Winter Whining

Good morning pixies!

We finally have winter in our part of the world. There is a light snow this morning, making my little corner of the world look quite beautiful.

What's new in your world?

The Baboos and I got up early (well, almost on time for school) and went out to breakfast. This was an attempt to ease us back into the school schedule, so that tomorrow morning would not be such a rude awakening, for Mini especially, who is clearly a night owl. I am fried already, and it's only 10:30. I need a nap.

kathy a. said...

Snow!

We're looking at possibly a full week of rain! Being in drought for a few years definitely makes one more appreciative when the rain finally comes. (Except the dog; she hates the rain 100%, and it is even worse when Her Man goes back to work after a long weekend.)

kathy a. said...

Good thinking about the breakfast treat, Esperanza! Wishing you the best in getting through this day.

esperanza said...

Not to mention that Mini has figured out how to work the clock radio and is listening to Czech-German polka music, very loudly. (Sadly, that is our only local radio station).

kathy a. said...

ELEVATED RISK OF MULLET! Polka music should be an automatic winner.

kathy a. said...

W of a dilly-dallier: Every 3 years I have to report that mandatory continuing education requirements have been met. And I have gotten dozens if not hundreds of solicitations from providers of those credits. But have I added up what I have and what I need? No, I have not; and the deadline is coming up.

The true gist of one ad received today: Get your credits at the gym, standing in line, taking a shower, whatever! All you need to do is have the video running while you do your thing! Oy.

Liz Miller said...

Shoot, Kathy! I should've gotten Mr Spock's CLE registered in CA.

Sue said...

Polka music for the win!

esperanza said...

The polka bit is a very interesting cultural interchange, actually. The Czech and German (also other assorted Slovaks, Bohemians, and Moravians) immigrants in the 1800s brought their accordions and polka music with them. This still plays at dances and on the radio. Mexican immigrants, particularly from the northern reaches of Mexico, brought very polka-sounding music (norteno, if you're really that interested) and *their* accordions. Skimming through the radio, it's sort of inescapable. And, if you are not of either one of those extractions, kind of annoying.

We have made it to lunchtime. New library books have been borrowed. Caffeine (for me, duh) has been procured. Grilled cheese sandwiches have been consumed. Here we go.

kathy a. said...

Liz, I'm pretty sure these bottom-dweller CLE providers advertise nationally. (Well, some are reputable. But they're all looking for that influx of desperate cash.)

I went to 2 weekend-long conferences during my reporting period, so I have a ton of hours. There are some specific requirements, like ethics and elimination of bias -- and think I still need those. (Even though those topics are part of the fabric of other topics...)

Very interesting polka history, Esperanza! Doesn't make it less annoying....

kathy a. said...

GAH! 6 hours of mandatory special items! No Downton Abbey for me!

kathy a. said...

I swear I am listening to this pathetically boring and basic lecture on something I know very well. I might need to start counting all the "um's" and wrongly spoken words, because this guy sucks.

esperanza said...

...you could play polka music in the background...

esperanza said...

Here's a local favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfE3gjHBf_s

kathy a. said...

Now I'm on to when bias turns to bullying -- much better! Women. Sports. Cultural changes. But I'll catch the polka soon! :)

kathy a. said...

The bullying thing -- omg. The subtitle is dealing with high-conflict people. And it is so speaking to some of the personal issues in my family life.

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, you really have to admire a band that includes a tuba, an accordion, a percussion instrument involving a household broom, and a conductor who uses a toilet plunger! Everybody should watch!

esperanza said...

I'm telling you, it's a cultural phenomenon!

esperanza said...

...I would also imagine that copious amounts of beer were involved. Shiner is the site of the brewery that makes Shiner beer (not available nationwide, so you may not know it.)

kathy a. said...

I'm thinking that beer helps with the broom section of the band [at a minimum], and possibly the audience. Just guessing. Also impressed with the several saxophones.

As much as I'd rather watch polka, think I'd better check another hour of lecture off the list. I'm thinking one decent lecture is all I'ma getting. Sigh.

Sue said...

I know way more about accordions than I did this morning.

:)

W: Really, really ugly scene with Mini screaming at the table, throughout her shower, and into her room.

AW: Just as I suspected, here it is 6 PM and she is already sound asleep. Late nights catching up with her.

AW: Maybe I can get started on the eleventy hundred things I put off until this week.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

This day, you guys.

1.) E had three times outs for hitting me. (And was downright grouchy all day. On the way home from the new house, she was quietly practising angry things to say.)
2.) We got to the house to meet the furnace guy (who was there to do an estimate), and the thermostat battery had died in the night. It was 42F in the house, and I had to tear apart the place, looking for AA batteries that had already made the move. (Found some in the remote control for Mr. Q's flying Millennium Falcon.) It took until 2pm for the house to get to the right temperature.
3.) Every technician was late today, because for some reason I gave everyone my home phone number instead of my cell. And the landline doesn't transfer until Saturday. So, everyone kept thinking we weren't home.
4.) The delay meant we couldn't go home for naptime.
5.) My credit card company wigged out about me paying for sewer service using the rooter guy's payment app, and declined the payment, because they thought my card was stolen. (Thankfully he also took cheques.)
6.) Our furnace installation is going to be more complicated than the guy expected, and it's going to cost am extra $400.
7.) I was dumb and forgot that the sewer guys were working, and flushed the toilet, and got to clean up a bit of backflow before I went home.
8.) I am tired. I'm still recovering from my ear infection, and there's no room or time for that.

AW: we got a cheque from our lawyer, because it turned out that we overpaid the sellers.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Today's polka conversation brought me so much joy, you guys.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Also? The more I work in this house, the less I like the seller. (And I already thought he was a jerk, as a result of the negotiating process, and what bits I knew about him as CEO the health region.) I was going over paperwork today and realised: so, he bought this house in 2012, and since then rented out the house, while putting nothing into care for the house. The roots haven't been cleared out of the sewers since then. There's one burnt out burner on the stove, that he never replaced. There are three broken window panes. The furnace filter hasn't even been replaced, and he didn't clear out the leaves from the gutters before putting the house on RCS market! There's a wasp nest in the awning, and a lot of plumbing needed repairs. It's all stuff we can do, but can you imagine renting from the guy?

Queen of West Procrastination said...

The, not RCS. My phone made an odd decision for me!

kathy a. said...

I'm kinda thinking QWP wins the week already, what with the thermostat, and meltdowns, and the bank calling a fraud alert, and no batteries, and the sewage problem that was. Etc.

Know this doesn't win any bonus point with a current parent in the situation, but "practicing angry things to say" is kind of awesome for a preschooler. Just sayin. I'd still borrow her if she was closer.

kathy a. said...

Also, Posse Callout for the egregious seller.

kathy a. said...

And Esperanza! SCHOOL TOMORROW! xoxo

esperanza said...

QWP wins the week, because if polka was the bright spot in your day, you're having a terrible day.

Sweet "cussed" me out one day, using all the forbidden words. She stood with her hands on her hips and said, "Stupid! Butt! Hate!"

Liz Miller said...

Kathy, I meant MS teaches a CLE, it's good for credit in MO and VA.Sorry about you having to catch up on it all. He takes those 6 hour blockbuster things too.

(((QWP)))

kathy a. said...

Well. And from Sweet? I think you get a medal just for hearing that and not busting out laughing. xoxo

Liz, no problemo. It's these specialized hours that I need, and boy howdy. If the rest of the ethics pieces are as wonderful as the first, I'll either drift gently off to sleep or have dreams about what-all they are missing. Maybe both!

kathy a. said...

Just kill me now. Ethics of "cloud computing," which begins with somebody (who might actually be petrified) trying to explain servers and the internet and malware and that wi-fi thing.

esperanza said...

oh, kathy a, this sounds worse than defensive driving online.

Re: Sweet's "cussing," oh, I did bust out laughing. I had to go to the other room. Hilarious.

W: Mini woke up at 9, thought it was morning.

kathy a. said...

This guy just suggested finding out if Mc@f33 thinks things are safe. And excuse me, but I don't trust that particular anti-virus thingy. Seeing how the founder ran off to another place, and also it is an extremely annoying program that has crashed my own computer.

esperanza said...

AW: I think Mini is back asleep.

kathy a. said...

And may Mini rest well and through the entire night.

kathy a. said...

OK, so this ethics presentation is pretty interesting. This hard-charging trial guy has told a lot of stories, advocated lowering stress, belly breathing, good values, balance in lives, work on relationships. Belly breathing!

Liz Miller said...

Oh Esperanza, that cute cussing can be the death of a parent. Glad mini went back to sleep.

Kathy, I am glad that VA requires you report your CLE hours annually, I'd lose my shit at MS if he had to take 6 ethics hours at once.

But that belly breathing one sounds good

esperanza said...

Liz, I'm actually quite impressed that you and Mr. S can work from home, at the same time, together. I would lose my shit approximately every 25 minutes if that were the case here. And no word from your interview? :(

Sue said...

Catching up from yesterday.... QWP wins for the week, no question. Ugh. So many hugs and lots of love. And the posse is enroute for the seller. When said posse arrives at his house, they will cuss, likely using words a bit more harsh than Sweet's. :)

Also, belly breathing for one and all. It never fails to calm.

kathy a. said...

Managed to get it all done yesterday. Besides the belly breathing guy, the one I liked best involved dealing with highly confrontational people. That was the only one of the six that was taught by a woman, which is somewhat surprising nowadays.

Daughter's back to work today. Finally. Between her and her dad, I've only had 3 days alone in the past 2 weeks.

kathy a. said...

Proposing kudos for our only president, who is doing what he can about folks getting killed by guns.

On the book of visages, there is a page called Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian. She opines: "If you find yourself mocking anyone who cries over murdered children, it's Jesus's way of letting you know you're a sociopath."

Sue said...

I like that kathy!

kathy a. said...

My congressional rep just bravely wrote of his own father's suicide by gun, and how he supports progress on this issue. Starting to have a little hope.

esperanza said...

AW: Glorious, glorious day by myself. In the past 18 days, I had a total of 8 hours without Baboos' presence. Whew.

W: Y'all, some of these applications for this Albatross position are terrible. Really, really, terrible. If a question asks you about your weaknesses, don't answer it with a weakness! Especially one that is a specific liability in the very position for which you are applying! ("I have a hard time handling strong personalities, especially ones in opposition." That is at least half of the job).

Anonymous said...

Yay for gun control progress.
We just had some training at school where we (as teachers-- not yet with students) had to figure out how we would barricade our classroom if the need arises. This is stressful to think about and makes me want to cry, and yet.... we are preparing-- because the lives of young ones may depend on us having prepared.
What a world.

sigh

--Neighbor Lady

p.s. only scanned quickly, as I am swamped with new units, etc.etc, yadda yadda, same-old sameold. Close to a 12 hour day today. am tired

BUT, hang in there QWP-- you will make it!!!!!!!

kathy a. said...

((( NL ))) Oy, that really sounds so stressful. xoxo

Esperanza, all I can say is that some applications go straight to the "over my dead body" category. (Although I have a little sympathy for the "handling strong personalities" one. Does the applicant not really understand the job?)

esperanza said...

We have too many of the "dead body" category. And no, she doesn't understand the job.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I hope an appropriate applies, esperanza!

Cheering for positive changes in gun laws. Such reasonable and (to me) small changes, and the other side makes it sound like the end of the world!

AW: we had a day at home yesterday, and another one today. I'm packing while I'm here, but I'm making sure to keep it from being overwhelming while E is awake. And it's working. We had a really good day yesterday, and so far so good today.

Although E would like to whine that she would like the move to be over with already. This morning, she asked for a toy, and before I could respond, she said, "I know, I know. It's at the new house." (It was actually right behind her, and so that ended happily.)

Furnace installation today! Cross all appendages that it goes smoothly, and that they don't need me to go over there at all! (Mr. Q is letting them in, since they arrive before school starts, and our house is only a block and a half away. And he got our keypad deadbolt set up last night, with a temporary code for today's workers.)

Sue said...

(((NL)))) That sounds surreal to me. I can't begin to imagine a barricade drill, with teachers or students.

esperanza, just ugh. No, she doesn't understand the job. I hope some applications show up that are not of the "dead body" type.

QWP - you can do this. Keep your eye on the finish line and think of how great it will be to spend that first night in your own home!! I hope all goes well with the furnace today.

Liz Miller said...

Kathy, I can work in the same house (actually in the same room) with MS, because we have a 2700 square foot house with lots of separate space and I can get time to myself when I need it. Also, we are not big talkers when we are working on stuff.

Esperanza, ugh. Sorry about the horrible applicants.

NL, many hugs. I sincerely don't get why we think it's easier to make everyone do these drills than to just fireplacing confiscate all the fireplacing guns, mine included.

QWP, the end is in sight!!!

I'm probably going to find out if I got the job this week.

Mr Spock's iPh0ne died yesterday, due to App1e thinking he's not allowed to have his particular SIM card in his particular unit on this particular island. Friend of ours had the same problem on Sunday. Can't be fixed until we are back on the mainland. His calls are being forwarded to my phone, but how long will my phone last?

kathy a. said...

What's this about an island?

kathy a. said...

My daughter wants to have a poster framed for her birthday, so I finally went to the local frame shop yesterday. The owner's great! There is a store dog; there is a little library outside; a neighbor stopped by with a plate of baked goods while I was there. She told me all about how the Masonic Temple nearby was sold, and the new owners are offering fencing lessons for kids; so the coffee shop and gift shop across the street are going to extend their hours, hoping to pick up the mom/dad business. Love my little town!

I am on vacation in Rincon, Puerto Rico. My mom and stepdad invited us. Me, MS, MM, my sister, her husband, and their two (college-age) kids. It's beyond wonderful

kathy a. said...

Woot, Liz! Now the bathing suit news clicks right into place! Hope you have a wonderful time.

esperanza said...

Oooh, that sounds great Liz (I mean the island not the phone issues).

W: World's longest meeting which accomplished nothing. Well, maybe not nothing. The chair resigned. The new chairperson might be better. But still. Three hours of nothing.

kathy a. said...

There have been times when the person in charge resigning was a good thing. Still, 3 hours....

esperanza said...

Oh, it's a very good thing. He's completely ineffective and unenthusiastic and done. He should have resigned last time, then maybe we could have gotten something done today.

Liz Miller said...

Ugh. So sorry

Queen of West Procrastination said...

That sounds like a terrible meeting, esperanza. Good riddance to the former chair.

W: my ears are worse again, and I only have one dose of my antibiotic left. Back to the doctor tomorrow. Because there's clearly time for that this week.

AW: the furnace is in, and it's lovely. Many people are coming to help us move on Saturday, and both my family and some church people (including one who is in her 90s!) are coming to help me unpack the kitchen and do other things around the new house tomorrow morning. And my grandpa wants me to keep an eye on the mail, because he had my uncle help him send us a housewarming present.

I'm well loved.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Liz! I hope you're having a wonderful vacation, and I hope the phone situation is fixed soon.

kathy a. said...

Oh, QWP! Such lovely people. And I hope your ear clears up. xoxo

Sue said...

Yay Liz!!!! It sounds like a lovely vacay!!

esperanza - three hours of meeting with negligible results. Yup, that's a chunky meeting - no question.

QWP - I hope the ears clear up quickly with the next round of treatment. It's so great that you've got help lined up for the weekend. And a present from grandpa - that's wonderful!

AW: Our wonderful choir director gave me the most delightful slippers for Christmas. They are polar fleece with fuzzy lining and non-slippy thingys on the bottom. My office is cold this morning, so I have fuzzy slippers on.

kathy a. said...

Warm fuzzy slippers! That sounds very lovely, Sue.

Had an all-day tussle (off and on) with the dog yesterday -- my sweetie left her loose in the house; she was upset about the rain; when I finally got her off the bed, she lasted about 30 seconds outside before crying her doggie eyes out at a high volume. Today, she had her outside break and is now corralled in the dog room (family room) -- there is a half door, so she's not exactly banished, but she can't run around where she pleases, either.

Dog people must think me really cranky. She's a nice dog; but I never ever agreed to have a free-range house dog -- a practice that escalated during the recent Dad Vacation Days. I have allergies. Do not care for mud, either. This dog feels the cat kibble is her personal snack buffet.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Kathy, I understand so much. I love dogs a lot. But I am learning that I love to have a dog-free home (for all the reasons you listed, except substitute "cat kibble" with "toddler snacks").

AW: my ears are clearing up, and so I didn't feel the need to go to the doctor today. And we got A LOT done at the house.

Of course, there was more work than I expected, because my dad discovered had the wiring was done incorrectly, when it was upgraded in 2009, but we had fun solving the wiring mysteries.

kathy a. said...

Go, Dad, for discovering the wiring issue!

It turns out the crystal on my watch acts just like a laser pointer, in the right light; so junior cat is mighty amused with chasing the magic light.

W: Albatross #2 is getting bigger and more unwieldy.

W: I am tired.

W: Mini is not.

kathy a. said...

Uck on the albatross. Need any cluesticking?

Sending the magic sleep wand for Mini.

My son is here -- picking up his packages of fishing equipment, eating leftovers, watching TV. All is well when this happens every so often.

Liz Miller said...

Muffin Man is sleeping at the main house tonight (with grandma, grandpa, auntie, uncle, and two college-age cousins)! I'm going to celebrate by going to sleep right. Now.

esperanza said...

You could send a cluestick to the applicant who sent me a hard copy of her resume, in a format from about 5 years ago (it's a specific form we have to use). That means I have to scan it and then email it to my fellow albatross wranglers. This does not predispose me to think kindly of you, applicant.

Sleep well, Liz

kathy a. said...

One person in the Posse thinks an applicant could go scan that her own self. (Although someone without scanning capabilities, such as me, would have to trot down to the copy center. Which doesn't seem too much to ask under the circumstances. IMO.)

esperanza said...

She could darn well fill it in online her own self. If the rest of us can figure out how to use Dr0pb0x, she can fill in a form.

kathy a. said...

Um, yeah.

W of bad motherhood: Daughter was born Jan. 8, 27 years ago, in Japan. Due to time zones, that means she was already born by now. And she had to remind me! Which means she does not have to hear the riveting birth story this year, but honestly, maybe I'm slipping.

Anonymous said...

Kathy-- I think you would only be slipping if you currently lived in Japan but forgot about the birthday!
xoxoxo ;) just call it jet lag
--Neighbor Lady

Sue said...

Sorry about the albatross troubles esperanza. Ugh. An online form is much easier to fill out than a hard copy. If the applicant thinks her application will "stand out" in a different format, she's right - but not in a good way.

Happy birthday to your daughter kathy a!

I hope you're having a lovely restful time, Liz!

Sue said...

Keep up the good work QWP!! You're in the home stretch (see what I did there?)

kathy a. said...

Liz, hope you had a blissful night! A multigenerational family trip sounds so glorious.

Go, QWP! Almost there!!

Hmph, about the online form not filled. Suppose it is possible there still are folks who are intimidated by things digital, but that seems like a problem for many jobs...

It's the funniest thing -- my sibs all heard about daughter's birth on the 7th, and it took about 20 years to set them straight on the fact that she's listed as Jan. 8, officially.

Today, I shall bake something chocolate. And buy more ice cream, and whipped cream. Because she has always been a Bring On The Chocolate kind of girl. At her second birthday, I was busy passing out cake, and she just took a fork to the rest of the cake!

Liz Miller said...

It's even a terrific trip except for the fact that, while my family of origin and my husband are all native English speakers, I still have to translate them all to each other, and quite frankly it's hard when my mom is talking utter bullshit and is unwilling to just ignore my husband when he bucks the trend.

kathy a. said...

Oy, Liz.

esperanza said...

Ugh, Liz. I know what you mean.

W: exhausted. Albatross #2 meeting was really, really good and productive. It was worth the time we spent early on to build trust with each other, because it paid off today. But it was a lot of hard work, and I'm worn out. Another meeting tomorrow. Yes, this week had three meetings. No, I do not have an actual paying job. Yeah.

Liz Miller said...

(((Esperanza))) not getting paid for all the work you do is not okay.

Things are better here.

Sue said...

Glad things have improved Liz.

Oy, esperanza. I wish there was a way to pay ministry personnel for such hard work. I'm glad the Albatross is being tamed at least, but that's a lot of meetings. :(

kathy a. said...

That's a lot of meetings... Glad you're making progress, anyway.

The boys are going fishing. Son got dad a fishing license, and they need to test son's new equipment.

kathy a. said...

It turns out that when The Men come home after 6 hours, smelling like fish and returning only with disgusting leftover bait [placed in my freezer!], the dog is just happy as a clam. And the son is in the garage, fixing something that went wrong on his new reel. Apparently this is what fishing is all about. At least I didn't get any fish guts, that's all I can say.

esperanza said...

Reasons I don't like fishing: bait. Waiting. Boring. Fish guts.

W: So so tired. My monkey brain wouldn't shut up last night (rehashing the meeting), and I didn't really get much rest.

AW: went to glaze my pottery pieces today. So much better than sitting on my butt in meetings.

kathy a. said...

Glazing pottery is WAY better than sit-on-butt meetings! We'll need photos!

It's hard to settle down after something intense. Monkey brain is a good description.

esperanza said...

I'll post pictures after it gets fired. I'm not sure when that will be.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

AW: I'm sitting in my own living room, in my own house. And everything looks very nice, and went well today.

W: the house quirks and expenses keep cropping up. The front blinds don't cover the bottom few inches of the windows, and so I feel like the neighbourhood is watching me watch TV. The back storm door is broken. Every door is very old, and needs shaving and sanding (but it would be nice to replace them). Drafts everywhere, because it is a cold night.

AW: I'm glad I have a high efficiency furnace, because I have cranked up the heat tonight.

Yay!!!! for new houses and birthday celebrations! and vacations!
(but not for bait in the freezer and awful meetings-- yuck)

:) Neighbor Lady

AW : had a lovely lovely shopping outing with teen daughter yesterday, followed by girls night movie and take out food (while daddy and son had boys night take out and different movie in a different room!) :)

also, p.s. QWP, our last house had the exact same problem with blind length. We did a temporary fix of a blanket rolled up and put on the sill. That temporary fix lasted...oh....7 years or so. Haha! When we finally fixed it, we wondered why it had taken us so long, but then again, life happens!...... I won't even get into our duct tape and dryer vent....that was truly pathetic. :)

Seriously, congrats on the new house!!!!!

kathy a. said...

What a lovely day for the Neighbor family, NL!

We would probably do the blanket fix if this was an issue at our house! (Actually, we used sheets for a while in the front window of our new house, after we made the mistake of trying to wash the drapes and having them disintegrate.)

A quick and cheap, slightly less tacky temporary solution might be to get tension rods that fit each sector of window, and do half or full lightweight curtains that go all the way down -- you can even do the edges / hem / pocket for the rod to go through with iron-on hem tape [cutting it a bit wider than the space to allow for some gathering on the rod]. This was my method for quite a few windows over the years!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Would you believe that the window has no sills? But I've found a replacement blind that's very affordable, and so hopefully we can replace it soon. But I just rigged up a rolled fabric solution in E's bedroom: we just got be blinds for her room (the original blinds fell on Mr. Q!), and hung a curtain, but when we put her down for her nap, bright light was shining above the blind, and with the yellow walls and white ceiling, it was too bright in her room for sleeping. (And my kid won't sleep if it's too bright.) I investigated, and discovered that I could tuck rolled-up fabric on top of the blind, behind the curtain rod, and that takes care of it! This wouldn't have been a problem in a window with sills.

W: no nap, and exhausted kid. She has cried about EVERYTHING this afternoon.

NL, that sounds like an excellent night!

Have a wonderful birthday celebration, Kathy!

I've been whining about my house a lot, and I have to say: it's really, really nice to move from a small basement suite into a large-ish house. (Okay, large for me. Over 1100 sqft, which means it's the largest home of my life.) We still have a bunch of stuff left to unpack, but it feels like we're all moved in, because we have so much room.

What a nice day, in spite of the afternoon of grumpy child. Mr. Q managed E, and I slowly worked on unpacking my office, and sorting toys.

I'm so happy.

esperanza said...

QWP, I'm swooning at the thought of "my office."

AW: I finally slept pretty well last night and felt much more rested today.

W: I tallied up the hours I spent working (meetings, preparation for meetings, followup to meetings, sermon preparation, sermon preaching) as well as traveling to all those meetings, and it was 25. I got paid for the sermon part.

W: the larger whine in all that is that I had been seriously considering searching around for something part-time. But given how exhausted I was last week, and how little I got done on the homefront, I just don't know if that would be feasible. I know that I would get used to it, to some extent.

AW: I rested a bit this afternoon and then got a ton of stuff done around the house, because it felt so good to do something other than sit on my butt in a meeting.

esperanza said...

And now I'm going to comment again, just so we can have 100 comments. :)

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, if a p/t job moves you, go for it. Having some income all your own, doing something productive that isn't just for your own household, that means something.

QWP, so glad you love your house! And yes, more space than you have had is BIG BIG BIG!

(But watch out, because in 20 years you will be dealing with all the stuff that lands and stays, and you'll end up giving away stuff as holiday door prizes. Don't be like me.)

esperanza said...

I get what you're saying, kathy a, and in some ways I would be a much happier person with a job. But there are so many signs that last week was very stressful on me: my jaw is hurting, I couldn't sleep, some other TMI things. It was also the first week back to school, which was stressful on the Baboos, and poor timing for me to have a stressful week, too. Mr. E was also having a stressful week, thanks to the youth director deal. So...I think it was a good dose of reality and will lead to a better (hypothetical at this point) decision in the future. What it told me for sure, is that I can't handle a long commute anymore. I did it as a young adult (ages 25-31), but I am smarter now.

Esperanza, I really, really understand. And wow, you already are working a lot, and it's too bad you only get paid for the preaching part!

(Dare I tell you that my office is also a sewing room with a door?)

A room with a door!!!! Awesome!

Esperanza, can you talk to albatross committee about stipend? Particularly if you've had to juggle childcare?

I was suspecting that, QWP. So, yes, doubly jealous :)

So here's how the albatross thing is: it is service to my denomination's regional body. In an ideal situation, I would have a paying job, and this service is understood as part of that job (actually this would be far from ideal, because who would have time to do this much AND their regular job?). But since I don't, there is really no mechanism for compensating me. And, to be fair, it doesn't take 25 hours every week. I barely did anything on it at all for the entire month of December...maybe 3 hours total for the whole month. And it is an ad hoc thing, not a forever and ever thing.
