up presents into shipping boxes.

Nor have I labelled any boxes with addresses.

It's 12/13 people!!! I have a meeting tonight (for a volunteer thing I resigned from - this is the last meeting I'll be attending) and I'd really rather stay home and get my Christmas together. You know?

kathy a. said...

It's OK, Liz! If you can and if they work size-wise, get the FREE priority mail flat-rate boxes from USPS -- three great features: free box, flat rate, and they get there in usually a couple/few days.

But in any event: have a wrap-a-thon. Box 'em up. Recycle that packing material in these boxes, if needed. Slap or write the labels on. Good family activity.

Liz Miller said...

Thank you, Kathy! I will!!!!

kathy a. said...

I am such a fan of USPS. Srsly. I sent a couple of things priority mail yesterday, and got there at an off time -- so easy, even though these things did not fit in the beloved flat rate boxes. I just answered "no confirmation; no liquid fragile perishable," and off we went.

The guy behind me had 83 little packages of pens to send to customers. THIS, people, should be handled with stamps and dropped in a postal box (they were all well under the 13 oz. rule for the big blue postal boxes). I was so glad he was behind me, but wanna give him a postal cluesticking.

Ever feel too embarrassed and "beat down" to even whine about it? That's sort of where I am.

Leedle whine: Most Awesome Ex-Husband of the Universe (aka The Dave) gave me his nasty germies while over here for dinner the other night.

Leedle anti-whine: Moose doesn't have it, girls are (knock wood) fine too, and The Dave even offered to pay for Tamiflu if it turned out to be flu. (It's not, just an annoying virus that hopefully doesn't go into pneumonia like it always did before I moved somewhere with clean air.) Also, he took us out for pizza last night, since I'd had a horrible day.

Big Whine: Horrible Day brought to me courtesy of GUESS WHO..ShowerSac Ex. Who confronted me ON THE CURB of his residence during our child transfer about the parenting plan paperwork. That I've put off filing till January (I know, I know) because I didn't want to wreck the holidays, and he would absolutely have turned our family plans upside-down in retaliation. Not to mention, I really don't want to be in the middle of the case with James gone and surgery scheduled. He said he doesn't want to pay ANY more child support since I'm married now (never mind that we make well under $40K a year and I'm a SAHM), and when I calmly (you guys would be proud) pointed out that he was yelling at me, he stalked off with our wailing child in his arms, bellowing "I'm filling!! And this potty-training is ridiculous...she's well overdue!! I'M CALLING THE AUTHORITIES!!"

So, I've spent the whole sick morning calling agencies to get counseling (for me, for behaving like a victim, and for her, because I think the fact that she sobs when I get her near the potty at my house means he's forcing the issue at his), and I think I may have finally hit pay dirt. Wish me luck, and also that he shows up with her today at her first dental appointment/ "meet and great".

One more shallow, embarrassing whine. Moose and I have been having *so* much fun planning for a belated honeymoon this summer. We had to pay off an enormous bill that ends this month, and were seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. We've been so excited at the thought of going somewhere together- we've never been able to get away for more than 30 hours or so since we've met. Well, the upcoming court case pretty much puts the kibosh on our plans. He's being way more mature about it than I am. We both have our priorities straight- our children come FIRST, and he does consider my girls 100% his babies, too- but boy, am I ever sad about it. I strive to be an excellent parent and I hate feeling like a thwarted child. And I just want some time away from this constant stress..is that really so much to ask?

:-(

Liz Miller said...

((Debangel)) You can schedule a vacation anyway. Courts have heard of plane tickets and scheduling conflicts, they really have. And if it's about money, then schedule something cheaper/closer but still nice. A B&B nearby for a weekend? Something like that. It will do you a world of good.

Liz Miller said...

Notice how I focused on the part that can be easily fixed? Because I want to tear Shower Sacs face right off.

kathy a. said...

((( debangel ))) ok, breathe! first things first. xoxo

you and your sweetie *will* find time together, even if the big dream thing is put off. he and the dave both put the girls first -- which means you are a team! go, girls!! that is the kind of love you need.

i don't know where the fireplace jerk-ex thinks he gets off, declaring he won't pay child support -- nevermind his messing with your daughter. so, let him "file" -- he is extremely stupid if he thinks yelling and filing first puts him at an advantage. talk to your lawyer!

honest, it is worth putting other things on hold to have your family in a safer, less stressful place. no judge is going to buy the yell and stop paying child support approach favored by jerkfaces, i promise.

xoxoxo

kathy a. said...

also, what liz said. get a tentative custody + support order in place -- with some necessary parameters. you want your baby safe and calm. but also -- it is extremely usual for things to be scheduled around vacations and other plans.

debangel said...

Thanks, ladies ((germ-free hugs)). It's not the scheduling, it's the $$. And I know we'll get away somewhere, sometime..but do you ever get the feeling you're running out of gas, and just knowing where the next rest stop was would help you get there, even if you had to crawl? That's how I feel. That, and I know that @#$!@ is *so* jealous that the only thing that would make him happier than ruining our honeymoon would be if I dropped dead. As for ripping his face off, there's a rather long line for that, I'm afraid. Bring provisions ;) I thought I'd sell tickets and help fund the girls' college education ;-)

Moose will be working a 10 or so day schedule on, 4 days off, in San Antonio January and February, so we're sort of thinking that once my surgery's past (and I'm cleared for recreational use, LOL), we'll take a long weekend away.

Oh, and I need to give an award to Moose, even though he's only related to a Pixie. He was the first of us (at least 60 seconds before me) to come up with the idea of a cheaper honeymoon, so that we could save up and bring the girls to Disneyland next Christmas instead..as a surprise. (Dave is actually considering going too, so he can split the time with Seph and take her to see old friends in San Diego, where she was born.) I immediately bestowed on him the Second Best Stepfather Ever Award. ;-)

Aannd..my cat just horked on the rug. Rather considerate of him to do it during Whining Season.

kathy a. said...

deb, your cat is just expressing solidarity with the Cluestick Posse. ;)

i don't know that you need to label any one event as a "honeymoon," insofar as jerkface is concerned. (what you and moose call a particular event is a whole separate thing.) i'm petty sure we can come up with a business reason for you to go to anaheim with the kids, can't we?

chin up. carry on. call your lawyer.

ps and thanks so much, kathya, for the stitchwitch suggestion....I'm excited--you're starting a stocking trend!

kathy a. said...

bonus tip that i should have mentioned earlier: if you get the stitch-witch on your iron, go get a wet washcloth and wipe it off right now, while the iron is warm. you do not want somebody ironing a shirt for work to find out there was a small crafting accident with the iron. (not that such a thing ever happens in my personal household, very often...)

esperanza said...

debangel, to focus on myself completely, did I read that correctly that you may be in San Antonio in Jan or Feb??? Not to butt in on your honeymoon or anything, but if you're up for a pixie meetup that is totally doable from my location.

And that *(^&** needs a cluesticking in a bad way. Jerk.

debangel said...

LOL Esperanza..how about I get a big ol' cluestick and charge a buck a caning? That'll pay for my honeymoon, ASAP ;)

James will be working in San Antonio 10 or so days on, 4 days off, in January and February. (We live outside of Boulder, CO) I was actually thinking of flying there to stay with him for a couple of days in February, and if I do, we should definitely have a Pixie meetup!

Sarah said...

Hugs DebAngel. Just hugs. Lots of great Pixie advice. And you ahve some good guys in your life outweighing the bad one.

Sue said...

Oh hugs and more hugs debangel.

I am in the queue for the caning of Shower Sac.

I can only echo the good advice of other Pixies. Talk to your lawyer.

I agree with kathy - your cat is expressing solidarity in this horrible time.

Sending good energy and hoping you and esperanza can have a Texas Pixie Party!!

Liz Miller said...

27 dead. 14 children. I...I...

I just can't.

esperanza said...

Me neither, Liz.

kathy a. said...

This is so horrifying. Second one this week. And little kids, at a place where they are supposed to be safe.

No awards today. Please say what you need to, and hugs to all our kids and all the kids everywhere.

debangel said...

Yeah, imma quit my whining now, and just squeeze my kiddos extra tight :(

purple_kangaroo said...

China too. Knife attack today on 22 children and 1 adult. What a broken world we live in. :(

kathy a. said...

PK, that would be enough awful news for one day. Fortunately, all those children lived.

I know not everyone agrees with me about guns -- I hate 'em. And the reason I do is that it is so easy for someone to get shot: on purpose, by accident. But automatic weapons are in a class of their own, so able to wreak massive destruction in just a few instants. There is no legitimate civilian purpose for them.

My heart grieves for all the victims, their friends and families. And really for all of us; this is horror on such an unimaginable scale. Their pain is ours, too. xoxoox
