Puppy Whining

The puppy would like to whine (literally, piercingly) that the Baboos went to school in that big, loud, yellow thing; and now she can't find them, and she's stuck with boring Mama.

Mama would like to whine that there has been interrupted sleep and a lot of wiping and picking up of unmentionables off the floor. Puppy is about 50% house trained, so I guess that's better than it could be.

Baboos would like to whine that they had to go to school and are missing out on all the fun.

AW: But holy cow, she is cute.

She's so cute!!!

W: a stomach virus has hit me suddenly, and violently. I just texted Mr. Q to ask if he could call in a sub, and come back home to take care of E, since all I'm able to do is curl up on the bathroom floor and take small sips of water.

esperanza said...

Oh, QWP, that is a terrible, awful feeling. May it depart as quickly as it arrived.

Anonymous said...

Oh no QWP! Hope you are feeling better quick!

Also, I am not a dog person (nightmares as a child, plus maybe allergies) but wow that puppy is cute!!!!

AW: Mr. Q came home (the VP had to cover for him, because subs were 100% booked ahead of time today), and then I had a nap, and I've managed to keep down a cup of apple sauce.

W: there is no possibility for Mr. Q to be home again tomorrow, and so I'd better get over this plague in a hurry. (I think that means I'm going to need to keep E home from preschool tomorrow, unless I can find someone else to take her.)

That is one cute pup! Thanks for hosting, Esperanza. Hope everybody settles down soon, because sleep is also good.

QWP, hope you feel better. And that someone can escort E to preschool tomorrow. xoxo

I have done chores. Clyde is at (YAY!) doggie day care, and he was also a good dog yesterday and last night, despite the disappointment of The Dog Man being away overnight. Which, sadly, is going to be happening more often due to work stuff -- including entire weeks in April. Gah.

Tonight, there will be roasted chicken thighs (marinating), and roasted potato plus halved Brussel sprouts. And, everybody else's favorite, kibble. ;)

Queen of West Procrastination said...

AW: my sister offered to drop off E at preschool, and then Mr. Q can go and pick her up! (It'll mean he has to leave his class for a minute and bring her back, but the school will be much happier with that arrangement than with our original plan, which involved him taking a sick day.)

esperanza said...

QWP, in similar situations (like when I was sick or a sister was sick and contagious), the preschool director would bring the non-sick Baboo out to the car. If you're not well enough to drive to the preschool, that won't work obviously, but if you are, it might be worth an inquiry.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That would be tricky for this particular preschool (because of chaos at the end of the day, but also because they need an adult there to help kids into their snow suits, and the teacher would also have to bundle up to bring her outside). But, thankfully, the preschool is attached to the K-12 school where Mr. Q works, and where my sister is a frequent sub, plus there's another high school teacher who has a kid in the same class, who might be able to coordinate something with Mr. Q for the end of the day, since I normally pick up her daughter, and she's also having to make alternative arrangements. None of this would be a problem if the preschool didn't let out fifteen minutes before the rest of the school!

esperanza said...

Oh. Right. Snowsuits. Ha! Things that clearly do not cross my mind!

I'm a mix of melancholy and happy for friends tonight: our friends, whose daughter is E's school bestie, are moving eight hours away from us in a few months. I suspected that this would be the case (my friend's husband is a pastor, and he's been looking for work), but I'm really going to miss them! And E is going to miss her bestie a lot.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

AW: my stomach is significantly better today!
W: I was awake half the night with muscle pain, and now all the pain has concentrated in my head and neck. Every time I change positions, I'm overwhelmed with stabbing pain on the left side of my head.

Still better than throwing up, obviously.

Today's crock pot adventure: white bean soup, with onion, garlic, chicken broth, spices, pepper, assorted veggies (chopped hard veggies, chopped mushroom, chopped spinach, small-chopped pasilla pepper, grated carrots), and the last chicken sausage with artichoke and garlic. I quick-soaked the dry beans, and most of the rest was just hanging around, waiting to be used up.

QWP, hope you're feeling better. So sorry E's friend is moving away. Can they plan to send cards or art to one another? Maybe talk on the phone, or skype every so often? I just had a vivid memory of a preschool friend, and how exciting it was if she called me on the phone!

Oh my, that is one adorable pup!!! She's already reached Peak Head Tilting!

(((QWP))) I'm glad you're feeling somewhat better, but still...Bleh.

kathy, I love hearing about your food adventures.

After a very full, very snowy (and of course, it was held just outside the city where the plows aren't out early) Big Chunky Meeting, I came home Sunday quite done in. I've been off for two days since, and am beginning to recover. I seriously hurt everywhere in my body on Sunday night - just achy, but also had back pain from cheap church chairs. I think it's a sign. That I'm not 40 anymore. *sigh*

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Hugs, Sue. Might I recommend bringing along some kind of back cushion? My dad also has a lot of trouble with cheap plastic chairs.

AW: I'm doing a lot better now!
W: I strongly suspect food poisoning. And, based on my getting sick (and E not getting sick), and the amount of time, I also have a strong suspicion about where I could have contracted it, and don't know whether/how to address it, because it's delicate.

Anonymous said...

QWP-- so glad you're feeling better!

My thought would be if it is someplace you are likely to have to eat again, maybe it is worth addressing? If it is at a relative's place, maybe checking in to see if anyone else got sick could be a lead in to the conversation.... ?
I don't know-- otherwise maybe it is worth just avoiding eating there again?
(that's my go-to strategy, but has crossed several otherwise well-liked restaurants off my list).

Glad you're feeling better at any rate!

:) Neighbor Lady

Queen of West Procrastination said...

It was a relative's house, and definitely somewhere where we'll be eating again. (My suspicion is that it was cross contamination from raw chicken on a surface in their kitchen, rather than undercooked food, based on prior observations of food handling. I'm torn between "I can't really prove that the food was handled immediately, and maybe I did it to myself by failing to wash raw veggies sufficiently, and it's someone who would feel really bad" and "but seriously, I've seen raw chicken not cleaned up properly there, and my kid sometimes eats there.")

Queen of West Procrastination said...

My diplomatic (and good at addressing things) husband is going to address it.

kathy a. said...

It would only be polite to thank the hosts, and inquire gently if other family fell ill... The cause is uncertain, but if a bunch got sick, you're suffering together. Kinda. And more sanitary procedures could ensue in the future, if quietly.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

This was Mr. Q's thought as well. Also, he has had a lot of food safe training, and he was realising that he could step up and help in the kitchen more when we go over there, and then gently give suggestions about safer practises (especially about meat handling).

Sue said...

I'm glad you're feeling better QWP, and I like Mr. Q's approach.

Next time - a cushion. At other meetings, I have taken something soft to sit on, and it does help.

W: I had a rough night with vertigo. I woke up in the night and had to hang onto the furniture to get to the bathroom. It's a bit better this morning, but not completely gone. The standard nausea is easing up a bit too. I'm staying at home today, as there is no way I can drive like this.

kathy a. said...

((( Sue )))

Queen of West Procrastination said...

(((Sue))) I'm so sorry that the vertigo is acting up.

AW: I did something useful today! I was dithering about emailing my city councillor about some recent votes (and his comments on stuff), and my mom urged me to phone him, because she heard that he frequently cites phone calls that he received. And so I did! And had a long talk with him! And forcefully made my position known in favour of bettering public transit and making our city more walkable.

Go, Constituent Queen!

How 'bout that sporting goods chain, eh? Step in the right direction, anyway.

The sun came out for a minute, but alas, more gloom with rain predicted later. We need the rain, but can't the universe just do that at night, let us have sun in the daytime?

esperanza said...

Is there maternity leave for people with new puppies? It would be a good idea. I. am. tired.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That's really good news from that sporting goods chain! I notice the absence of such pledges from their direct competitor (which is also in Canada), and so I'll continue to avoid shopping at that certain competitor.

kathy a. said...

Did you guys know there is such a thing as guacamole hummus? It is my new favorite spread.

Oh, Esperanza. Good thing she's cute, eh?

esperanza said...

oh, hummus! (blech on guacamole hummus, because blech on avocados). I have a report from "can you freeze hummus?" The answer is yes. But when I defrosted it, it was somehow drier than before. I added a little water, stirred it up, and presto! Pretty yummy, if I do say so myself.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'm glad that it worked! (And I should have warned you that you need to add a bit of water when you defrost. That was the same with the chickpea puree that I used to freeze when E was a baby.)

W: that thing where you ALMOST feel better, and so you feel like you ought to be able to get things done, but you're so tired that you really can't function, and then you're just grumpy all the time.

AW: I just heard Mr. Q arrive home, and so I no longer have to worry about being a functional parent. (And by "functional" I mean "occasionally interact with her, while persuading her to just watch a LITTLE more TV, so that she's not begging me to play actively with her.")

esperanza said...

I think you warned me, QWP, but I have puppy brain. It's like infant brain but not quite as bad. I hope you feel better soon.

Sue said...

Yay sporting goods store in the US!

Sorry to hear about the puppy tiredness, esperanza. Eventually she will sleep through the night...(says the woman who woke up to scratch a kitten's chin at 3:00 am because, kittens) ;)

I'm in the office today feeling better. Not spinny at all, but just generally blech. And I have such a mountain of work in front of me, I'm taking a break to process the To Do list.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Sue, that's adorable that you woke up at 3am to scratch a kitten's chin. And I'm glad that you're feeling better, but sorry that you're feeling blech.

AW: I'm mostly better now.
W: I'm so exhausted, you guys. So exhausted. I baked some bread this morning (because we were out and it's honestly less tiring to bake it, letting the mixer knead it, than to drive or walk to the grocery store), I walked E to school, and I dropped off her application/registration package for kindergarten, and now I need to do absolutely nothing until it's time to go and pick her up. I can't believe how tired I am.
AW: my cousin rescheduled her trip to our city, so that she's not staying at our house this weekend, and so I don't need to do the frantic clean today that I thought I did.

kathy a. said...

Sending virtual puppy pads to Esperanza, and also some of that pet deodorizer for any whoopsies. I don't actually know how the pads work with puppies, since I have them for the indoor cat who prefers to pee outside the box. Maybe it's best to let the little pup out instead, since that's where you want her to go.

Cats do have some endearing qualities, and love in the night can be one of them.

I've been forced to write my senators and congresscritter again, and their email forms all want me to tick a "topic" box, and this week's flood of news crosses categories, even if it is inter-related. Oh, well. I kept it to 6 points and wrote concisely. Didn't even know what to ask, except that they try to do something.

esperanza said...

Yeah, I'd much rather her learn to go outside than on a puppy pad. So far, so good today.

kathy a. said...

Go, Daisy! Such a good girl!

QWP, kudos for making bread, and trying to sell us on how that's easier than going to the store! Maybe one day I'll learn.... And also, the K package is in!!

And hooray for the on-the-kitchen reporting from Esperanza, about freezing hummus to good effect!

esperanza said...

I have those days, where making bread (or whatever) is easier than going to the store. I detest grocery shopping. #firstworldproblems

kathy a, I hate those "click a topic" email forms. All it does for my senators is to generate a form letter that in general addresses the topic about which I was writing, but doesn't address my concerns. It just generates the senator's talking points....which I don't usually find persuasive.

AW: E and her school bestie had a big talk about bestie's upcoming move (in May), and it was very cute. Bestie said that she can't wait to move, and it feels to long from now, and E reassured her that she'll sleep lots, and that will make the time feel not as long, and they decided to send each other mail. I think we parents are the only ones getting emotional about this. (They're so fun together! I'm going to miss them!) Happily, even though they're moving eight hours away, we drive through there sometimes, especially when we visit our old city, and so we're going to go stay with them this summer.

Kids: more resilient than adults.

kathy a. said...

Kids are resilient!

Sue said...

Yes, kids are resilient. :)

W: Now I have a head cold. Runny nose, sore throat, achy all over. I wonder if the vertigo the other night was the virus moving in to take over my body. We have established the usual hot zone (I'm working in the bedroom and staying away from hubby as much as possible). Ugh.

W: Shooting at a university in MI. Does our pixie work there??

kathy a. said...

I'm not sure which Pixie you mean, but the one I know of in MI reported that she knows students there, and is very upset.

According to news, this was a domestic thing, and the people shot did not live in that dorm. As the fabulous Liz has emphasized many times, domestic violence vastly increases the danger when a gun is someplace in the picture. Obviously, it's just dumb luck that more people weren't shot. The suspect must have been known to witnesses, because his name has already been released by police despite not yet being arrested.

It was sunny a while ago, but now there's a thunderstorm!

Sue said...

That's the pixie I was referring to, kathy. How awful.

kathy a. said...

Oh, holy cow. The reports now are that a student shot and killed his parents, who had come to pick him up for spring break. And -- that campus police took the student to the ER last night. He was released from the ER maybe an hour before shooting his parents.

This sounds very much to me like the campus police wanted him evaluated for a psychiatric emergency, but of course there are no details about why he went to the ER; coulda been something else. There will no doubt be tweets in 3, 2, 1 -- blaming the ER staff. But the fact remains, this was a fatal incident *only* because a gun was involved.

W: How many weeks have I been whining about snot-filled, mouth-breathing Baboos? Too many, that's how many. And here I still am.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I understand, esperanza! It's been an unending saga of snot here, too.

W: a snowstorm is starting up here, and we had afternoon skating plans lined up.
AW/W: I'm still dealing with a lot of weakness, and perhaps skating wasn't the best plan anyway.
AW: I've had a lot of time to tear through e-books of Agatha Christie mysteries, while curled up in fuzzy blankets.

kathy a. said...

Oy, enough with the snot already... Passing the tissues.

W: Ants. The entire 3rd Ant Infantry Battalion showed up in my kitchen this morning, infesting the sink, counter, kibble dishes, and some acreage on the floor. Major battle is over; mop up to continue.

AW: Fresh kibble now is in a secure secret location. Both felines informed and approving. ("Ant" is not their preferred condiment.)

W: Rain. That and Mr. Dog Man needing to work today is giving teh dog sadz. Plus, the ants hate rain, too.

More weirdness of the weather: The snow level dropped to 1500 feet last night, so it dusted the higher local hilltops!

Hope the pixies facing much bigger storms are doing OK!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Ants! They were the bane of my existence when I lived on your coast, Kathy. (Seriously: I chronicled my battle against them on my blog.) That's fun that you had some snow-dusted hills there!

kathy a. said...

It's been years since we had more than a few stray ants wander in (following an intense effort to block their entry points). Weird!

Mr. Elderly Neighbor went to the hospital 3 months ago, and then spent a couple months in rehab, and he's being discharged. He can shuffle a little bit with his walker, but needs a 2 person lift to get him upright, or transfer him to a chair. His cognition has declined, and it wasn't great before. He's on a PEG feeding tube now, because he can't take in enough nutrition or liquid himself; so that also requires some special care. They are moving to their daughter's in-law apartment for now (since their own house isn't accessible). The facility recommended 24/7 caregivers; or at a minimum, 8 hours a day. Mrs. Neighbor won't allow more than 4 hours a day, although she cannot lift him herself. I'm so sad about this very stressful situation for them.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Oh, Kathy. What a sad situation. And how concerning that Mrs. Neighbor won't allow more than 4 hours of care per day. (This happened with both of my sets of grandparents, as well, and resulted in the caregiver grandparents having their own health deteriorate.)

kathy a. said...

This isn't my business; except to express concern that Mrs. has gone 3 months solid with no break, daughter's hardly taken any time, and it sounds like he needs a lot of help. But their (very) adult children will keep weighing in. Crossing fingers.

Things are much better on the ant front.

And I think the storm's over for now. More later in the week, reportedly; but The Man and The Dog are taking a nice long hike today.
