Waiting for the cable guy... And now, bonus week!

Pretty exciting morning -- the cable person is coming to check the wires, because I'm still having a small problem with the internet going out for a few minutes at a time (which I actually should have gotten checked out a few months ago).  Unlike certain appliance repair people, there is a 2 hour window instead of "sometime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m."

Later, taking a sample to the vet.   Please do not be too jealous of the glamorous life.

What's happening with you?

Thanks to Esperanza for hosting last week!

And also for the Posse support.

Well, we're about at the end of the 2 hour window for the cable guy, and not a peep. Hmph.

kathy a. said...

Well, he gave me yet another modem. But for some reason, the speed seems a lot faster; and no charge. Yay.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Faster modem for free! Oh, that's exciting, Kathy. Either the default one they have is faster now, or you've been experiencing slower internet because of the buggy old modem. Either way: a win!

AW: Mr. Q figured out the biggest computer problem before having to call customer support, and so now he can get back to work. (It turns out that the other problem is because the OS is too new, and the maker of his video card hasn't released a compatible driver yet. So: the generic is good enough for now, and everyone: think twice before installing a new, shiny OS onto an older computer.)

W: Mr E is in kathy a's state with his brother, attempting to get definitive diagnoses for brother's worrisome symptoms. So far, he's gotten a new diagnosis and apparently a lot of hinting and indicating at his suspected self-diagnosis (which is ALS). He saw endocrine doctors today, and they indicated that ALS would explain some of his symptoms, but as they were obviously not neuromuscular specialists, were not able to say anything definitive. He is receiving this hinting as definitive, which I'm a bit irritated about. He will return to hometown, with referrals in hand for neuromuscular doctors, as well as follow up testing for the new diagnosis. So it's still a long road until anything final. Mr E says "he looks like crap," which is hard.

AW: the brothers (middle brother is there too) are having a good time being together

W: The Baboos are not enjoying Daddy's absence. Nor being dragged to Mama's meetings.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Hugs for all of you guys, Esperanza, as your BIL goes through the diagnosis process. And I'm praying that it's something more treatable than ALS.

kathy a. said...

((( esperanza ))) That is great the 3 brothers are there together! Not so great, the ups and downs and things remaining undefinitive.

I am a big fan of a multi-disciplinary approach for complicated medical issues, and it does sound like they are doing that at Famous U Hospital. There may be more clarity, and more suggestions, in the reports after -- usually the medical teams spend a little time afterwards explaining in writing what they saw and what it might be. And what might be good to do next. xoxo

Daddy must bring airport presents.

QWP, Mr. Q has discovered The Truth: new gizmo + old computer = wait until the dust settles.

The poopcidents, they are not good. The poop test is negative. Moving along to a plainer diet, which I think means cooking for the cat.

Does anybody have experience with / suggestions about something like a foam mattress topper? Don't want to buy a new mattress right now, if I can solve the discomfort another way.

W: Sweet is having a terrible night/day with coughing. I think it's mostly a tickly throat cough, but it's triggering some wheezing. Her head is also full of snot.

W: At the current time (7 pm), Mini has the energy of approximately 3 people on speed.

W: That's after spending almost 2 hours in the heat this morning, riding the horse.

W: Good gravy, it's hot. 104 yesterday. 101 was the highest I saw today. While we were out this morning, it was only 91, but heat index was 99. There was a nice breeze at times, and we stopped to rest in the shade. The horse and I were most happy about that.

AW: Daddy is scheduled to arrive home around midnight.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I'm so glad Mr. E is coming back tonight, Esperanza! I hope he takes the girls off your hands for a while.

We're hiding inside today, because it hit 96F (heat index 103F) today, and we Canadians don't know how to handle that. Upstairs Cousin and I foolishly decided to do canning today, and the upstairs ac struggled to keep up with us.

But I dare not complain about this heat, because it doesn't last long. Instead, I'll AW that I live in a basement suite.

AW also: pickles made from free cucumbers! My first time canning!

Also also AW: my family took E for the entire day. Left the house at 8:30 and got home just after 4.

W/AW: she fell asleep in the car on the way home, and slept soundly on the couch, in the midst of commotion, for a solid hour. Hopefully that incredibly late nap won't ruin bedtime.

esperanza said...

ooh, yeah, canning when it's that hot outside is hard on the air conditioner. And the people.

And hooray for a break for QWP! I will hold out hope for her bedtime.

Today, in Your First Grader Is Smarter Than You Are: Sweet requested to go see the pediatrician. She is not running fever, seems pretty spunky most of the time, but she does have this cough that won't stop. Since we're headed out of town on Monday, and I will not be able to take her tomorrow, I agreed. Diagnosis: beginnings of bronchitis. Antibiotics. Allergy meds. Third med for the nebulizer. I guess she really did need to go to the doctor.

kathy a. said...

Thanks for the kind words. Spot was a special cat. The vet believes it was an intestinal cancer (he could not have tolerated the treatment, even if we'd known for sure). The night before, he was still himself, sitting in my lap for petting; and a bit later, he was really out of it. Poor sweetie. It sure is quiet around here...

YIKES about all that heat, y'all!

Esperanza, glad for the return of Daddy! And yay that you caught that bronchitis. It's great that Sweet realized she needed the doctor.

QWP, the canning sounds fun -- also, yum for pickles, and yay for for family stepping in for the day!

Today is definitely a day when the American pixies get their comeuppance, after all my teasing during the winter. Today and tomorrow are going to be hot, but still under 100F. I just heard from someone on Book of Faces that they're keeping their kids home from day camp because of the heat. Also, the news has warnings for people to stay on the shade and drink lots of water, because apparently some construction worker fainted yesterday. (He's fine now.)

E would like to whine about the heat: she and her daddy were at the library, and there was a reptile show in the story room. She was so excited, but it turns out that the story room has no air conditioning, because it is an addition. With the crowd, she got very hot and started crying, and her daddy made her come home. She is being comforted by TV now, but we're avoiding all mention of reptiles.

kathy a. said...

Eek on the heat! But E will still have an interest in reptiles, since she didn't really get to know them today -- something to follow up when things cool down.

I don't know how available these books are nowadays, but my kids had a bunch of Eyewitness Books on various topics (including reptiles). They were great for all ages, because there were LOTS of photos and illustrations, and also informative bites of text. Interesting for adults as well. My kids also got to know reptiles at a local science museum, which featured a biology lab with reptiles and small animals and etc. -- pet the snake!

esperanza said...

From the front lines of the heat: YES, definitely take it seriously. Drink lots. Sit in the shade. Take frequent breaks. If you feel light-headed or headache-ish, get into some air conditioning. You do not want heat stroke, definitely not. (While I would not keep my kid home from day camp due to the heat, I would definitely make sure the day camp powers-that-be had a plan...for instance, Baboos' day camp went swimming in the afternoons to cool off).

AW: we are meeting my brother and his family at a Fun Place in between our cities.
W: this is definitely a "trip" rather than a "vacation." (There's a hilariously true description of these two things somewhere in an article recently. I'll try to find it. QWP would enjoy it particularly).
W: meaning, we have to cook. Not too bad, except that SiL is on a weird diet (not to lose weight, to try to get her digestive system in order). SiL's mother will also be coming, and she has major ulcer problems, so who knows what she's eating. Niece (age 7) is not eating gluten, because they think it makes her allergies worse. I think we're going to give up on coordinating meals and just cook for our own families. We'll have fun. I will cook a lot between now and Monday and do a lot of warming stuff up.

Well, I"m holding off for a couple hours. We are overtaxing the electrical grid in this state, so they're asking people to turn up thermostats and not use any unnecessary electricity. Or...I could just cook the food outside. 103 at last check.

Oh, thank you for that post, Esperanza! I think my last vacation was my trip to Maui five years ago (but that was to help a friend get married, and I was an usher, so that might have been a trip). Of course, by the "no kitchen" criteria, even my honeymoon wasn't a vacation, because I insist on getting places with kitchenettes, so that I don't have to waste money on restaurants for EVERY meal!

Esperanza: cooking today is foolishness! I hope you guys get everything figured out logistically for your trip.

Tomorrow will be the hottest day all week, and so my friend and I decided that we're getting our kids together indoors, instead of at the splash pad. There is NO shade there, and the kids would likely only spent a little bit of time in the water and then keep trying to play in the blazing hot playground. Too much potential for heat stroke!

W: we have a lovely day at the lake planned for Saturday, but apparently there's been a massive sewage leak that has spread as far as the lake that connects to the one we're visiting. We're going to have to see what the water quality is like before we attempt any swimming.

esperanza said...

Well, but now I gotta cook it, because it's bread and it's rising.

We always, even on "vacations," (of which there are precious few. Like 2), pack our own breakfasts. It would be less relaxing for us to have to get up and be presentable enough to eat out somewhere. Not to mention my frugal side :)

Ew on the sewage leak. Yuck.

kathy a. said...

I am partial to kitchenettes, but mostly because of the kids along and/or extended work thing and/or etc. It also is a pain to always have to eat out, which is I guess why regular hotels now offer minifridges and microwaves.

Um, a sewage leak would make me reconsider the splash pad, or letting the kids run in the sprinklers or something. With frozen treats and times indoor! ick ick.

Esperanza, best on the bread!

If my beloved really loved us, he would have taken his car and brought home this excellent pizza from near his work, cooked in a commercial kitchen not our own. Maybe another day.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

The sewage leak isn't in our own water supply (our supply comes from a lake west of us, and the leak is on the lake east of it, although it's overflow from our sewage treatment plant that caused it).

Esperanza, I hope the baking went well yesterday!

W: E is having a terrible day today, and so far refuses to nap. We're spending the day at the cabin tomorrow, and plan to let her skip her nap (she wouldn't nap at the cabin anyway, and so we're just going to do quiet time in one of the bedrooms). I'm dreading the weekend.

kathy a. said...

Oh, poor E and poor E's mama. Nap fights are not happy times. Also, I'd like to point out that on the trip, she will be entertained and you can also pass her off to others, in theory anyway.

My adult daughter called in tears, because she is feeling all kinds of stress and some nasty customer dumped on her pretty badly in an email, about things beyond her control. And I did not win any parent of the year awards for graceful delivery of message. But she did take my advice and put the bad customer problem on her boss' desk, where it belongs (and also finally told the boss about the cat dying), and things are better. Plus, she decided to buy some cake -- which is an excellent plan.

esperanza said...

Marathon meeting yesterday (5 hours), which led to a wakeful night processing it all. Darn the introvert-ness. Which led to a day in which I am accomplishing approximately none of the things I need to get done so we can leave Monday. Which has led to great resentment on my part toward Mr E's general cluelessness that preparing for a *trip* requires more than packing his own suitcase.

I can haz cake too plz?

kathy a. said...

Cake! For everyone! Your choice!! Ice cream, too, because of the heat -- I just bought tahitian vanilla bean and a tub of gourmet lemon+berry.

Also best to those on or contemplating car trips with baboos. May the singing and road games prevail.

Esperanza, would a list help at all? Not having to do all the hunting and gathering oneself is soothing (although you'll have to check the work, to avoid classic problems like no underwear and/or no toothbrushes).

It always takes me a good while to wind down from stuff, too.

AW: The vet office sent a sweet condolence card and a pawprint of our Spottie.

W: Somebody stole my credit card info, so I got turned down at the grocery store with the fancy ice cream. The bad charges are in TN and Plano TX, places I obviously have not been. Hate when that happens. (What does it mean that they put through a $2 charge in Plano? That somebody was checking to see if the card works?)

Ah, well. Everyone is deserving of prizes, but flakiness rules the day, again. Carry on!

xoxo

AW: Got a lot done today despite the fact that U-H@u1, while renting terrific trucks, has amazingly bad customer service. They promised me a lower-than-usual rate on a larger truck than I'd reserved, because they made a mistake and double-booked my original truck (poor customer service issue number one), and then they charged me the regular rate for the truck instead of the promised rate (poor customer service issue number two) and then, when I tried to call customer service to get it straightened out, their automated system kept hanging up on me (poor customer service issue number 3). That last bit is probably because it's after 6 PM all over the United States. I'll call Monday morning.

W: The place that promised to shred our stuff for 75 cents a pound for over 100 pounds and whose website said they were open Saturdays and whose phone system said, "we're on another line right now, or helping another customer, leave your name and number and we'll call you right back!" is not actually open on Saturdays. BUT!

AW: FedEx took the 20 boxes we had and charged us 79 cents a pound, despite the fact that the price went UP to 99 cents a pound TODAY!!! AND!!

AW: Best Buy took all our defunct electronics for recycling! Even the stuff with tubes! FOR FREE! TWO CARTLOADS FULL! AND!!!!

AW: They insisted on loading our new electronics that we bought from them into our rented truck! AND!!!

AW: Our new electronics work.

Liz Miller said...

Esperanza, it's time for a come-to-Jesus discussion with your sweetie regarding packing and the shared responsibility therein.

He is helping today. I have to say, "I need help with Task X?" Which is hard for me.

Public Service Announcement: if you are going to double a cookie recipe, you should double every ingredient listed. Especially the flour. If you fail to double the flour, and use the flat cookie sheets, the cookies will run off the pan and burn onto the floor of the oven and smell just like burnt sugar.

In related news, I'm tired.

kathy a. said...

Yikes on the oven burn -- hate that! Yay on the help.

It got up to 95F outside today. (The average high on an August day in our area is 71.) We have no AC. It is close to 90 indoors. Ye Olde Icemaker is not keeping up. The air looks like Los Angeles in the 1970's, due to wildfires to the north. Anybody have a spare walk-in freezer?

esperanza said...

95 is way too hot for no a/c. It got that hot here today, then we got some wind off of thunderstorms (no rain, alas), and it cooled down to a very pleasant 83. Amazing how good it felt.

kathy a. said...

I would wish for wind, except the entire state is a tinderbox. We just need a monsoon, please. It's down to 80 now (85 in the house); step in the right direction.

Good luck on the road trip, and may the car games be with you!

Oh sure, I can fit in another pediatrician visit this morning. Swimmer's ear for Sweet. Please avert your eyes while I allow her to swim on vacation this week, against medical advice.

kathy a. said...

Eek. There is this stuff at drug stores, silicone ear plugs. We had to use it for my daughter because she had tubes. It softens easily, fits the ear well, is not uncomfortable, and it keeps the water out.

kathy a. said...

Whee, there was a little earthquake this morning, about 10 miles from here -- sharp little rattle and roll. Just a 4.0, but the cat and I became alert. The only damage of which I've heard was that my son's girlfriend's mother had some of the little things she collects fall over in the cabinet. (She's very close to the epicenter. She has a lot of little ceramic figures, vases, photos, etc.)

In a blitz the last few days, finished 3 bits of Albatross II. It is so exciting!

What's new with you?

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I was wondering how close you were to the epicenter, Kathy! I'm glad that you didn't have any damage. I remember, when I lived on the west coast, everyone putty to keep their breakables from toppling in a smallish earthquake.

AW: we're having a few days of cool weather, and after that heat wave, I'm so relieved! I stayed home when Mr. Q and E went to the Science Centre this morning, and I baked bread and did a bunch of gardening. (I also did almost all the laundry, and reorganized the deep freeze. Having E out of the house for a few hours is the best.)

W: headache.

kathy a. said...

QWP -- Yay about cooler weather, and time with the kidlet occupied elsewhere!

Earthquakes are so odd. I've been through 2 "big ones," so at first you wait to see if it is getting bigger and going on and on. This one didn't, just a couple of jolts and some shakes. 5 seconds, maybe. We live close to the Hayward Fault, so -- foundation bolted; the water heater is strapped; bookcases bolted to the walls. I mostly gave up on earthquake putty years ago, because it made cleaning so hard, just collected all the dust.

My SIL with the peculiar dementia is on a downward spiral again. They're looking into adjusting her meds again -- maybe they reduced a couple too far? She is stuck on this endless, frantic, tearful loop of wondering when her first ex is coming, they're getting married, but he isn't here and is he coming?, and on and on and on. Not 24/7, but they're now talking "uncontrollable outbursts," and this is the number one topic, always. The medical pot is helping, but not enough.

Also, for reasons unknown, she needs to go buy Chanel makeup. That one is kind of under control for now, since they gave her a cosmetic case with some (not Chanel) makeup to keep in her room. She cannot do her own makeup any more.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Liz. We had a good 2-3 months with no drama! When we get reports like this, it makes me worry about what's next -- but they do have a good plan for re-evaluating the meds and consulting with SIL's neurologist. Was able to make a few other suggestions about handling certain aspects of the situation.

The obsessive fixation on her first ex astonishes me. Wish I had one of those memory-erasing doo-dads from Men in Black. ;)

kathy, sending you and your daughter hugs. My beloved cat died last Thanksgiving, and I still get sad about it. It was fairly sudden (lymphoma, took two weeks), but even if I had had more time with him, it wouldn't have changed the heartache. So sweet of the vet's office to send a card. xoxo

AW: My BFF is pregnant! Finally! After much trying and seeing of doctors! Testing shows the baby has no chromosomal issues and is not a carrier for Tay-Sach's! (Her husband's family has Ashkenazi heritage.) Huzzah!

W: --And this is completely petty, I know -- She didn't tell me for a long time. Like, for weeks after telling a mutual friend. I *know* it was partly because she was worried that she might miscarry (this is her first pregnancy) and also partly because she wanted to tell me in person, but I'm still a little hurt. I *will* get over it, of course, but still. *pout*

Here-Is-My-Real-Whine: The school that my kids are supposed to go to this fall? Part of the process of converting to a public charter meant relocating, so they found a building and got all the funding and preliminary approval from the township and state, but now the township is refusing to issue the last required rubber stamp in order to allow the school to move in. In other words, there is a possibility the school won't open. *headdesk* I don't fully understand all the politics, but the nutshell is that it takes one last approval, and the board just rejected it this week. So we're waiting to see what's going to happen between now and Sept 8, the start of the school year here.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, I will get over it, especially because I love her and I know why she waited.

The township is acting foolish, I think. The building our school is moving into is being vacated by another school. Previous School had a student body of 135 kids. Our School has roughly 150. Township said that the streets couldn't handle the increased traffic load, but the zoning board signed off (because it's not an absurd increase). Why the township is doing this is beyond me. I would feel better if the school -- who has been great about communicating with families -- would send an update, though. :/

W: potty training. Stubborn toddler. But we either need to try to move forward with potty training or switch her back to regular diapers, because she's been saving up her pee and then letting it out thunderously, in such a way that the daytime pull-ups can't contain. My new couch got soaked.

AW: we're finding things that help. But ugh.

kathy a. said...

Ack, comment lost. But anyway -- 3 suggestions. [1] Frequent potty reminders, which work best if something desired cannot happen until potty occurs. [2] Exposure to peers who are using the potty (positive peer pressure by example). [3] And, amazing Big Girl Underwear that she can pick herself, and not use until X amount of potty achievement. (It's recommended that you take precautions during the initial stage of Big Girl Underwear, and still do something for nighttime.)

My uncle the dentist bribed my youngest cousin with M&M's for every success. Which I'm not recommending, and I can't even believe he did that. A dentist! But guess he had read about Pavlov.

Meet the Teacher day at Baboos' school. W: Not super excited about either teacher. Not turned off, but not overly in awe, either. AW: New principal is impressive. I introduced myself to her at Dairy Queen (small town alert) a couple of weeks ago. I see her this afternoon at Meet the Teacher, turn to Mr E to say, "this is the new principal," and she says to him, "Oh you must be Mr.[Lastname]" I commented that I was impressed that she remembered my name, and she said, "well I was grateful that you took the time to introduce yourself, so I remembered." Also AW: Sweet was nervous but very excited and happy to be back at school.

Our trip was definitely a trip and not a vacation, but we did have some fun. And we finally figured out how to wear Mini out so she'll go to sleep. But the bad news is that it took playing all morning and then climbing and sliding down river rapids all afternoon, plus a 1/4 mile hike to the rapids and back. Mini was not the only one worn out.

kathy a. said...

Cool about the back to school, the new principal, and that Sweet is excited! I think maybe Mini is an athlete or something.

Is it possible for Sweet to choose a different activity that she'll like better? (Could be more running around for Mama, but eliminates the fairness problem, promotes exploring personal interests.)

Sorry about the albatrossi, and the progression of a person from dead weight to quadruped posterior.

Given developments, think I'll go with my sweetie to visit his sister this weekend. Long drive. Even on relatively good days, it is draining to see this sad shell of a person. I got some more makeup and a cute little stuffed bear. Cannot think of a single other thing to do, except find a new restaurant to try on our way home.

My son, his girlfriend, and his GF's friend just swooped in for a few camping supplies. Like, most of them -- tent, sleeping bags, camp stove + propane, tarp, bed pads, dad's new fishing pole, cooler, and I'm not quite sure what else. And forks and spoons. They said they have cooking pots and dishes. Now they are headed to the supermarket with a terrible parking lot and huge crowds at this hour on a friday, before the 3 hour drive to the camp place.

Also, it turns out son's GF doesn't eat meat any more, which he forgot to mention, so nobody had the ham + bean soup. At least I heard that before the holidays, yes?

I'm fully into distraction mode, since there's nothing I can do about it, other than be supportive. On the home front, I had two toddler successes today: even though it took a lot of persuading (and she didn't quite make it twice), E has made a lot of progress with the potty over the last two days, AND she willingly ate the fancy/unusual pizza I made for supper (balsamic caramelized onions and goat cheese).

W: Mr. Q goes back to work next week, and she's already being clingy in anticipation. I need to prepare myself for some regression. (And I'm already exhausted from how much persuasion it takes for her to take a potty break! Even when she has a goal in mind, and when she knows she has to go. She's always fixated on some other task.)

Kathy, I agree with Esperanza: lots of food left for you! And it's a good thing that you'll have a lot of time to figure out nice vegetarian holiday food.

Hooray for E and potty progress! It is all consuming for the parent.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

And then she followed that up with a night of little sleep, thanks to nightmares. The poor little sweetie. esperanza said...

oh poor thing. And poor mama.

Mini said she had a "good dream about kindergarten," which it must have been, because it did more to allay her fears than anything I have said. She also transformed yesterday afternoon into the world's most obedient child and cleaned up her entire room all by herself, quite diligently. I have no idea what has happened, but I am not questioning it.

Exposing my high-brow tastes again (~snort~) -- does anyone watch Last Tango in Hallifax? I've only just started, and it is a little slower than some shows. And really just a nighttime soap opera. But I've run through my old reliables, and there is no more Grace and Frankie for a while yet.
