Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!

Hope that our Canadian Pixies and their families enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving!

Political update:  I found it quite surprising, and imagine you did as well, when Canada was described in yesterday's debate as a "disaster."   Just one little completely bizarre point, among so many.  My horror-o-meter soared past eleventy, and I'm scared it might get broken before all this is over.

Weather report:  We're gonna get rain this week!  The most in 6 months!  The southern part of my state seems to be permanently set to "broil," but this is at least a start.

Pet report:  With cooling temps, we have returned to a 2 cat sleeping pattern.  One has dibs on my head, and the other on my feet.  The dog is having an exciting day barking at the roofers working next door.

Gourmet corner:  My beloved cooked teriyaki salmon, rice, and spicy green beans last night, and also started a crock-pot of beef burgundy for tonight.  Going to be hard to top that, later in the week.  ;)

What's the news where you live?

My political horror is that, among my FB friends, only a couple of the R persuasion have been sufficiently horrified. But they are still not going to vote for HRC. They will be writing in someone else. And a whole host of people have doubled down on their support for DT. The level of hatred for HRC is so strong that I don't think anything can change their minds. I just wish they would stop broadcasting it on the book of faces.

I'm still mad about the Canada reference! (For those who need numbers for discussion, when Canada is brought up as the bogeyman: last year 52,000 Canadians, or 0.1% of the total population, sought medical treatment outside of their country. At the same time, roughly 757,000 Americans -- or 0.2% of the population -- sought treatment outside their own country. Also US medical wait times, on average, are worse than Canadian ones! Just because a rich person can pay to jump to the front of the line doesn't mean that the line goes faster.)

Dude just makes shit up. My mind = POP.

The level of hatred for HRC truly baffles me. It seems to be the product of decades of dedicated trash talk; and the added something something of MENZ RULE, GIRLZ DROOL. Which, let me tell you, has gotten pretty damned old.

Amen, Kathy!

AW: getting our second dinner ready with my in-laws, and they brought over MASSIVE quantities of garden vegetables, which should feed us until spring. I'm so excited.

esperanza said...

W: the debate was rigged, the moderators were ganging up on him, wah wah wah. I should ignore the book of faces for the next month in favor of my highly curated Twitter feed

Yay, QWP! Happy Thanksgiving again!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'm tired, you guys. Two family dinners in one weekend, both in our house, is exhausting. But!

AW: we don't have to shop for groceries this week, because family left enough food in the fridge to last us the whole week. (My mom even brought us 4L of milk, because she accidentally ordered too much from her milkman.) (P.S. my parents are some of the last people in the country who still get old-school milk delivery.)

kathy a. said...

Seriously? I remember milk delivery as a kid, but -- we're talking many decades ago. Yay for leftovers!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Seriously! I think my parents feel particularly loyal to their milk delivery service because one of my grandpas was a dairy farmer, and the other was a milkman. As long as it's available, my parents will get it.

Sue said...

Political craziness is making my head 'splode. The "disaster" re: Canadian healthcare is just over the top insanity.

Yay for milk delivery! I didn't know anyone still provided that service.

AW: Great weekend with our son and his partner. In-laws came for dinner last night and seemed okay, though both a bit subdued.

W: Sciatica is back. Dang, that hurts.

Liz Miller said...

There's a company that does milk delivery (and other things too!) near me. I keep seeing their boxes outside people's doors when I go canvassing. WANT.

But, they're twice as expensive as Wegmans.

BUT they're LOCAL, and you can meet their cows!

kathy a. said...

Even though I mostly work at home, there would be that day when the twice-as-expensive hand-delivered milk would be like cottage cheese (only truly icky) by the time someone noticed it was there. Sigh. I still try to buy local milk, though.

Meeting away this morning! It went well. Whew.

The roofers next door are still at work, but nobody's shown up with a pot of tar, so I'm counting that as an AW. :)

Teh seriously weird just seems to keep coming, with one particular campaign person. Just want to remind everyone: check your sources! And, you aren't the only one thinking, "this is fireplacingly weird."

xoxo

AW: sweet potato slices, sauteed in butter, with chili powder and feta cheese. Delicious.

Voting: I can drive 15 minutes and vote on Oct 24. Or I can wait and drive 2 miles and vote on Nov 1. I'm probably going to do it on the 24th. I can't stand it.

AW: My friend who used to live close-ish, but moved to OR last month? She's really, really happy with her new job and the whole place. I'm happy for her, but still sad for me.

esperanza said...

W: The newest political idiocy is that HRC campaign *doctored* the tapes. Mmm hmm. He already said he said it! Idiots.

kathy a. said...

Ah, Esperanza, about feeling good for your friend and still missing her like crazy.

kathy a. said...

I was hoping my mail ballot would arrive today; but just got political literature instead. :(

AW: Reviving some old photos to happy things up.

Sue said...

The crazy politics just gets crazier by the minute. Good grief, but I'm looking forward to the end of this campaign.

AW: Great news!!! Hubby and I went with the in-laws to look at a senior assisted living apartment yesterday - NEXT DOOR TO OUR BUILDING!! They have a corner unit vacant with a small but lovely living room area, kitchenette (meals are taken in the main dining room), 2 bathrooms, big bedroom, and walk-in closets. They just have to complete some paperwork and they can move in at their leisure. My MIL was anxious when we arrived at the center, but smiling by the time we got to the big closet in the bedroom. WooHoo!

kathy a. said...

Hooray, Sue! How wonderful that they took a look and loved it -- and that it is so close!

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, sounds like a great idea for sweet potatoes! I like savory spices with them, but forgot about chili (and never thought of feta, either).

Sue said...

Yes esperanza - that sounds delicious!!!!

esperanza said...

That is wonderful, Sue! Can your hubby navigate between the two buildings on his own? That would be even better!

Liz Miller said...

YAY SUE!!

Oooh, Esperanza, that sounds delicious.

AW: Look what I did today!

kathy a. said...

Liz! And I thought you only voted today. We need strong voices, and you are one, definitely.

I never ever expected to hear anybody calling for the repeal of voting rights for women; and that is how low things have sunk today. It's an impotent call; cannot happen; so I can only conclude that certain people are bent on as much destruction as possible, at this point. Jeepers.

Am trying to post happier things in the journal of visages.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Go Liz! Well done!

Wonderful, Sue! I hope that the paperwork process goes smoothly.

W: water main break down the street has led to the water being off for the entire afternoon. Things are going to get awkward if it stays off any longer.

AW: I was proactive, for once, and did a bunch of cleaning (including dishwasher, laundry, and starting turkey stock on the stove) in the morning. And I showered this morning, too!

esperanza said...

Also good: with chili powder, cumin and Parmesan cheese

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Still. No. Fireplacing. Water. It's 5pm. I'm tempted to do takeout for supper, but the stress of the afternoon is making my stomach feel upset. I don't want upset things further, with no water in the house.

esperanza said...

Oh man, QWP. That's a long time.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

WATER! After five hours.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

The water whines have taken up so much of my brain that I forgot my other woe: a kid in E's preschool had a birthday and sent each kid home with a goody bag full of stuff from the dollar store. A TINY RECORDER AND A WHISTLE in that bag. I'm being serenaded by the "toot toot toot" of the tiny recorder right now. (When E is asleep, all the annoying toys are going into the high-up bowl where I keep the annoying new toys. Then I'll wait and see if she remembers any of them when they're out of sight.)

kathy a. said...

Yay for water running!

Oh, boy, about the goody bags in preschool. First of all, this is just setting up expectations and a competition; so the next birthday kid's parents will be freaking out to top that -- and on it will go, for YEARS. Second, seriously, they had to go for the noisy toys??

I was good with muffins or cupcakes for the class, or something else for the class to share (books, maybe). But really! Might be worth talking to the teacher about reasonable limits.

kathy a. said...

PS -- the whistle is obviously meant to be saved for walking in the woods. Must save. The other thing, I vote for a tragic accident.

Sue said...

esperanza, there is a lovely field of grass between the buildings, and we're on a hill, so the most direct route is not wheelchair-friendly and the longer route includes two steep inclines. So a bit tricky for hubby on his own, as his chair is not motorized (intentionally, as using it maintains his upper body strength).

Go Liz!!!! WooHoo!!!

I'm glad you got your water back, QWP! Oy on the noisy toys in the treat bag.

esperanza said...

Well, rats, Sue. But still, it sounds like an ideal location, and I hope it all works out.

QWP, the posse is on the case. That is all kinds of silly, for the reasons kathy a outlines so articulately.

And yay for running water.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

The good thing about the birthday thing is that E's class is really small: only 8 of them in all. And I think E's birthday is next, where they'll get cupcakes and that's it. (I'm going to talk with the teacher about the best way to go about cupcakes -- I'm going to try to be a classroom volunteer that day.) And I know that parents of one of the other oldest kids in the class, and they're too busy for anything elaborate. I'll keep an eye on things, but I'm not worried yet. (The nice thing is that my own kid has really low expectations: she's been to a relatively elaborate kid birthday party, but all she wants for her own party is to have her two best friends over and eat cupcakes.)

Queen of West Procrastination said...

AW: we got through swimming lessons without incident! We went out for lunch to celebrate.

kathy a. said...

Woot about swimming, and celebrating!

Parental over-the-top, I'll-beat-that with kid birthdays is unfortunately a thing. Yeah, my kids are grown up now, but -- it still happens. BEWARE!

kathy a. said...

I'm having trouble managing the election-related cluesticks. BUT,

I've got my vote-by-mail ballot, and by gum, I'm gonna use it! Each page is 17" x 8.5, and they are printed front and back, and there are 3 of them. Thinking this will take more than one stamp, since they are printed on cardstock. There is a drop-off option.

Beloved is out of town tonight. It's just me, the pets, my daughter who is deep in applications, and I'd better remember to take all the bins out for collection tomorrow.

Baboos taking turns reading to each other while the other sister is pooping. I'm calling it a parenting win.

kathy a. said...

Sounds like a win!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'd call that a win! Such sweet sisters.

kathy a. said...

I just got a robo-poll call from IOWA about a CALIFORNIA ballot initiative. This is clearly not the weirdest thing about the election season, but really?

kathy a. said...

Besides, I ALREADY FILLED OUT MY BALLOT!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That's so weird! Was it a ballot initiative that has to do with farmers, or something?

kathy a. said...

Legalizing marijuana, so I guess there are farmers involved. In certain counties. But probably not Iowa.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Strange! Maybe whichever group is interested in the initiative just hired people from Iowa to do the calling.

AW: women's retreat this weekend! This is the first time I'll travel away from E, since she was born! (She's traveled away from me, with Mr. Q, but I've never done it myself!)

You guys, what if I was a REALLY, REALLY BAD SPOUSE, and left the house really messy before I left town for the weekend, and just let Mr. Q deal with it? I spent the morning doing laundry and turning the garden tomatoes into sauce, and I still need to make muffins to take along to the retreat, and my head is starting to hurt from exhaustion. If I push myself too much, I fear that this is going to turn into a migraine. But the kitchen is a messy nightmare, especially after the sauce-making! I'd be so mad if Mr. Q did this before leaving town.

kathy a. said...

Have fun at the retreat! Sounds like you've done plenty of homestead work today anyway. Maybe the house will still be a mess when you get home; maybe not; who cares?

xoxo

Liz Miller said...

Leave the mess, take the muffins. Better yet, buy the muffins.

I think Kathy's call came from a staffer currently present in California who called with their own cell phone which they got in Iowa.

I know staffers currently in VA whose phones announce they are calling from such places as Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, etc.

kathy a. said...

It was a robo-call -- yeah, for a poll -- so I imagine it was outsourced. Or maybe it was a fake polling thing. Who knows?

Anonymous said...

In that case, they hired an Iowa polling company.

Liz on iphone

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Oh, that kind of thing happens here all the time. During our provincial election, I received out-of-province robocalls because they hired a polling company.

AW: I baked two dozen muffins (a dozen and a half to take, and a half dozen to leave because I knew that E would want some once I started making them), and did a cursory clean of the kitchen (just so much that the kitchen wouldn't attract more fruit flies). So, my conscience is clear.

esperanza said...

W: Cleaning bathrooms today. Our master bath is ginormous. We use maybe 60% of it. I hate it.

AW: Mr E and I are headed out for a retreat next week. This is the one we missed last year because of his nephew's suicide. So I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll make it, but fearful that his brother will have a complete meltdown (his brother's complete meltdowns usually involve a call to the police).

kathy a. said...

Good work, QWP!

Oh, Esperanza. Fingers crossed. This does not sound like a positive thing, but so long as the police are aware there is a mental health thing going on -- maybe they can put him in a safer place until he settles down. xoxo

kathy a. said...

That didn't really come out right. Hoping he can get re-directed to an involuntary mental health assessment -- if he's not willing to get some health care in advance of crisis.

esperanza said...

To be clear: the meltdown is just my fear right now, not reality. My fear is based in past experience. He is getting counseling, for the first time in his life. And, last I heard, he has stopped drinking, which is also a major trigger for bad behavior. Police notes probably include "domestic violence" and "property damage."

On a related note, in your free time you might search for "San Antonio police mental illness response team" or something along those lines. They are hugely progressive with mental illness and are really helping. It's a feel good story.

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, sounds like he's made progress! And also like the local PD has, on mental health issues.

kathy a. said...

omg, my beloved just came back from a work trip to the city of his youth. And he came back with a carload of foodstuffs! Wine, jam, raisins, jarred grape leaves, this Armenian cured beef, a dessert made with grape juice and walnuts, jarred baby walnuts, 3 dozen lamajoun (Armenian pizza), pastries, fresh bread, a case of large crackerbread, bulghar wheat (we have SO much of this stuff, and never use it), and some kind of pasta.

Son is coming tomorrow, so some will be offloaded.

kathy a. said...

I forgot to mention a few items, and the fresh grapes were all eaten on the way home. Seriously, he goes there and he buys everything. First stop is the farm products store at the local university; second stop is the Armenian bakery and store his mom loved. Sometimes there are also produce stands. But it all makes him so happy!

esperanza said...

That all sounds really yummy, kathy a. Comfort food for him.

AW: Sweet had a really, really good week at school. Her teachers seem to be getting a handle on her personality and are good at celebrating her strengths and victories.

kathy a. said...

Go, Sweet!

Yay Sweet!
esperanza, fingers crossed for your brother in law and also hope you and your husband have a great retreat!
QWP, hope you have a wonderful weekend retreat!
Kathy a. that sounds delicious!!!!

Sue said...

I hope you're having a great weekend, QWP!

Crossing fingers and toes for your retreat this week, esperanza. It's been quite a year for your family, so I do hope all remains calm on the BIL front and you are able to enjoy the week.

Also - yay Sweet for a great week at school!!

kathy, that sounds delicious!!! And interesting!

W: Set-back yesterday. MIL ended up in emerg yesterday. She freaked out in the morning, wouldn't eat or drink anything, and by mid-day was throwing up and disoriented. FIL didn't know what else to do so he called an ambulance. They gave her iv fluids as she was quite dehydrated, didn't find any other physical problems (I had been thinking UTI) and sent her home. We're hoping this is just a blip. Her freak-out was about the move. :(

kathy a. said...

Oh, no, Sue! I'm glad it wasn't anything serious -- but wow, poor MIL. It cannot be fun for her to collapse into a stressball.

I'm sure that once it is over, she'll discover it is as great as she thought when they visit. It certainly will be easier for your FIL to summon help when she needs it. xoxo

esperanza said...

Oh no, Sue! Moving is uber stressful. I'm sorry about the freakout.

kathy a. said...

This seems like a long weekend already. Son never showed up for the "work on car" thing; that is apparently put off until tomorrow. Daughter is stressed. Hey, everybody's stressed, I guess, because for a short time I thought it was Sunday already. Walking of the dog is occurring [without me] ahead of the next storm system. yay.

kathy a. said...

More rain! Daughter loves it, and went with beloved and the dog for a hike in the mud. Car repair and creative cursing is scheduled for later. One cat is on the heater vent, and the other is huddled behind me on the chair; cats have priorities. ;)

Today I officially joined the church I've been attending and volunteering at for the last 12 years. Mr. Spock's been a member for 7 or 8 years.

I'm a Jewnitarian!

Also, I made lamb stew and spaghetti sauce. The spaghetti sauce got made into baked ziti, with elbow macaroni playing the role of ziti.
