What the what, weather?

We're in a cooling trend, with frost maybe tonight.  But this morning was sunny!

Then, bam.  It sprinkled a little, which is kind of exciting since we have not had enough moisture.  But then BAM, it hailed!  At my house!  Even though it's 50F outside!  That freaked the heck out of all the pets, because we don't have an attic, do have skylights, and so one can hear it all.

Here's what was left on the chaise.  Most of it just melted when it hit the ground.  The dog may never agree to go out again, at least until dinner time.

NL, sending love for tomorrow.  Glad the visitors were good.

What's new at everybody's place?

NL, thinking of NG tomorrow, and her parents.

AW: In medical news from here, Mini's MRI was normal. So we just go back in six months for a follow up xray.

W: the doctor's office called me to share that news while I was at the grocery store, of course.

kathy a. said...

Yay for Mini!

In the "can't make this up" department, my husband came home from work, and asked me to call the dog inside, because he wanted to put the leash on so they can go for a walk. (I'm the dog whisperer!) But Clyde had other plans and is currently running his human around the yard, because Mr. Dog Man wanted to do it his way, not give it a minute or something. Eh, whatever.

Now I'm informed that running like crazy ducks around the yard, up and down the hillside, one side to another, will be their exercise, instead of going for a walk. Mr. Mature even stomped in a puddle from the moisture collected while he was gone.

Y'all, the best thing for (U.S.) voting: vote411.org

My state has super early primaries (early voting begins tomorrow), and I could go through and read about each candidate, mark my ballot, and then at the end, email it to myself to print out and take with me. It's from the League of Women Voters. So I'm all prepared for 30 (!!) races.

kathy a. said...

Go, Esperanza! Great suggestion.

Hugs to the Neighbor Family tomorrow.

Yay mini!!!!

Thanks all for the well-wishes... heading to the hospital in a few minutes.
Will be offline til Wed evening at least.
Love to you all! Sure helps to know there is love being sent into the universe today.

Xoxo, NL and NG! I'm thinking of you guys today.

Esperanza, I'm relieved to hear that Mini's scan was normal.

Kathy, I hope you all didn't get too much damage from the hail! We get a reasonable amount of hail every summer, which is frequently ruinous for crops and outdoor cars. (It's weird to me that ice balls can form in the sky on warm days.)

kathy a. said...

This was just tiny little hail balls (smaller than dried split peas), and it didn't last long -- not large ice balls! It's just that we can hear stuff like this in the house as it hits the roof and skylights. :)

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'm glad it was just the tiny pellets! Weirdly, we can get big hail on really hot days (mostly as part of awful storms, including tornadoes).

AW/W: I'm working on our taxes! It's overall non-painful (because we get money back), but I'm pretty exhausted from the process. But: money back! But: it looks like it's all spoken for immediately!

W: Mini is in the midst of an allergy attack (I think--she has full energy but a lot of sniffles and coughing), and I just cannot stand listening to the sniffles. And she's insisting on being rightnexttome and coughing. Ick. This whine makes me feel very small and petty, but ick.

kathy a. said...

Passing the tissues, warm tea or something (that helps with coughs), and some distraction, Esperanza. xoxo

esperanza said...

I have been informed that lollipops help with the cough. (I need that eye-rolling emoji, Blogger. Get on it).

kathy a. said...

Whatevs. It might actually help... (basically cough drops on a stick, w/o the menthol.)

So, my daughter's excited because apparently this term's professors got a memo that last term's didn't, about how useful practice tests are, and they should be given. Yay! Tomorrow is a practice oral argument for her legal writing class - low key, only a few minutes, only a TA and opposing counsel (a classmate) will be there, no need to dress up. Perfect. She can definitely talk reasonably and forcefully about a position; she just kinda forgets that ability sometimes. And it will help to get low-key feedback.

Hey, have any of y'all ever made hummus? Can it be frozen?

kathy a. said...

Um, haven't made it. Don't know why it couldn't be frozen, though.

esperanza said...

Google says yes. I just trust y'all more than Google.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I've successfully frozen pureed chickpeas before (there was a phase where this was E's favourite baby food, believe it or not), and I can't think of any reason why tahini wouldn't freeze well as well. Go ahead and freeze hummus!

kathy a. said...

Stuff with oils of some kind doesn't usually end up with freezer burn, anyway.

esperanza said...

I was going to make roasted red pepper hummus, but I can't see any reason why that would make a difference.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Roasted red peppers freeze really well!

W: E is coughing a bunch today. She was a bit congested at the end of last week, and now it's developed into a full-blown cold. And all our plans for the rest of the week are outdoor winter activities! I hope this doesn't get any worse.

Sue said...

Hugs and love to the Neighbour Family.

I'll try and check in later - it's an insane week around here. Hugs pixies!!

esperanza said...

AW: hummus is pretty good. I didn't have a lemon but did have a lime, so I used that and some white vinegar. I think it works.

W: that feels like the only thing I've really accomplished today, and I haven't even cleaned up the mess yet.

Thanks to you all for your love and support. Surgery was successful, and we are back home after a night in the PICU (planned).
Doing well (knock wood)
So thankful for amazing doctors and nurses, and friends sending messages of love and support.

kathy a. said...

Yay for the hummus! Boo on the mess.

QWP, do a little steam therapy if E is still coughing. Or warm tea-like stuff. A little outdoor time might be good! Know you will take breaks as needed.

Hooray, NL! So glad it went well, and you're back home, and that the medical team was wonderful!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

NL, what a relief that it went well and you're back home! I hope the recovery goes really smoothly.

kathy a. said...

Do you ever have the kind of day where, apparently the dog licensing people need *more* proof that your rescue dog actually is neutered, because the vet who certified his rabies vaccine saying so is not enough, and no way can you find out when or where he had his special operation? Plus, he needs the rabies vaccine to be good for a year, so I guess that means he needs another one seeing as how he's due again in October?

And then you think, that's OK, I'm making this super wonderful thing for dinner! And that plan hits the mandoline, and suddenly your goal is, "I'm gonna keep that blood off the food." I'm doing well with that last goal!

Oh no, Kathy!!
Hope you're ok, and sorry for the deluge of exasperating events.

Sue said...

Yay, NL!!! I'm so glad the operation went so well. Hugs and love to you and healing energy for NG.

Yikes, kathy. xoxo

esperanza said...

NL for Mullet for "deluge of exasperating events!"

NL, I'm thrilled that things went well. Hoping for a smooth and speedy recovery.

kathy, some of that is mystifying to me, but I'm sorry there was so much all at one time.

kathy a. said...

The dog licensing mess is pretty inexplicable. I don't know what they expect me to do. The vet says it is too soon for him to get another rabies shot. The vet assistant asked, "who is it that wants all this paperwork?" Our county, that's who.

So, I went to TJ's and was backing slowly out of my spot. Some guy across the way was parked back first, and he just pulled out without looking, bonking my bumper. The plastic cover for his turn signal was cracked. It's an ancient car, and he said he wasn't paying attention, didn't want to exchange info. No damage for me, except the racing heart.

esperanza said...

AW: (perhaps this is not kind of me). At a chunky meeting where I was in charge, we were interviewing to approve a candidate for a job. The following conversation ensued:
Committee member: in your paperwork, you didn't mention {major concept of our shared faith}. Would you say a little bit about that concept and why you chose not to include it?
Candidate: blah blah blah, skirt issue, something vague but marginally acceptable.
Me: We suggest that you rework your paperwork, so that when you appear before the next level of interview, you'll have addressed this {major concept}
(weeks later, candidate resubmits paperwork. Still no mention of major concept)
Me, planning next level of interview, which takes place in front of 300ish people. Heh, heh, heh. Guess what your question is going to be about, weaselly candidate?

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Ha! Esperanza, that candidate really handed you an easy question.

Kathy, I hope whatever part of you cut by the mandolin is okay! And I also hope that the county gets its act together for licensing.

AW: I'm hiding out in my office, undisturbed, while E and a friend play quietly in the kitchen. They're playing so nicely that I don't want to disturb them. It's so nice to be using my actual computer (and not just my phone), and not have a preschooler climbing all over me, asking what I'm doing, and if she can touch any keys on the keyboard.

esperanza said...

yes, exactly QWP. I usually have to think something up that is rigorous but fair. This person practically wrote it themself (I'm being gender obscure on purpose).

kathy a. said...

Wow, Esperanza. That kinda sounds like an interviewing fail....

It was just a superficial cut on my thumb, and I should know better where the mandolin is concerned. It'll all be good.

Yes, QWP. Having friends over and then there is good play time? That is excellent.

The stupid animal services people don't have any phone lines for non-urgent calls. So they got a [calm, professional, stern, what are we to do now?] fax from me. No doubt they will hop right to it and correct things. HA.

kathy a. said...

OK, so this is hilarious -- doggie day care is having Olympic competitions for the next couple weeks! Categories include things like "group sit" and "waiting at the gate." It looks like they have enough medals for everybody, woof! But I can tell you, "waiting at the gate" is not one of Clyde's strengths.... That literally never happens.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That's so cute, Kathy!

kathy a. said...

Most dogs just visit occasionally; that's why they're spreading this out over a couple weeks. They started giving some awards to members of the small dog group yesterday, and ended up making up some new categories (e.g., gold for tug of war)! Think the staff is having fun with this.

NL, how's Neighbor Girl doing?

I've come to expect the Friday News Dump, lately; but it apparently spilled back to Thursday, yesterday, which is pretty exhausting for a citizen type person who tries to keep up. However -- there will be a guilty plea today!

So proud of those student survivors and their supporters! Pretty dismayed at certain politicians. The incremental progress of maybe supporting raising the age to buy to 21; maybe banning bump stocks? Not enough. Arming teachers is the most ridiculous, dangerous proposal -- it only increases the risk of gun activity on campus, does nothing about stopping the weapons that are designed for warfare. Grr.

NG is doing well-- has spent the last couple days so excited about journaling.... did people mention "bullet journaling" here? I don't love the name, but apparently that's what it is called.
She is loving it!
Has been indulging her artsy/crafty side while watching the remake of One Day At A Time.
Thankful for healing.

Just ordered eyeglasses (first pair ever) for Neighbor Boy today too.

About to start doing some grading, as the Feb break is almost over.sigh.

Thanks for checking in!

I'm so glad that NG is doing so well! (And it's indeed a strange name. It's in reference to its basis in bullet points, but it really is a violent name for something that's so lovely.)

Old Skool: I spilled tea on my hand, and burned myself a little, and am uncomfortable. Also, I'm listening to a child sniffle sniffle sniffle, cough cough cough, and I keep reminding her to blow her nose, which she's only sometimes remembering to do.

AW: it was a lovely day outside, and just the right weather to go skating! (It keeps being too cold or too melty, or incredibly windy on a lot of the days that are technically the right temperature.) E suggested that we cross-country ski to the (nearby) rink, which was such a fun idea! We only had the boots for E and me to ski, and Mr. Q and our friend walked (and carried all our skating paraphernalia), but that worked out well.

esperanza said...

We have sniffle, cough here x 2 kids who seem to have forgotten that they ever knew how to blow their noses.

Your pictures looked so fun, QWP! And so Canadian! We're still dealing with damp and dreary here.

AW: We had a friend/colleague over for supper tonight. His wife died in November, and he lives nearby. He is still so sad and bewildered, but it was nice to offer him some company.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

My friend and I were joking about how our (unintentionally matching) Canada mittens made us look very, very Canadian in all the pictures. Between our mittens (which are a variation on the Team Canada mitts from 8 years ago), the skiing, and the skating, we were basically a mini-Olympics event here.

Esperanza, I'm so glad that you guys could encourage your friend today.

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, that's so lovely your friend came over! Everybody kind of says, "ask me for anything" after a death -- but a couple months later, nobody is offering comfort. So kudos to you and your family. xoxo

Observation: Moms stock tissues. The mailman asked me if I had some the other day, because he was having snuffles when I was headed out to the car. And I always carry some in the purse, hand them out if needed. "Keep it!"

Snow events with small people! Go, team Q!

Y'all, the puppy is so cute. And smart. She's gone potty outside 4 times and inside zero times. Baboos are in heaven.

kathy a. said...

Animal services actually called me late on a Saturday afternoon, in response to my "what are we to do" fax about their insane licensing rules. And I think we know where to go from here -- they'll give us a shorter license, to be renewed when Clyde needs another rabies shot; and, we just need our vet to state the date on which he "verified" that Clyde is not reproductive (seeing how we cannot possibly get the date and place where the special operation occurred). Plus, a partial refund since the license won't last that long. I'm hoping the vet will just write a note, and we don't need an appointment.

New Puppy! For the Esperanza family!!! So glad things are going well!

Sorry I didn't see your post before the latest dog whine. xoxo

Queen of West Procrastination said...

New puppy!!! And reasonable progress on Clyde getting licensed! It's dog news everywhere today. (Again you're demonstrating the usefulness of the fax machine!)

esperanza said...

W: ow. My heel hurts, right more than left. I cleaned house most of the day on Friday without wearing decent arch support, and now I'm g00gling "plantar fascitis exercises." Ow.

W: Puppy wakes up and needs to go potty instantaneously.

W: Combo of whine #2 and whine #1 means doing the "stretch your foot 10 times before standing up" isn't working out so well.

W: I didn't get near enough sleep last night. Partly my fault, partly puppy's fault. She didn't do too bad, and the thunderstorm at 5 AM woke both of us up, but whew. I'm already dragging.

kathy a. said...

Oh, my -- the puppy scramble! Hope things settle down, and that your foot is better. xoxo
