Distracted edition

I may not be around so much this week, as there is a thing that needs doing for work.

Events of national importance are horrifying me presently, especially this morning's unthinkable twit explosion.

On a brighter note, our son's birthday is tomorrow, and the first anniversary is fast approaching -- so, we'll be seeing the kids sometime soon!

Had a good weekend, especially visiting with my artistic college friend.  The weather is basically perfect just now, too!

Tonight will be chicken tikka masala, and am totally cheating by using a prepared simmer sauce.

What's happening at your house?

Tonight was breakfast for supper at our place.

This week begins a marathon of Baboo and Mama travel adventures. Daisy the puppy will spend Friday night in the kennel (ahem. "Doggie hotel with doggie friends"). Sweet was just about in tears over it already.

W: Mr E is going through an awful patch at his church, which is confirming his desire to leave (which would not happen until this time next year). Sweet picked up on his mood and asked him what was wrong. He needs to keep his fireplacing mouth shut while she is around, because I cannot handle an entire year of her fretting about moving.

I suppose there is an AW in all of the above: Sweet is obviously becoming quite empathetic, for better or worse.

The Doggy Hotel! With Puppy Friends!!! Please advise Sweet that our Clyde *adores* going to day care and seeing his buds, and that will be his doggy hotel when we next leave town. It will be so exciting! Clyde is also very happy to come home again. Win, win!

xoxo

Also, ick about Mr. E's bad time, and seconding the motion to just not talk about it during kid time.

Doggy Hotel with Doggy Friends! I love it. And hugs about the stress with Mr. E's work.

W: somehow, I thought that a day that started with frequent early-morning wakeups would be a great time to try to cut back on caffeine. With a wonky air pressure system (we had a lot of thunderstorms today), adding extra tension to my head!

W/AW: the other preschool parent helper (they only get helpers on special occasions, and only two of us have managed to get our criminal record checks done/have the flexibility to help) suddenly isn't available for tomorrow's water fun party, and so I'm going to spend the afternoon wrangling wet preschoolers. (I helped at it last year, and it was so fun.) But I was looking forward to that afternoon to myself. And E has a bad track record for acting up when Mama is there. We're practising ahead of time, so that she pretends that I'm just a random parent, and tries to ignore that I'm there, so that she has more fun.

I won't try to limit my caffeine tomorrow: I need the mental energy to wrangle fourteen wet preschoolers. (Note to self: take a change of clothes, because even though the teacher says "don't worry about wearing a bathing suit, because you'll just be directing traffic!" the urge is strong to spray the adults with the water pistols.)

Doggy Hotel sounds like a fun place!! My sister's pup LOVES the doggy hotel because it's just so! much! fun!

Sorry to hear Mr E is struggling at work, but yes, he shouldn't share troubles when Baboos are present.

I hope the work thing this week goes well, kathy!

QWP - Good luck with the wrangling of wet preschoolers!

AW: Our son from the Big City is visiting over the weekend. We're looking forward to seeing him, though he's here to be part of the opening of pride week and will be super busy.

W: Hubby is feeling like a wet rag. All symptoms appear to be ms related (fatigue, nerve pain, trigeminal neuralgia) so there's not much to do except rest and treat symptoms.

AW: Does not appear to be an infection of any kind, so that's good.

kathy a. said...

QWP, have fun with the kidlets!

Sue -- yay about the visit from your son, and Pride Week! I'm so sorry your sweetie is feeling ick (and glad it's not infection). xoxo

I think I forgot to mention that my next door neighbor (other side, not the Elderly Neighbors) had a breakdown last week, and she went in the ambulance for an evaluation and treatment. Evidently, she had gone off her meds and wasn't eating -- not good signs. She's still away, and I really hope they can help her get back on a steady keel. This has been a long struggle for her...

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'm sorry to hear that your other neighbour is not doing well, Kathy. You're such a good friend to your neighbours.

I'm sorry that your husband is having a hard week, Sue (but am glad that it doesn't seem to be an infection).

W: the weather is non-ideal for outdoor water fun (although, since it's not actually raining, we're going ahead with plans). It's a bit chilly and windy today.

AW: at least E is in the afternoon group! I would not want to be outside in a bathing suit this morning. (Most of the American pixies would be shocked to see the temperatures today, considering that our plans involve bathing suits.)

kathy a. said...

This neighbor and I are not close; but we've been neighbors forever and I still worry about her. There were a couple of bad incidents when she was off her meds -- like the time she objected to my son's teen band practicing one warm afternoon, and so she sprayed her hose over the fence and into our family room, where they boys were using electric instruments. Freaked them right out, and I marched over to remind her about using our words; and if she didn't want to see me, we do have telephones. That was probably 16 years ago, and we have had reasonably friendly relations, consisting mainly of saying hi as we pass.

My son's 31st birthday is today!

Boo to feeling like a wet rag. I hope some rest and symptom management can bring some improvement, Sue.

QWP, I hope you survived the "fun."

Mr E took off "like a herd of turtles," as my Dad would say, for his meeting today. Good grief, the man can prolong a departure.

Sweet amazes me. The past couple of days, she has been stuck on, "I miss {our old town, my old friend there, x thing we used to do there}" I couldn't figure it out. Then it hit me. We moved to this house on June 2 two years ago. Even though she isn't even out of school yet, she somehow knows.

W: Mini came home from school and fell asleep on the floor (it's wood over concrete! not even carpet!) for two hours. I'm currently taking bets on when she'll fall asleep tonight.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Asleep on a wood floor for two hours! That is one tired kid. (I'm reminded of my best nap of my life, at the age of 14, on a giant boulder, as we were taking a break during a 14-day canoe trip. The whole group of kids/teenagers fell asleep, and when we woke up, the adults said, "When you are grown ups, you will be confused by how you once were able to sleep on a rock." I think of how comfortable I was on that rock, as I toss and turn in my queen-sized bed, and wake up with a sore neck.)

Queen of West Procrastination said...

AW: the sun came up, and the weather warmed up, just in time for the water fun. The weather report says that it only went up to 20C today, but in the sheltered, sunny spot, it felt hotter, but was so mild that none of the kids had sunburns, and they were able to play in the water for two solid hours.

In a related anti-whine, E didn't cling or fuss at all at bedtime, and fell asleep immediately. (Probably also because she woke up at 5:30 this morning.)

esperanza said...

20C??? All wet?? Oh no. Nuh-uh. No way. I'm glad they had fun, and I'm glad it was at least sunny.

9:45 pm. Mini still awake. Since Mr. E is out of town, she wants to sleep with me, of course.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I was surprised it was only 20C! I was in a t-shirt and shorts, and I ended up putting on a hat, because I felt like my face was getting too much sun. (It was significantly cooler in the morning, and apparently the morning class still went outside for their water party! But only lasted for about fifteen minutes. Which was fine, since it was the younger group.)

Sending "GOOOO TOOOOO SLEEEEEP" pixie dust in Mini's direction.

Sue said...

I'm glad your neighbour is being cared for, kathy. Yikes about the long-ago incident!

20C isn't bad for an outdoor event if the sun is shining. Heck, that's almost room temperature! ;)

We awoke to 6C this morning. It is impossible to know how to dress during this season. It will be warm this afternoon, but this morning, not so much...

I hope Mini managed some nighttime sleep, esperanza.

I could probably fall asleep on a concrete and wood floor about now. Hubby is a tiny bit better this morning, still no infection, but he had a restless night.

AW: My afternoon appointment called a while ago to cancel our meeting this afternoon! *crowd cheers* I may end up working at home this afternoon. And by working, I mean napping.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Oh boy, I hope you're getting a nap this afternoon, Sue!

I'm proud of myself: I sat down at booked four medical appointments for the next few weeks (two for E and two for me). I've been putting this off, and I don't know why I thought this would be difficult: both E's pediatrician and allergist share an office, and so I booked both of those appointments in one call!

esperanza said...

W: I thought Mini was asleep at around 10 last night. I waited (ie, did all those things that women do after they say "I'm going to bed.") until about 10:30. As I gently slipped the book from her hand, her eyes popped open. She then was awake until about 11:00. Yawn.

W: Sue, sorry you are also tired.

kathy a. said...

Dear Canada -- We are sorry for what's happened, and things that could happen. Love, us. xoxox

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Mini! How on earth could one nap break bedtime that drastically?

Nervously keeping my eye on another province's election tomorrow, and fretting as I read the news. (Honestly, that stresses me out more than anything the US is threatening to do to us.)

esperanza said...

QWP, she stays awake ridiculously late anyway. So that bedtime is really only two hours later than "normal" for her. There was no net gain of sleep for her, and definitely not for me!

esperanza said...

Does anyone have any experience with carpal tunnel troubles?

kathy a. said...

Nor personally, Esperanza. But go see your doc. I think whatever it is, it's better caught early.

esperanza said...

Yeah, yeah. I know. No time at the moment for doctor visits! I think I'm going to request PT. It actually started in my neck, then shoulder, now elbow and wrist hurt and today tingly thumb on that side. That progression has been over the course of several months. My mom has had surgery on both hands, with only half-satisfactory results. THe pain left, but she has never regained the strength she lost along the way. I'll eventually ask her about it, but I don't need her to start fretting yet.

kathy a. said...

No, fretting the Mom people prematurely won't do! That progression does not sound like classic carpel tunnel, anyway; and you need a doc to take a look. xoxoxo

esperanza said...

Yes, that's my thoughts re: progression of the ouchies as well. Next week is camp, the next week is a visit to the Mom people, the week after that already has dr appointments, so I'll add in one for me, too.

Sue said...

I got a second wind yesterday and actually accomplished a few things. I slept well last night, so that's good. Hubby and I both feel more human today.

esperanza, our youngest was like Mini and simply did not need as much sleep as everyone else in our home. He functioned well on 5-6 hours (still does, actually). When he got to his teen years, that did not change, but he would take a weekend every now and again and sort of hibernate. He would sleep for 12-14 hours and then nap later in the day. He seems able to literally bank his sleep.

The rule in our house was that he had to be ready for bed at his designated time, get in bed, and stay there. He could read as long as he wanted, provided he didn't disturb his brother. He knew that if his grades suffered at school (they never did) the bed time reading would be limited.

kathy, no apology needed. That dumpster fire in the oval isn't your fault. Besides, my province could very well elect an equally horrifying Premier today. *sigh* I will never understand why a person would look at someone who is ethically and morally bankrupt and think "Yes! That's who I want in government!" I just don't get it.

I've not had carpal tunnel, so I'm not much help to you, esperanza, but a doc visit does seem prudent.

kathy a. said...

My younger also did not need as much sleep as her older brother -- and, that led to some conflict around bedtime, plus a rule like Sue's about how quiet time in her bed after bedtime was fine, so long as it wasn't disturbing anybody. (For her, reading plus quiet playing with toys.)

Sue, yay for second wind! And that hubby is feeling better!

W: Neverending dumpster fire.

W/AW: Slowly making progress on this brief from fireplacing heck.

AW: Doggie day care today, so this boy can burn off some energy! He usually bounds in and greets the humans behind the desk, but today was So! Exited!! that he went directly to the first gate -- which made the wonderful staff laugh, because Clyde brings the joy. And, he'll be happy and tired when I pick him up late afternoon.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I just heard the projected election news, and I'm so sorry, Sue. And I can commiserate, since you might remember that my own province has an embarrassing and damaging government. Ugh.

kathy a. said...

Hugs to Sue. We are sorry for toxic spillover from south of the border, but urge all to persevere. xoxo

W: why does everything go wrong when Mr. Q goes it out town? The garage door came off its track in one corner, worse than it's done before, and it's twisting the panel so that it's affecting the other side of the garage too. At least the car is out of the garage, and so I'm not stranded at home until my FIL can come and help me fix it. And I think that the batteries are dying on our keypad door lock, and I don't know how to change them, or even what battery it takes! (I guess researching that will be my project during preschool.) And wasps are building a nest outside the front door, and so I'll have to spray it tonight!

I'm now realising how many jobs I don't usually do myself.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

And the power is off at his school! What a weird day.

AW: my FIL has the afternoon off, and is coming to help fix the garage door this afternoon.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Update: I have a functional garage door!

Now, let's see if I can figure out the keypad battery by myself.

My daughter is taking evidence this summer (in a condensed course), and she is so interested! This is really fun, the phone calls about what they're covering, and making sense of this and that.

Oh, the stupid news. And so much of it.

kathy a. said...

Can't believe it -- it's been a year since the big rehearsal dinner picnic for my son and DIL! That was so darned much fun!

esperanza said...

Baboos accompanied me to a two-day chunky meeting. We arrived late (on purpose), but they made it all the way today (thanks, ip@ds).

AW: probably their best night of hotel sleep ever
W: even so, I woke up repeatedly and am now tired
AW: we bought peaches straight from the orchard on the way home

kathy a. said...

Victory, Esperanza! Glad they slept well, and did well today. I usually have trouble sleeping well in hotels, personally. Yay, peaches!

My beloved is so excited to have weekends off again. So far today, he mowed the small side yard; weed-whacked this big sector of public open space behind our house (to create a defensible fire zone), applied screws to hold down this material over the Elderly Neighbor back patio (which had gotten loose and was flapping in the wind), planted veggie starters (late), and now he's building a tiny fence so our dog won't dig around his baby plants. Plus he plans a big dog walk, and cooking dinner. It makes me tired just to list all these activities. Sigh.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Esperanza, I'm amazed that the kids slept well in the hotel! Sharing a hotel room with a child is a nightmare to me.

Your husband sounds like my husband, Kathy. He loves weekend projects so much.

AW: my in-laws took E to the Big Far-Away Special Playground this afternoon (they suggested kayaking to her, and she counter-offered playground, so that they could really play together). During that time, my sister and I went to the out-of-town garden centre and bought bedding plants, went and bought snack food at a gas station like a couple of teenagers (and took my dad's car to a car wash, since we borrowed it for the trip to the garden centre, and drove it on dirt roads), and then went a bought multiple rotisserie chickens for supper, since they were such a good price, and I now won't have to cook for the rest of the weekend. And then E went to bed really easily!

You guys, have I mentioned how E is so tired all the time lately? I noticed how she's also eating everything in sight, and measured her for the second time in a week. She's grown a noticeable amount in the past four days, and almost half an inch since May 22. She's pretty excited! (She's always been on the teeny side.)
