Autumnal equinox

Almost forgot about that, but here we are.  Catch your sunbeams while you can!

The church down the street has an annual Japanese bazaar, with music and food and kiddie games and crafts and plants.  Yesterday was the day; the smell of the BBQ and sound of the taiko drums are glorious!

The new little cat, Minerva, continues to enjoy the housecat life, becoming a little braver and funnier each day.  Her big quirk is that she is scratching the thin fabric under the couch, so it hangs down in a ragged fashion -- but that is much better as a bad habit than shredding the visible parts of the couch, don't you think?

After 18 years in this house, my beloved and I finally agreed on colors for repainting the exterior!    Which will happen after the window extravaganza; we always figured there was no sense repainting when those windows have got to go, but things kept coming up, as they do.  I have a feeling he will want to do the scraping and painting himself, which is OK because he is running out of yard projects -- and an idle beloved will scour the home improvement supply store until he settles on something like a home jackhammer to work on the cracked driveway.

How are things in your neighborhood?

I swear to dog that I just got a solicitation call on the phone that I use for my work, and the caller said she wanted to speak to "the man of the house." How can anyone even DO that??

esperanza said...

I've been asked if I was "the lady of the house" before. I almost barfed on them (it was in person, at the front door). Instead, I icily replied, "Can I *help* you?"

My inner icy let's-talk-business and you-aren't-getting-ours bitch really kicks in, at moments like those.

AW: the one egg omlette, spread thin in the pan and topped with cheese + whatever; perfect for putting on a slice of toast. I should probably add more veggies, but this IS the perfect quick hot meal.

AW: Sweet appeared to *enjoy* her homework today. Already knows this week's sight words.

W: I guess that will give us time to work on last week's stumper: "is"

kathy a. said...

Yay, homework! Go, Sweet! You seriously can't guess what will be a stumper, but please know -- it doesn't last.

Had to seriously bite my tongue this morning from snapping Tattle Pants Coworker's head off. I will have to content myself with knowing that I did not stoop to her level, and that one day, karma will catch up with her. I would be lying if I said that I didn't hope said karma is fast and brutal.

Got word that Offsping will be coming home for a long weekend the weekend right after my birthday. Looking very forward to that, but hoping the 16+ hours in the car (round trip) will not wear her out.

Kathy a., that whole "man of the house" crap in this day and age is ridiculous. Next time, you should say "uh...I dunno! I'm too frail and hysterical to answer questions!"

kathy a. said...

KLee, good on you for not going there with Ms. Tattlepants. xoxo

I do my best to sound scary and all about business, when I end up on the line with idiots. They'll just call back if I sound like someone else might answer sometime.

Daughter got going late. Then she started to make herself a sandwich -- with UNCOOKED turkey bacon. Good thing I caught her. I honestly am pretty obsessive about food safety, so not sure how this happened.

esperanza said...

Ew! I'm imagining biting into the sandwich...I can't even. Yuck. My grandfather, in the middle stages of Alzheimer's, ate a raw sausage ball one time. ~shudder~

kathy a. said...

I think the problem is that uncooked turkey bacon looks a lot like ham. I had cut the pieces in half and cooked some, so the rest were Just The Right Size for bread. Must buy ham; must never again risk turkey bacon, which btw my husband says is an abomination even if it is organic.

esperanza said...

Your husband speaks the truth, though mine claims to like it.

Liz said...

Turkey bacon is an abomination. Kosher, but still an abomination.

kathy a. said...

TB is in the trash. Regulation (organic) ham has been acquired.

Bleah, feeling under the weather, and I didn't even eat any raw turkey bacon. Crock pot is at work on something like chicken noodle soup -- rough plan is to toss in the noodles at the end.

kathy a. said...

I tend to look at recipes after I do the crockpot thing -- so I discovered that carrots are apparently required, and that was added. The couple pieces of cooked chicken will have to do. Broth, little spices, celery, leftover veg for some heft. That should work, right? Because I swear there are 8,000 online recipes, and they can't all be right.

esperanza said...

I believe a recipe for soup is unnecessary. It will be fine, I'm sure.

Liz Miller said...

Chicken soup: general recipe. Chicken or other fowl. Onions and other veggies. Liquid to cover. Add noodles or barley if you wanna

kathy a. said...

It smells pretty good. Noodles will go in the last 1/2 hour, that should do it.

I opened the back patio door for air, the dog went into the family room (separated from the kitchen by a 1/2 door), and Minnie the New Cat made an amazing leap over the 1/2 door! Got the patio door closed before an escape. She and the dog are presumably getting to know one another. Minnie has considerable skills in the fierce department, but she is also good at hiding under all the stuff my beloved keeps in there.

kathy a. said...

If a person must take bets, the dog is in trouble. Even though I currently call teh family room "the dog room."

KLee said...

I tend to make things like stews and roasts in my crockpot, though I do have a recent recipe for a faux Olive Garden Pasta Fagioli for the crockpot, and boy --was it good!

I usually do chicken and dumplings in my stockpot....damn. Now, I want chicken and dumplings! :)

esperanza said...

oooh, now I want chicken and dumplings too!

I am in general crockpot impaired. I cook beans in it. Otherwise, I use the stove.

Liz said...

I made broiled butter chicken today, enough for 20 servings. Didn't even get a nibble...it was for a church thing. Our church cooked and served restaurant meals for food insecure folks living in this, one of the wealthiest counties in the country.

kathy a. said...

Go, Liz.

kathy a. said...

L'shanah Tovah, y'all!

Liz, how many meals did your church provide altogether? Such a lovely idea. (As an aside, I just cannot understand people who want to cut the food security nets. People need to eat. Every.Day. WIC benefits, food stamps, school lunches -- those all keep people alive.)

4 a.m., Minnie jumped up by my head, stared into my eyes, then decided that she was too close to the monster. The End.

Ugh. I've made two comments this week but neither is here.

Not much to say except I was hit with the Crud and missed a day of work. Feeling better today but still not great.

Tomorrow I'm off to a chunky meeting four hours west of here.

Hugs pixies - I'll check in next week when I get back.

kathy a. said...

Crud AND 4 hour drive to chunky? No fair.

Liz said...

The minimum we signed up for as a church were 160 meals. It ended up being more cooked.

kathy a. said...

That is WONDERFUL! My bet would be, no leftovers. xoxo

1. Is it too hard to put the measuring cup for the rice cooker back where it was? The place it has been kept for 15 years?

2. Thermal go-cups that shouldn't go in the washer -- or those china coffee cups with gold embellishment -- responsibility of the using party, or the Dish Fairy?

3. If an otherwise responsible young adult person leaves the front bathroom of a shared home a disgusting mess, what is an appropriate "incentive"?

4. Maybe it's time to bake cookies. Whatcha think?

esperanza said...

4. No! That makes more dirty dishes!

AW: tetanus shot ouchie finally going away
W: after 60+ hours. Sheesh.
W: also, non-productive cough is making me hoarse. And grumpy.

AW: Sweet got a purple smiley face on her behavior chart yesterday. She was obviously proud of it, but as it was different from the weeks of green smiley faces, I wasn't sure what to make of it. But, hey, it was smiling and not frowning, so I figured it was good. Her teacher tells me this morning that a purple smiley face means she was "Fantastic" all day long, and that she (the teacher) has only bestowed 3-4 purple smileys so far this year. So proud of Sweet. She is rocking kindergarten.

W: If only she could figure out numbers. My fault partially. We've concentrated so much on speech and reading, and I guess I thought numbers would come easily to her because she's kind of a mechanically minded, engineer-y sort of girl, that we haven't worked on them much. Always something.

kathy a. said...

Woot woot wooooot! FANTASTIC!!! That's what we like to hear. :)

Where is Sweet with numbers? You can do counting games in everyday life. She'll pick it up.

esperanza said...

She is memorizing them, but not getting the system, if you will. I.e., if there is a 1 at the front, it is a "teen" (11 & 12, you are not helping me here); if there is a 2, it is a "twenty"-whatever. She's doing a lot more work than necessary, I guess. I'm sure it will click at some point, I'm just surprised that the reading bit is coming along more easily than the numbers.

AW: also, SO THANKFUL I am not her (only) teacher.

kathy a. said...

Everybody learns at different paces. My kids had a better time when they could physically count things; and then learn the teens, twenties, etc. -- it helped to see the volume as the numbers went up. I think. :)

Sue said...

Hi again pixies!!

I'm feeling much less crud-like this morning - thank goodness, as that could have made for a miserable drive today.

I am ready for the weekend and I'm not the driver this time around - so, yay. Still, chunky meetings are a unique form of torture. I would MUCH rather be making meals for food insecure folks like Liz's church does.

Anywho, catch ya later pixies.

kathy a. said...

Have a good trip, Sue. Here, let's tuck a cluestick in the bag, just in case.... ;)

Power went out for 3 hours this morning. But joy of joys, it is back!

*cheering wildly for Sweet*

Whiney whines: Mr. Q leaves for a canoe trip WAY up north, early tomorrow morning, and I will be solo parenting with a child who can't handle to be away fun Beloved Daddy until very late Monday night. And he has to spend this evening prepping for his sub, because his school day was taken up with dealing with Major Behavioral Issues. We're both feeling whiney now.

Old Skool: you guys, with no encouragement all, and with minimal watching of his show, Li'l E has become obsessed with Elmo.

re: numbers-- I recommend games--like ones where you have to roll dice and count spaces. Or Yahtzee. Really good for counting the dots on dice. Or dominoes maybe....

NL! great ideas! How are you?

QWP -- you and E can do this! Especially with Elmo! xoxo (Should we send chocolate, or go straight for the vodka and earplugs?) (I am kidding.)

Well, SIL is not doing great, and so there has been a lot of talking and searching about sending her to another place. Which is pretty depressing, except [a] we have a possible other place identified (but there's a waitlist and a bunch of hoops), and [b] in touch with the Big Hospital people about this development, and they have contacts, and [c] someone else might know people who might know how to smooth the way into the place, and so -- knock wood. Whining might work? xoxo

AW: visit and lunch with my dad's cousin!

With bonus albums of old family photos -- and she actually has a porcelain bowl painted in the late 1800's by my great-grandmother and her sister, apparently half and half. That great-grandmother was independent and vivid until 90; she lived near us and babysat me when I was little. Wow.

W: Neighbor Boy may have broken his wrist falling off a swing. Spent morning in the ER but because of the growth plates, they can't tell for sure. So, treating as broken until we can see a hand specialist orthopedic surgeon.

W: If there is ever anyplace to reinforce to a kid the importance of good choices in life (eg. not taking drugs, not drinking to excess, ) it was the ER we were in this morning. I think he received that message loud and clear by the sounds we heard all around us during our almost 4 hours of being back in the ER.

old skool whine: I have a very very massive canker sore inside my bottom lip, which is so swollen that I continue to bite it over...and over....

W: grading

aw: um....
nice weather

w: see grading, above

I have more but that's more than enough.

kathy a. said...

((( NL ))) Hope NB is ok.

Yep, ER's can be learning opportunities, I guess, but they aren't exactly the way you'd like to present the lessons... xoxo

Awards -- not yet, but probably later. So all w/aw's welcome still.

esperanza said...

Oh, I hope NB is ok.

W, on behalf of Sweet: sick for her birthday party. No fever, but snot and fatigue. Snot running down her throat = yucky tummy. She didn't even eat supper or cake and was asking to go to bed. Poor thing.

AW, on behalf of me: I took my first pottery (wheel-throwing) class today. So fun. I've been wanting to do this for a long time and just decided to go for it, inconvenient scheduling though it may be. It's an 8 week session.

Got a text (a FREAKING text!) from one of my actors on Thursday that there was "a slight chance" that she might not make it to tonight's performance because her aunt was ill. At first, she said she could leave after the show, but she wanted to know how I felt about it. Apparently, she got pissed when I said I wanted her to stay for the show, and she changed her tune totally and all of a sudden, it was --I'm not coming. So, she bailed on the show completely but she was "really upset about it". She said she was concerned that this would change her chances of being cast in the future...

You're damn skippy it changes your chances! YOU WALKED OUT ON A PERFORMANCE!!! Why in hell would I ever hire you again? So beyond pissed.

Liz said...

KLee, that sucks so badly. OMG!

Yay, esperanza!!

Oh, KLee. What a jerk!

My friends, I'm flaking on awards. Chocolate mousse for all!

I want to thank Sue and Kathy for helping through a Feminist Hulk rage last night. I was all like ARGGGHHH SMASH!!! And they were all like ARGGGHHH SMASH!!! too, and cheered me up no end, and made me feel sane again.

Thank you both. You are my anti-whine.

Glad to raise our cluesticks in solidarity, Liz!

Esperanza, missed your pottery a/w! How fun.
