Labor Day Special

Here's to those who work so hard, and to those before us who secured worker rights:  minimum wage, limits on hours, workplace safety, social security, protections against exploitation of children.  I'm probably missing some.  And while there is still progress to be made on several fronts -- like maintaining a minimum wage that is somewhere close to a living wage -- untold human misery has been alleviated by these kinds of protections.  It is also useful to remember that much of what we enjoy has been produced by the work of others; none of us goes it all alone, pioneer style.

We're having a fairly lazy weekend, although I did manage to clear the junk corner in my office, piled between a file cabinet and the bookcase.  It was like an archeological dig!  The plastic bubble packaging layer; the extra hanger layer; flat boxes; present wrapping; simple quilts I meant to donate; great-grandmother's linens, the ones left after everyone else chose; binders.  At the bottom was a box, and at the bottom of the box was a bunch of unused basic household stuff.  It's a mystery, but I suspect it came back home during a time my son was between places, since the mug belonged to him.  In any event, donations have been made, recycling has been done.  Also, progress in unloading some of the too-many books around here, with two bags delivered to the book exchange.

Daughter's first few days at the new job were good!  At a going away party for someone who retired, they also gave her a lovely orchid to commemorate her beginning.  That is so sweet.

A chef who now does BBQ has started setting up shop on weekends outside a local family-owned produce / etc. market.  Match made in heaven!  One can't eat BBQ all the time, but this is very very good.   And I love that his HS daughter cheerfully helps him at the stand.

I'm sure I'll have some whines later.  What's happening at your place?

first week of kindergarten = new germs = head cold for the esperanza household

Prize for first week of K! Passing the tissues and de-snifflers of choice.

First week of school here starting tomorrow. For once, both Teen Daughter and Nearly Teen Son are prepared. NTS is actually excited. TD starts a new school and will be earning college credit as a 16 year old. It's a program for students who do not adapt to traditional high school. If she screws this up. I want the posse though.

kathy a. said...

The posse is sending good vibes, Miranda! xoxo

kathy a. said...

Also, sounds like TD's program is great!

Passing the tissues to the esperanza household. Ugh: it's the first day of school here, and I hope Mr. Q doesn't bring another cold home. (We're all getting over one here.)

Miranda, I hope TD's program goes well. It sounds like a great idea.

AW: Very good friends of mine move to my city today! (Well, one of them flew out on Sunday, in advance of the first day of school, while the other drove the moving truck and will start the school year a day late.) Mr. Q is giddy because both of the friends will be teaching at his school.

QWP, real life friends are always good.

W: remember a few weeks ago, in the midst of Big Churchy Whines, I mentioned that the trackpad stopped working on my laptop? It's under warranty, so I called the customer service people today. After spending 45 minutes determining that I knew what I was talking about, she tells me I have to send it to the "repair depot." I will be without it around 2 weeks. Alas! Woe is me!

W: My dad is upset with my husband because my husband reacted stupidly to something stupid my dad did. But of course neither of them is talking directly to each other. GAHHHHHH. I do NOT want to be monkey in the middle. GROW UP. TALK TO EACH OTHER. (which I actually said to both of them)

kathy a. said...

QWP, yay for friends moving nearby! Wow, sounds like they'll have their hands full, unpacking and start of school.

Oh, esperanza. At least it is covered, but hard to lose your equipment for two weeks.

((( Anonymous ))) Good for you, resigning the middleman position. xoxo

AW: Breakfast with an old friend. So good to chat and laugh with somebody who already knows most of the backstories. Also, we talk books. This is pretty much the good life.

Hugs and tissues for everyone with sniffles and ick.

W: Blogger ate my comment from yesterday.

W: I am grumpy about computers this week. My laptop at home is doing strange and not-so-wonderful things. I'm thinking virus, though I don't know how that could have happened - I am uber protected. Then I get to work yesterday and THAT computer is acting up. Both seemed to go wonky after the latest wind@ws update, so I blame micr*soft.

Anywho, the work computer is working/functioning. Home computer, not so much.

AW: I get to see the Doc Who Helps My Head Pain on Monday. Not a moment too soon. It means a trip the Big City where there is a huge film festival on right now. I may spot a celeb or two!

kathy a. said...

Sue, phooey on the computer revolt. Hope the kinks work out. My computer is also running a little slow; wonder if it ate an update, too?

Yay about the head pain doc! Boo about the need to see him.

It is time to Get Serious Again about the current work albatross. Have had other stuff the past couple weeks, and it has been so *delightful* to avoid the Albatross Zone for a while.

Hugs to everybody, especially those dealing with BTS issues (BTS = Back to School) and computer woes.

I had a great morning. A friend of mine is working on the same 2015 project (different district, same goal), and we sat together today making our fundraising calls. It worked so well, we're making it a weekly thing!

kathy a. said...

Go, Liz!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That sounds like a great time, Liz!

Sympathies for all the computer woes. Mr. Q's computer has been acting up lately, too. He did something to fix it, and it's behaving itself for now, but I'm giving it since serious side eye. (The beginning of the school year, and weeks before our next paycheque is NOT the time to die, computer!)

W: tiiiiired. So is E. Everything has been in upheaval this week (our friends' move took over our house for a day, and we've been out a lot), and so the kid is sleeping poorly, which means I am too. She was already exhausted yesterday, and then construction woke her up mid-nap, and she couldn't get back to sleep. And, when one of us is tired and grouchy, we both are.

AW: the borderline-incompetent house builder hired an extremely competent project manager, who will have everything finished in this house by the end of the month, including things that he is redoing because they were done wrong first. (Fun fact: did you know that the finishing carpenters mismeasured every door frame in the house? No wonder all the doors stick badly in this basement suite!)

Sue said...

Go Liz!!!

Yay kathy for taking on the Albatross again. You can do it!

QWP - here's hoping for computer harmony and rest for the weary. Seriously, EVERY door frame? Posse is on the way, with this crazy new invention called a tape measure!

Whine of Zero Consequence and Much Silliness: You know the Canadian Coffee Shop found on every corner in Canada? Well, they have a new dark roast blend and I cannot decide if I like it. The fact that I'm sitting here thinking about it probably means I've come to the end of my productivity for the day.

Liz said...

Proud of myself. Every day I'm calling at least one person who's said "no" to donating to me before. All the rest are people who've either said "yes" or I've never asked.

Intestinal Fortitude, I has it. Now I need to sit on the pot awhile.

Sue said...

Wow Liz. You are indeed a political fundraising goddess. I break out in a sweat thinking about the cold calls, never mind the ones who have said "no" before.

Liz said...

Me too. But it builds character, right?

kathy a. said...

Go, Liz! People may say no for different reasons, including finances at that moment.

Problem: cousin just sent an e-vite to a family BBQ. He addressed me as "Kathy Mylastname Husband'slastname." I never use husband's last name. Ever, in 30 years. I told my cousin in an email, but now I'm worried that all these relatives will go change their address books.

This really bothers me, because my SIL is Kathy Husband'slastname. One of my own sibs did this to me last Christmas -- after 30 years, suddenly "forgot" that I have the exact same last name I've always had, the same one she has also. My aunt, sadly, always uses the wrong last name, even though every single return address I've ever sent includes MY REAL NAME, and I also introduce myself by MY REAL NAME every time I call her.

Liz said...

Kathy, I recommend talking with the cousin privately, and then sending out a reminder to the whole fireplacing family in a few weeks.

"Hey family, I'm just sending out this reminder that I've retained the last name of (your last name). It's important due to the fact that we are responsible for my SIL's bills and paperwork and her name is Kathy (husband's last name) and we must absolutely keep all our stuff separate.
I know it's confusing, but please be extra careful, as we are her guardians. All my best,"

kathy a. said...

Well, cousin has been alterted -- and he'll probably alert his wife and sibs. My sibs and kids are fully aware of where I stand. That leaves my cousin's mom, who is fabulous, but quite possibly not trainable on this issue. Maybe I over-reacted.

Wednesday Whining: where over-reacting is perfectly acceptable!
(I don't think you were--just saying that it would be a good place to do it)
:)
Nice to have a place like that!

It's so quiet here this week! Expect NL is not the only crazy-busy one.

Passing the chocolate.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

It is indeed a busy week! I'm very thankful to have a quiet moment right now, even though it means that my house is a disgusting mess.

Wish me luck, you guys: I'm going to attempt a ham and barley soup without a recipe.

kathy a. said...

Ham and barley = yum!

I'm torn between improvisation ideas -- quiche, or a potato gratin? Need to use leftover cooked ground beef. Want to use cheese. Leaning toward a gratin graced with the leftovers.

Yeah, it's probably good you don't eat here.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That all sounds wonderful to me! I'd love either quiche or potato gratin.

AW: Li'l E ate and enjoyed the soup! A minor miracle.

kathy a. said...

Nom. Gratin it is, side of broc. Mmmm.

Sue said...

Crazy busy indeed. Whew!

Mmmmm....yummy food suggestions.

W: Back to sermon-writing this week and feeling very rusty. Also, I need to do laundry so I can pack for my visit to the Big City.

AW: I love autumn. There is a crispness in the air that I find energizing.

Sorry, no awards for now. Been nursing a headached half the night and half the day. Maybe later.
