Night Owls & Early Birds & Their Mamas All Whining

Yep. Mini is a certified Night Owl, complete with "I don't want to get up. I'm tired. I'm going back to sleep."

And Sweet is a certified Early Bird. At least she has good sleep habits.

If you're doing the math, all of that means that Mama is caught staying up too late and getting up too early.

How are the Pixies?

On the upside, we're getting a nice rain, the Baboos are at school, and Mama is going to take a nap.

We had something like that night owl / early bird thing going on when the kids were small...

Yesterday was rocky, but might have turned the corner on the pain overnight. My last pain pill was last night, and I'm not in agony -- so, knock wood, the jumbo advil might be enough now.

My daughter made this extremely cute cat pillow a few months ago -- it is kind of like a tubular pillow with a head at one end and a tail at the other. Anyway, that pillow has been a considerable help since it is perfect for holding an ice pack in place, allowing some gentle pressure on the belly at my desk, etc. Yes, I am carrying a stuffed animal around with me all day. :)

Kathy a, whatever works.

Oy Esperanza. Sorry about the sleep deprivation, but yay for school!

Please send me patient thoughts, I'm going to be phone banking for my preferred Presidential candidate tonight with one of the nicest and most annoying people on the planet.

kathy a. said...

Patience brain-waves going out to Liz! (How does someone manage nice and highly annoying?)

Tip: a wet washcloth folded inside a ziploc and frozen makes an excellent ice pack. (I stole that from daughter, too.)

ooh, I know overly nice and annoying people. Church World is crawling with them. Exhibit A: we used to have a friend in seminary who was overly helpful. He literally offered to give me a ride somewhere *before* he remembered he didn't have a car. Nice. But annoying.

So, Liz, you have my sympathies, and I will sent patience waves as well.

W: a friend just turned in her resignation after working at the same church for 17 years. She is sad but knows it's the right decision. I'm listening.

W; crummy nap this morning left me feeling more tired than before.

Liz Miller said...

I hate those kinds of naps. Ugh.

Nice but annoying in this instance is generosity, kindness, and eagerness to be useful with strong helpings of demands that I do educational outreach in a whiny nasal voice and a tendency to hum under her breath.

I don't mind doing educational outreach, but her particular demand is that I do the outreach to mothers with young children at the library. Which...yes, it might be useful and fun, but who is going to put the event together? I told her I'd be happy to be a speaker at an event if she would put the event together. She wants me to put it together because she doesn't know where to start. I told her that the person who comes up with a good idea is rewarded by having to implement it.

That conversation is repeated every. time. I. see. her.

Nice. But annoying.

Yay for cat pillows, but sympathies on continuing pain and ick. Hope it resolves completely soon!
Sympathies for lack of sleep and bad naps and people who aren't as kind as they seem at first blush...
Sometimes I try very hard not to talk in meetings for the very reason you stated, Liz. LOL.

Speaking up in a meeting is precisely how I got saddled with Albatrossi #1 and #2.

kathy a, hoping that the pain is lessening.

W: Night Owl Mini does not appear to be sleepy, despite her accumulated sleep deficit. I think she's inherited my dad's genes for not needing much sleep.

Liz Miller said...

She was not annoying at all!!! YAY!!! Got through 34 calls on her own. I did 44. It all went very well and then we went out to dinner.

I may have gotten her hooked on phone banking. She wants to do it again Sunday.

kathy a. said...

Yay, not annoying! And you have a recruit!

Sue said...

Hi all - checking in now that I'm back from the land of Happy Needles. The appointment went well, though I did bleed quite a bit. As in, enough to get big ole drops on my (thankfully, black) sweater. Doc says it's not unusual and not to worry.

AW: Dinner with our son and his sweetie, plus sweetie's Mom and Nana (who is 94 and a firecracker - she was amazing!).

Now - laundry.

Sorry about the Night Owl, esperanza. :(

Yay, Liz! I'm glad the potentially annoying person was not annoying after all.

kathy a. said...

Sue, wonderful about the good visit with son and sweetie, and that the Happy Needles delivered!

Another exciting day of power-watching netflix. Threw a pork roast and veggies into the crock pot (although I personally might stick with plain noodles for another night). Tomorrow, I might attempt a small errand!

kathy a. said...

It really frosts my something to hear that the senate judiciary committee will refuse to even consider ANY nominee for the vacant seat on SCOTUS. It's right there in the consitution -- the president nominates, they "advise" on the nomination. Really unthinkable.

esperanza said...

Hooray for small errands, kathy a! Glad to hear of improvement!

W: Please ponder with me the appropriateness of the following word problem for the developmental level of a first grader: "Mia has 35 crayons. Sara has 10 more crayons than Max. Max has 1 more crayon than Mia. Which number shows 10 less than the number of crayons Sara has?" Then it gives four options. Sweet barely can do a straightforward, non-word problem with 1 more/1 less/10 more/10 less, which is what the lesson is on. This is a FOUR STEP problem. I am perturbed.

Good grief, esperanza! That's ridiculous!
yay for the good visit with your son and his sweetie and family! Glad for the headache relief too!
Your dinner sounds delicious, kathya. Hope you are able to enjoy it too, or at least leftovers tomorrow! Sending soothing healing thoughts.
And, yeah, the SCOTUS situation is appalling. Perhaps the committee can just meet with whomever is willing to actually, you know, show up for work.

W: Muddy playground (no recess) + no P.E. today + trip to orthodontist 45 minutes away (aka lots of sitting in the car) = Mini with WAY too much energy left over at the end of the day. Sweet had the same combination but went to bed right on time.

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, that is way complicated for 1st grade homework! Hope Mini settled down, eventually.

AW: I slept so well last night, first time in ages. And the pain is better. Yay!

Sue said...

Wow, esperanza, that's ridiculous!

AW: We got a massive missive from our national church office about some BIG remits that need to be approved at the congregational level by this time next year. You know what that means, right?

Yup. NEW BINDER!!! With tabs and everything. So far, that is what I have accomplished today.

W: Clearly, I don't get out much. This is actually what I consider fun. *sigh*

esperanza said...

Hooray for good sleep, reduced pain, and new binders!

AW: one parent-teacher conference down. The easy one.

kathy a. said...

Ooooh! Binder, with tabs! (I feel accomplished when I make one of those, too.)

Fingers crossed for the other p/t conference, Esperanza.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Esperanza: that first grade word problem is ridiculous. (I feel like we only did adding and subtracting, when I was that age.) Crossing appendages for the parent-teacher conference.

Kathy, I'm glad that you're healing well, and are being so resourceful with your recovery!

Sue: welcome back from Happy Needles City! And you made me smile, with your binder excitement. I know the feeling very well.

This SCOTUS situation. Sometimes I feel like the whole system needs a hard reboot, or maybe a firmware upgrade? Something is broken.

W: colds are going around this house, and are worst in me. I had to postpone a dental appointment on Monday, because I couldn't stop sneezing. Meanwhile, my child is grumpy, and keeps trying not to poop, because she likes to keep me on my toes. I'm filling her up with bran muffins, and fibre-filled smoothies (thank goodness she doesn't understand fibre), and hopefully today I will win this battle. Oh, and she doesn't believe in napping, which is why I haven't been around in a while. Tired.

AW: piano tuner coming here in an hour! Fingers crossed that this old piano is tunable!

W: oh dear goodness, I just realised that I'm going to have to run interference, with a child who won't nap. Hopefully TV will distract her while the tuner works.

esperanza said...

Oh dear, QWP, I'm sure piano tuners are quite interesting.

We have never had the "holding poop intentionally" issue, though I will share the following: Mini is pretty into potty humor right now. So the other night, they were getting undressed for showers. She calls me into the bathroom. I go to the bathroom, where she is in the doorway, naked bottom pointed toward me. Once I arrive and inquire as to why she's called me, she toots, then laughs hysterically. She was holding the toot until I got there! OK, it was funny. Then I told her it was rude.

Hope you feel better soon.

kathy a. said...

QWP, hope all went well with the piano tuner. I agree, that sounds pretty darned interesting. No advice on the poop issue except the standard "this too shall pass." So to speak.

Sue-- I love your binder excitement! Love getting organized! (actually, I love the new binder and tabs, and then I love it once I AM organized. It's the "getting" part in between that's tough!)

Fellow Night Owl here, checking in. I quit/lost my job on February 1st, so while unemployed and unencumbered, I've completely gotten my day/night sleep cycle all disturbed. I don't really want to talk about the work situation, due to the embarrassment and humiliation angle.

Finally got to sleep tonight, and was woken up barely 30 minutes later by a dream reliving my Mom's death. I was holding her hand as she passed away, and this time, she was looking at me, and pleading me with her eyes to save her, help her, and there wasn't anything I could do. Needless to say, I am not sleeping any more tonight.

Offspring is in London for Study Abroad and I had to call her today to tell her that she got her Pap results back (from right before she left) and that it read as "low-grade squamous cell lesion" and I had to calm her down and tell her that while she can't ignore it, that she should get it checked and retested as soon as she gets home. This is after trying to get someone in the doctor's office to talk to me after calling and leaving messages for 6 days.

Today has been incredibly bad. Go away, bad day.

kathy a. said...

KLee, how is Offspring liking her time abroad? This is such an extraordinary opportunity for her! I know you miss her, but hope that all this newfangled technology has helped you as it did me, when my daughter was away.

It is still so soon after your beloved mom died. It is OK and normal to feel a wild mix of emotions, for memories to flood back, etc. Your dream is kind of factual in that you wanted so badly to have a way to save her -- and the fireplacing cancer did not care. xoxo Your mom knew, absolutely, that she was loved -- and she obviously loved you with all her heart. You were her constant advocate. That strong bond can't be broken, even if she is no longer physically here. You will always have her with you. In time, it won't feel so raw.

I am so sorry about your job -- this wasn't the time for something else bad to happen. But I hope very much that the next thing is not so fraught as the politics at your workplace have been the past couple years. xoxoxox

Prayer and positive thoughts please, you guys. We just found out that my SIL's partner was in a bad car accident, and he's in serious condition in the hospital. (And the driver, his friend, died in the accident.) SIL is finishing up her nursing degree in Big City in Sue Province, and he's here in the hospital. We're going to need to figure out how best to support him, and SIL, and his little daughters.

I don't know if that made sense. I'm a bit freaked out right now. I keep going and hiding in my bedroom to discuss this with people, because we haven't explained to E that Uncle is in the hospital. (And I don't yet know what "serious condition" means specifically. All my information has come from a text from my FIL, and from the news.)

kathy a. said...

Oh, QWP! How terrible. Sending much love. oxox

Serious means he has bad injuries, but not life-threatening. It is very non-specific. "Critical" is a worse + scary category; "good" is what you want to happen next. Also you want "stable."

Anything practical and specific that you can offer is good -- food, errands, calling people, kid care, whatever works for you. Just plain love is good.

esperanza said...

How scary, QWP! I hope information gets clearer and things begin to fall into place.

Good news: he's doing way better than expected. It looks like his injuries are: concussion, eye infection, broken wrist, and a bunch of bruising. He's had CT and MRI scans, and they look great (but they want to do one more CT in the morning). This is straight-up miraculous, since they were hit my a semi, and his seatbelt failed, and he was thrown from the car. (They were in an old pickup truck.) SIL's plane lands tonight (my in-laws flew her home), to help, and get him settled.

I'm so relieved. But his poor friend's family.

Oh, so glad he will be OK, QWP! xoxo

AW: another piece of Albatross #2, conquered!

W: got stuck in a traffic tie up at 10 pm last night, which put me home 45 minutes late. Mama is tired.

kathy a. said...

Oy about the traffic! Yay about the albatross.

Think I overdid it yesterday, grabbing a few items at the grocery. Pretty sure the bag was under the 15 lb. limit, but teh belly button zone is protesting today. That'll teach me. Henceforth, I shall rely on house elves.

I commented three different times, using my phone, and none of them went through. Very frustrated.

QWP -- I'm glad that he's on the mend, and that it wasn't worse. I hope he fully recovers, and with no lasting damage. I pray for the driver's family, who have got to be in a world of pain right now.

Kathy a., thank you for asking about Offspring. She's having a wonderful time, and is currently in Edinburgh for the weekend with her group. She's been going out and doing a lot of sightseeing while she's there, which is good. She's visited places that mean a lot to her personally (like the Sherlock Holmes Museum, Abbey Road, and the Beatles store, as well as King's Cross and platform 9 and 3/4) as well as monuments and historical places. She's enjoying herself, and is planning a Spring Break trip to Liverpool to visit all the important Beatles sites. She's doing a lot of the sightseeing on her own, and I applaud her courage in exploring a huge city by herself.

Thank you for all of the kind words about Mama. I am just still having a hard time with her death because it was preventable. I feel like if her oncologists had cared more about her as a person, and not as a "billable number", she would have gotten better care. I know chemo is hard, but she seemed much sicker than most people on chemo. I've known people who could do chemo and still work (albeit with lower energy and it was still difficult) but Mama was so sick, right from almost the start. I just think that if they'd paid more attention, she would still be with us. Maybe I should have spoken up more, but you trust in the people who have the alphabet soup after their names -- they went to medical school! I didn't! But, I know that the way she suffered at the end REALLY didn't have to happen. It's like it was a perfect storm of everything going as wrong as it could. I just wish she was still here. It just wasn't her time.

As for the job, waiting to see if I qualify for unemployment. That will help ease the strain. And, I have applied to get all of my retirement contributions early. I will invest some of that, and make some repairs to my house and maybe take a family trip. I'll see how much I actually get after taxes. It might be a blessing in disguise.

Thank you for letting me vent.
KLee

kathy a. said...

KLee, what an adventure for Offspring! Love that she is seeking out what she wants to see and getting there. This will give her so many skills and confidence as she moves along through life.

Fingers crossed about the unemployment benefits. It might be worth it to talk to an accountant, someone who knows taxes, to get advice about the retirement savings. It may [should?] be possible to roll most of that over to another retirement account under your control, and only pay taxes on the part you take out.

Much love about the loss of you mom. I was angry with my dad's oncologist for a long time, but from the other angle -- my dad had no hope of recovery, and this doctor just kept putting him through some new experimental treatment every time the last one didn't work. There are so many cancers; they are different; chemos are different, and they affect people differently. It is hard to find some peace with all that when a very beloved parent dies. xoxoxox

KLee, continued good thoughts and prayers for you.

AW: Chunky meeting was pretty good, as chunky meetings go.

W: so tired. Still have work to do tonight. Baboos exhausted from their late night Thursday and (I think, for Sweet particularly) the disruption in the household from me being gone. Sigh. I wish I wasn't so important sometimes :) Sweet is headed to bed at 6 pm, or as soon after that as I can manage.

AW: Sweet pulled out a 90 on her spelling test. After helping her study on Thursday, I would have expected a 70 at best. So, go Sweet!

kathy a. said...

Go, SWEET!! That's great! So is the chunky meeting progress.

Book review: Notorious RBG, about Justice Ginsburg. It is kind of a weird format, but really engaging -- a blend of life story, photo album, greatest hits from opinions broken down so they are understandable. Makes me love her even more.

esperanza said...

The Sonia Sotomayor biography is pretty good, too. If you're on a Supremes kick :)

esperanza said...

Er. By "biography" I meant "autobiography."

kathy a. said...

Oh, I love that one! Justice Sotomayor is a hero for sure: bright; grounded in the real world; just a firecracker sometimes in court. Plus, she has appeared on Sesame Street.

esperanza said...

The Sesame Street thing put me firmly in her corner.

esperanza, yay for a good chunky meeting and Albatross progress. WooHoo! And hooray for Sweet!!!!

I hope you're continuing to heal and feel better kathy.

AW: Huge chunky meeting almost over. By tomorrow noon it will be history.

W: Talk about a marathon event. It was a good meeting but I am sooooo tired. And completely peopled out.

Eek. Daughter saw a mouse in her room. Then it went and hid amidst all the crap she has all over her floor and/or under her bed. This is the closest bedroom to the kitchen, where Junior Cat recently spent a few days examining the undersides of large appliances in an alert manner.

Mice fall squarely in the jurisdiction of The Man of the House, in my opinion. I believe daughter will find renewed energy to clean her damned room, in any event. I did attempt to get the mouser-ish cat in there to patrol, but she objects to being carried and deposited places; perhaps a more gentle approach?

esperanza said...

Ugh. Mice are not good.

kathy a. said...

Father/daughter trip to the hardware emporium to get mouse traps. We have mapped 3 locations to place them. Fortunately, Junior Cat has gained girth and lost any slithering abilities she once had, so these locations should work to keep her from trapping herself.

In other news, daughter cleared trash, did laundry, dragged donation items out of the zone.

esperanza said...

My advice for mouse traps: get the really cheap ones. When the mouse is caught, discard mouse AND trap in the outside trash bin. No need to touch the furry little creeps.

kathy a. said...

They got 2 cheap old fashioned, and 2 fancy-pants "you don't even need to see the dead mouse, the indicator will tell you if it's in there" ones. For both, part of our exclusive collection of plastic vegetable bags will encase the (thinking hopefully here) whole mess for disposal. We went with PB and a little nib of chocolate as the bait.
