Lady Sings the Whines

I'm mixing my classic singers today, because my carPod plays everything in alphabetical order, so this morning I heard both The Lady is a Tramp (Ella) and Lady Sings the Blues (Billie).

I think I run about 60% on the tramp-o-meter.

Too hungry for dinner at 8? yes
Like the theatre but never come late? not recently, but generally yes
Won't waste time with people I hate? yes
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the pixies? sorry, Ella, I leave you there.

and so on.

Join me in song or in whine, whatever moves you this week. Personally I like the ones where the trumpets blare.

Down, dooby-do, down down,
Comma, comma,
Down, dooby-do, down down,
Whining style is hard to-oo-ooo do!

I've got some work, I don't want to do,
A stupid relative -- no, make that two.
Son will be working on a bike of blue,
So let me whine along with you.

They say that whining style is hard to do,
But you know, you know that's not true!
Come share your whines with us,
Instead of feeling bad, join us on the cluestick bus!

Down, dooby-do, down down,
Comma, comma,
Down, dooby-do, down down,
Whining style's not hard to-oo-ooo do!

I made brioche
Eggy buttery brioche
I made brioche
To last me all this week
I had some for tea
And a BLT
And a slice with jam today at six
(for kicks)
Now there's just a half a loaf left
When it's all gone I'll be bereft
Don't ask me to share, I'll play deaf
So I can have brioche all the week.

Twinkle twinkle, little hope
I'm not begging - no way, nope.
Email ignored times by three
I'm so done I feel quite free
twinkle twinkle, little hope
no kingston visit this year - nope.

Bad style, I know. I'm not good at this.
Whine: I'm am so DONE with planning this trip to Kingston. I am so skeptical anyway because last year the treatment did not work. Now my emails and calls have gone unanswered by my step-sister in Kingston (who works with the doc) for almost two weeks.

Whine: Hubby not happy. Wants me to go anyway - just show up and play dumb "Oh, I thought we were all set up" (admittedly, this would probably work because the doc is much nicer than my step-sister and he would certainly take time for me having come all that way)

Whine/Anti-whine: colonscopy booked for Aug 10th. WooHoo - I really know how to rock the vacation time don't I???

Anti-whine: family doc visit today went really well. He was really supportive and said he hoped that if I choose to go to Kingston, that I get better results. Then he signed all the necessary paper work while he talked about his own initiation into the 'club' (the colonscopy club).

Anti-whine: I left without an appointment card to follow up on anything. That feels good after five years. My head still hurts, but at least doc and I are on the same page. We may have reached the end of the road in terms of what to do about it. For some reason, as long as that feels supported and not punitive, I can live with it.

Whine: Pass the ice. Lots of it. Looks like I'm in for the long haul.

Sue, you are in bad shape when "colonoscopy" appears in not one, but TWO, antiwhines. Just saying.

Sorry about the squashing of the hope.

Stuff, stuff on my floor
Feels like I can't walk anymore
Boxes stacked all around
Starting to think we don't have any ground

But if I'm done moving in just a few days/
it'll be worth all of the dust and the haze/
So I'll clean so much that my hands go numb, yes I'll clean, clean the flat!

Liz Miller said...

The colonoscopy itself is easy, you sleep through it and afterwards, you have the best nap of your life.
It's the day before that is a bit tedious. I recommend the orange gatorade, cherry jello, and chicken broth.

Sue said...

Liz - that's what the doc was saying, that the prep is not pleasant, but the procedure is no big deal. He did say that it took them 5 hours to bring him around after the sedation. He decided that the anesthetist just underestimated his size (my doc is quite a small man) and over-zonked him.

And yes, cherry is still the best jello flavour - bar none.

Sue said...

Also, you make a good point about colonoscopy being a two-time anti-whine. Tells ya something about how much fun *my* life is, doesn't it? ~sigh~

The funny part is that when I got my appointment time, I was excited on the one hand (less than two weeks after the request) - Canadian medicine and their long wait lists - ya right! On the other hand, I noticed it was during my vacay and was disappointed that I don't even get a few sick days off for it.

Whatever.... :)

Also, for the day before, I recommend nice cozy books like Georgette Heyer. Especially since the foods she writes about don't seem to appetizing to the modern palatte. Keep away from books with descriptions of yummy foods.

The Long Winter is not bad for the day before, since you feel fortunate compared to Laura.

Gah! Typo!

I got some bad news yesterday -- my aunt who had brain cancer last October seemed to be doing very well, even attending my brother's wedding this past May, but got back the results of an MRI this week.

Apparently, the tumor is back. And it's aggressive. The word that I'm getting, completely second-hand, is that the MRI looked like she'd never even had the first tumor removed. So, in just a month or so, the tumor has not only returned, but has grown so large so quickly.

They give her 3 months if she seeks no further treatment, and a year if she has the same surgery again. I'm so angry that she has to go through all of this, not once, but twice.

I am leaving to head out of state to visit her in the morning. It may be for the last time while she's living. I hate even thinking that, much less typing it.

kathy a. said...

(((( KLee ))))) I'm so sorry. Fireplacing cancer. Holding you and your family in my thoughts. xoxoxo

esperanza said...

Oh, KLee, safe travels. Peace to you.

Whines...let's see. Last Sunday I was substitute preaching at a place I had been to the Sunday before, yet I still managed to make a wrong turn (rather, fail to make the correct turn). Was thisclose to being late. Then Mini Baboo rioted against the babysitter, who had to give up and bring her to me. So I held a alternately screaming and smiling Mini while doing the end of the service. Everyone but me thought it was fine. I hate feeling unprofessional, and to do so twice in the space of one morning...sigh. I would rather be remembered as the one with the kick-*ss sermon rather than the one with the adorable baby. Then I think--you're *competing* with your own child? get a grip. Like I said, sigh.

Hubby is super busy this week--a pox on Vacation Bible School--and I am preaching again this coming Sunday. These two (him virtually out of town and me preaching) have not been in alignment since the arrival of Mini Baboo, and I'm feeling like there is too much work and too little esperanza to make it happen. Sigh.

Man, but I'm whiny this week. And completely unstylish to boot.

AW: Sweet Baboo is rocking the potty!!!! Several days of no wet underwear. Still working on the pook, but she is making great progress.

Oh, margalit, I know that song! Diflucan. One pill. Done. It's over the counter now in Ontario, don't know about anywhere else. (And yes, I didn't find out it was over the counter until after a night of discomfort and paying for parking near the walk-in clinic.)

Madeleine said...

The other fridge-based remedy I used to try was garlic. Peel, prick to release juices, wrap in a layer of gauze and insert.

Between that and the yogurt, I used to call it the greek salad treatment. I never tried cucumber, but who knows! Maybe that would be soothing. Or tomatoes for the acid.

Sue said...

Wait - you mean like insert insert - the garlic???? Um, ew. Try getting some action after that one....just sayin'... :)

((((KLee)))) I'm so sorry.

Yay Sweet Baboo for rockin' the potty! esperanza, I SO understand the almost-getting-lost thing. I have zero sense of direction. I've lived in the same city my entire life and I still get disoriented on occasion. I would have made a lousy Girl Scout. Well, and I would have eaten all the cookies...

Margalit - I hear ya - and the Diflucan is pretty amazing. If you can get some, it works wonders.

Whine: Teh Bloat. Not sure why. It's been fairly warm here, maybe that's it. A question dear pixies: Will drinking lots of water make Teh Bloat bloatier, or better?

Yes - I just created a new word.

You're welcome. Anytime...

Unknown said...

Sue, if you have edema, meaning if the bloat is in your ankles, legs, and mid-section, you DO NOT want to drink more water. It will just sit there until your heart gets overloaded. What you DO want to do is diuretics. Stuff like Pamprin and Mydol have small amounts of diuretics, but might help IF you don't take them regularly. Coffee helps some folks, as does parsley. For the bloated 24/7 crowd, lasix is the drug of choice. Ask some of your elderly friends. They're all on it. Overloading with liquids can be really dangerous, especially if you have other wonky heart/lungs issues. For me, it's a death sentence.

Klee, sending you a nice big comfy hug.

Oh, and diflucan was one of the many initial meds I tried. Did absolutely nothing. Doctor has postulated that my immune system is so shot from the pneumonia and now whooping cough that I'm just going to have to live with it. Doctor is MALE. GRRRR.

The Stinky is 'cause my deodorant failed on me today.

It's bad enough that MM cut our cuddle-time short.

Cranky, Bitchy, and Wrathful are for my boss, who is a grade-A douchebag - a useless tool of the patriarchy.

Short is my everyday condition, but today I wish I weren't. I would love to tower over my boss.

Minor Whine: Last week, I found a peach orchard between our small town and the Big City. Peaches...mmmm. Sounds good. So I plan to stop by there on my way back home from Big City this week, thereby saving gas and the planet and my children's patience (not to mention my own). I check the website to remember exactly where in the middle of nowhere they are located and...."2010 Peach Season is over." Wah. Stupid efficient plan.

Sue said...

Margalit, I think this is more of an "end of a hot day and my hands and feet feel poofy" kind of bloat. It's gone this morning, so I guess doing nothing worked.

Liz - "useless tool of the patriarchy" - we hates them.

Whine: Seriously pixies - is it actually only Wednesday today? I woke up thinking it must be at least Friday, if not Saturday. How can it only be Wednesday when I'm Friday-tired? Confusion reigns supreme here this morning in "supposed to be writing a brilliant sermon land".

I. Got. Nuthin.

AW/W: having lunch with my dad's cousin today. she usually takes her husband to an adult day care, so she can have a few hours a week to herself, and they are closing for the ENTIRE MONTH of august due to budget problems.

W/AW: my friend with cancer will need chemo. thanks to the miracle of the internet, a bunch of us are conspiring to make a quilt!

Pure AW: one of the preemie twins got to go home this week! my friends have been preparing the cats by draping their favorite perches with blankies from NICU.

W/AW: my sister's been dealing with some Big Stuff. made her a voodoo doll, festooned with some very creative afflictions suggested by friends.

oh, esperanza -- i'm always getting lost. have been known to get lost within 3 miles of the house i grew up in, trying to find the commercial urban airport, which is not exactly in a secret location. i'm betting that the congregation thought you gave a kickass sermon AND have the cutest mini on the planet.

liz and her dwarves are prize-worthy. maybe she can bump it up to 7 after seeing the boss today!

completely random and unrelated whines:

W: I lost an earring today while shopping--nothing fancy, just one that I really liked.

W: I seem to have forgotten to explain to my daughters that "disposable" <> "single use" where razors are concerned. AW: I had a coupon and found a sale on a multi-pack so the $$ damage was not quite so extensive. (Also--channeling my inner curmudgeon: what's up with these four bladed razors? When I was their age, we had two blades and we were *happy*:-))

W: My two teens are away this week and I (and DH and youngest child) miss them. AW: the house is quieter and my driving around town is much less.

W: With the kids away, my carefully developed and optimized laundry and meal preparation plans are shot!

(((KLee)))

Hooray for Sweet Baboo and potty success!

Hugs for Klee.

Eventual natural resistance for Margalit?

Emily - my mom told me to start drying and rinsing with rubbing alcohol and storing outside of the shower my disposable blades. She has one she's used for 3 years and it is still sharp. I have to admit, it works, but you can't leave them in the shower or they get dull much more quickly. Hope the kids and their joyful noise are home soon.

Days - happy kids coming home from camp. Good luck with the keeping busy.

Esperanza - I hate getting lost. And I'm sure the congregation thought kind things. And double yay on the potty training!

Additional whiny whine: Sweet Baboo is snotty, very snotty. My usual measures don't seem to be helping at all.

AW: She was in better spirits today, snot and all, than in several days. Only a couple of tantrums, over easily-identifiable things.

W: Mini has been up at midnight the past two nights. This is not helping the sermon-writing department of the brain. At all.

AW: She is so fireplacing cute, even at midnight.

Madeleine said...

AW: Just deleted some funny conspiracy theory spam. Not sure why that makes me happy, but it does.

Sue: Yes, insert. Really. When I have a yeast infection, action is off the menu, so a little garlic doesn't matter.

Margalit, sorry to hear NOTHING is working. Grrr on doctors who have never experienced the subtle joys of yeast.

Days, sending pixie hugs.

Espernza, condolences on missing Peach Season. You should move up here where Peach Season will be starting soon. MMMMMM fresh peaches by the basket.

Foggy hilly small pretty
And also rainy

Yes, it was lovely weather on the work/travel days and miserable on the sight-seeing day. Fun anyway.

Madeleine: you make a good point re: the garlic.

also: TOO TRUE about Halifax. *snerk*

Whine: August 1st approaching

at

molasses-like

speed.

Want

vacation

now.

Whine: Our denominational magazine arrived yesterday. I should never read it because the people who write the letters to the editor are idiots. One woman doesn't think ministers should ever get sabbaticals because "we already pay them so much money".

Oh really? How many other PROFESSIONAL individuals (ie have had at least 7 years of university study and hold two university degrees) are paid a maximum salary that is frighteningly close to the official Canadian poverty line? Doctors? Lawyers? Dentists?

Didn't think so.

Bitch.

I don't think today is a good day for me to write a response to the magazine. Just sayin'....

Madeleine said...

Sue, ha! My hubby makes similar noises when people complain that professors only teach a few hours a week and they get the summer off! As if.

Sue said...

Exactly Madeleine - I hear the same griping about teachers here too. If *anyone* deserves summer holidays, it's anyone who teaches.

Whine: stoopid people who don't get it.

Sue said...

EEEEEeeeeeeee!!!!!! This one falls into the category of Super Duper Over the Top Can't Believe It Anti-whine:

A pastor friend wrote me to ask about a possible meet up on the 26-27 of July (she is visiting family about 3 hours South of us in Duluth - thought perhaps we could meet somewhere in between here and there for lunch).

Well, I checked out pain clinics in Duluth, made a few inquiries, a quick call to my Now Fabulous Doc (formerly known as What Headache Doc) who happily provided a referral - I'M GOING TO DULUTH FOR THE SAME TREATMENT I'VE HAD FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS.

Yup.
It's a Minnesota miracle.

So - step-sister can bite me 'cause I don't need her, or her complicated family baggage or the doc she works for. I only have to travel three little hours South to receive exactly the same treatment. YeeHaw!

Whine: too bad I didn't know about this sooner.

Anti-whine: at least I know now. And really, without those first two visits to Kingston, I wouldn't have known about the treatment at all.

It's all good.

Sarah at ratatat said...

Yay Sue! And Duluth is pretty too :)
