Wednesday Whining Volunteer Tomatoes and Squash Edition

It's amazing what grows in pots that are filled partly with compost. We planted basil and got tomatoes alongside them. Separated the tomatoes into their own pots, got volunteer squash. Now the squash is in its own pot. I wonder what will grow with it?

Meanwhile, Muffin Man is in the computer-programming and other science education day camp that he has gone to for years, and I expect to hear good things when he comes home.

Also, the weather has been phenomenally good. I mean, like May. Not too hot. Only occasionally too humid. I mean, seriously, this is August?

What's up with you?

Yay for volunteer plants! Edible ones, even! And glad MM is in an adored camp this week.

W: This particular piece of the albatross, it is a bitch. And my least favorite piece, possibly a hall of famer. Supposed to be done last week, but... Onward.

AW: Momcat had her special operation and came back for more fostering, and she was a whole new girl last night. HUGE wrestling match with a gingham toy mouse! Very funny, and she may be making friends with the resident cats.

AW: Daughter is busy with applications. Knock wood!

Speaking of volunteers -- we still have some bitty volunteer pines popping up in the front yard, from the tree we cut down a couple years ago. A couple of their older sibs are in pots; one is now bigger than the original tiny potted christmas tree. Circle of life!

Yay camp and Yay weather. We have had unseasonably mild mornings, with not so stinking much humidity. Such a relief.

W: holy cow I am tired. Prepping for vacation.

AW: vacation. Where the cell phones don't work.

Question: Mini is having frequent, panicked, shrieking urges to go potty (#1). When she tries, only a few drops or none at all. Hoping to avoid peeing in the cup, but does this sound like a UTI? Been going on for...several weeks. No fever. She says it doesn't hurt when she goes. It seems to be worse when she is asked to do something she doesn't want to, but it does happen other times too. She is taking an oral antibiotic for the impetigo. Dr. Whiners, what say you?

kathy a. said...

possible uti. cranberry juice is supposed to help (or that might be a myth); at the least, try pumping the fluids and see what happens. don't want it to go all bad on vacation in the land of no cell reception.

kathy a. said...

although -- uti would be weird since she is on antibiotics. maybe dehydration? is her urine concentrated or dark? i'd still go with pushing fluids -- even if it means resorting to bribery, slurpies, or whatevers.

Not dark. She's a pretty good drinker.

W: Holy unbloggable fireplacing wow at Mr E's meeting tonight. People are a mystery. Now he has dumped the semi load of stress and we are both wide awake.

W: not good when we don't feel completely safe in our own home tonight. It will be good to leave town tomorrow, for lots of reasons.

Thanks, Liz. There's nothing to make us *think* we're unsafe, just a feeling. Unpredictable person involved.

I turned into Ms. Crankypants yesterday, with a flood of responses to a query on a new email list. So I did a reply-all along the lines of PLEASE DO NOT REPLY ALL TO EVERYTHING. That got held in moderation. The unlucky person who wrote one of the answers felt bad for being picked on publicly -- so I apologized profusely for my graceless behavior. (Even though it never went public.) Maybe this is a list I don't need to be on...

In other crankypants news, I got a package at my mailbox place. The clerk didn't want to bother walking over to look at the tag [the others always take the tag] and kept asking "where is it" -- like I'd know? Then she poked around in a leisurely manner, said she couldn't find it, and said I'd have to go back in 6 hours when her supervisor is there. Is it that hard to acknowledge the inconvenience to a paying customer whose mail gets lost IN their store?

Ahem. AW: My husband, who never does sentimental things from his work email, just sent a video of tiger cubs.

I have a large mosquito bite on the back side of my knee, right in the crease.

Bactine. Ice.

Blergh, I hate when mosquitoes get you in those spots. I had a couple of bites, right at the spot where my shoe rubs my foot, and that was unpleasant.

(((esperanza))) I really hope your vacation goes well, because I really don't like the sounds of you not feeling safe in your own home.

Petty Canadian whine: I've been researching a lightweight (and low-ish cost) replacement for the two massive strollers we have. (Why do we have TWO massive strollers? Because both sets of parents got excited about a good deal at a garage sale, and then it became this THING, and we are wimps and kept both monsters.) So, I'm soon going to sell our baby car seat, and at least one of the giant strollers, and will buy a little one, that's basically a glorified umbrella stroller. So: I've been researching what would be the best one to get, and none of the top-rated ones of this style are sold in Canada, or they cost $100 more than they cost in the US. (And buying one online from an American store involves $80 of shipping and import fees!) This always happens, when I research something to buy, but it's the worst with the baby stuff.

AW: I tracked down a stroller that I can order from Big Evil Box Store, since their warehouse has a couple left of the one I want. But only a couple because (W) yet another company has decided to discontinue their product in Canada. (Oh! But they'll continue to sell ones that have lower ratings, or that cost $500.)

kathy a. said...

QWP, I'd drop hints to the grandparents that you're in the market for an umbrella stroller, now that E is more mobile. Tell them all about the problems of finding/choosing one! You'll get 2, but at least they don't take so much space. ;)

Or, are there any kid exchange / consignment stores in your area? Kids so quickly grow into other needs. Or, something like craigslist, where people re-sell?

The other day, my beloved mentioned something he saw had happened in my line of work, and I identified the fortunate fellow who made it happen as the person who bought our playpen and high chair at a yard sale a million years ago. LOL!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Ha!

I think, in this one case, we're just going to buy new, with the proceeds of the sale of the bucket carseat. It's very new, and we'll be able to get more for it than the stroller will cost. (We're needing enough favours from the grandparents right now, that I'm going to take care of this one myself. And I'm making Mr. Q be the one to tell his mother that we're for sure selling the stroller she gave us: it's been very useful, but it's time. The thing weighs more than my child does.)

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Updated whine: I missed my chance, and that stroller is out of stock online! It means I'm back to square one, combing through the used ads, comparing those to the lists of recalls.

Unbloggable details. But the person who has helped and guided me with this giant complicated thing x 16 months is being laid off "for budgetary reasons," and someone else is being assigned. At an extremely critical time, with deadline pressure.

"Penny wise and pound foolish" is what comes to mind. Anxiety was already through the roof on this one. And now, a new person is supposed to just step in and understand the million unusual problems here? On deadline?

W: the fireplacing cell phone works here.
W: unpredictable former employee is stirring up discontent, in an extremely unprofessional manner.

AW: we are still managing (sort of) to enjoy the vacation. Swimming at pool, swimming in river, playing on giant playground.

AW: Both Baboos *love* their new lifejackets. This is a win.

W: being with my brother and his family is always, always so exhausting. They bring out the worst in Sweet, I think because she is trying to keep up with High Energy Cousin and overtires herself. They are all unaccustomed to making accommodations for someone who needs extra time/rest/space/etc. It's wearing.

AW: they leave tomorrow and we're staying for one more day.

AW: Out of town family arrived yesterday. It's going to be a very full week!

W: Lunch today with my dad and step mother. Turns out they are going to spend a few weeks "apart" (her words) and he's not taking it well. The question of course is whether he will be traveling back to their shared home in another city when the summer ends.

I'll check back later pixies. Hugs to you all!!

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, hope the rest of the vacation continues to be fun, but is more restful!

Oh, Sue. Wow. I'm sorry for your dad. What a lunch that must have been.

Is this perhaps a chance for the siblings to get a better handle on his functioning?

Liz said...

Oy gevalt, Sue! Your life is following plot lines from Call the Midwife.

Not really, but I just watched the episode last night where Camilla's mater left Camilla's pater.

kathy a. said...

And just last week, here at kvetch central, KLee's mom left stepdad! For a while anyway.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Oh goodness! Things have been dramatic this week. I hope things go well for your dad Sue, and especially hope that this is an opportunity to get his health situation figured out.

Esperanza, I agree in hoping that the good outweighs the bad this week, and I really hope that the day without your brother's family is particularly restful.

(((ANM)))

AW/W: we leave for our vacation in two days. I'm so stressed out about the travelling, and the upset to E's routine, since she doesn't love change. And I'm starting to stress to people out there that we will only be available in the mornings or late afternoons (or evenings, where we're staying, if they don't mind not seeing E). A lot of people don't understand that her schedule is inflexible, especially since we'll already be dealing with the time difference.

AW: the limitations that E imposes on our trip means that we can't possibly overbook ourselves, and that I will have to have breaks as well. It's easy to do that on this sort of trip (to be fair to everyone, this IS our first trip back since E was born, to a place where we lived for seven years).

esperanza said...

Pixies, it's getting awful-er and awful-er. Really awful.

AW: many, many people sending Mr E messages of love and support.

AW: we did manage to enjoy chunks of our day today.

W: heading back home tomorrow.

kathy a. said...

omg, Esperanza. It sounds like the crazed person has gone viral. Sending love.

Well, the lunch went as well as expected. In other words, pretty awful.

The situation is not good, but my dad seemed a bit "sharper" today than last week. A bit less grumpy, but so clearly unhappy. I'm so glad all the sisters are together to work on this.

AW: My sis who had surgery last week is doing really well. Good range of motion in the shoulder, very little pain. Yay!

Liz said...

Yay for your sister's recovery!

So sorry about your dad.

Family member had a scary shouty shaking kicking meltdown. In the car. While driving. Actually at the wheel.

I am proud of myself for telling them to pull over that instant. I am proud of them for obeying.

Has since apologized. We are being gentle with each other.

But I am still shaken.

-Anon for this.

kathy a. said...

Pasta with pesto. Some chicken and peppers also.

A few albatross-related things went OK today!

Momcat is back for the adoption weekend. She is really a nice girl, has flirted all week with Spot, and she loves a good game of chase-the-stick. Kittens are totally ze cute, but -- I could see breaking the no-long-haired pets rule for her, if she doesn't find another forever home.

kathy a. said...

But we're just foster parents! Can't get new batches of kittens if we snatch up our fosters.
