It's a dog!
Here's Clyde, who had no trouble settling in and making himself at home! Clyde's about two, and a rescue from Hurricane Harvey. He is just the sweetest.
It turns out that Clyde is a little higher-energy than projected, and really really really wants to do something with somebody all the time. Which was his schedule this weekend. But today, The Man went to work, so we are having some sads. This has led me to suggest something I never thought I would, that maybe we need another dog to keep this dog company? We already had a resident dog, the last time we got a younger dog; they entertained one another.
My husband is totally smitten, and he no longer has a dog-shaped hole in his life.
What's the haps with you?

Weirdly (maybe I should blame Clyde), I am teetering toward my "no dog" policy. Sweet is about to turn TEN on Sunday, and if we gave her a dog for her birthday, she would just about be flying, she would be so happy. It seems momentous, and there's never going to be a perfect time, and and and.
But, before I give in, I'm declaring some policy changes from the last time we had a dog: said dog will *not* be going on road trips with us. Mr E is going to have to give in to a kennel or figure something out. This one is not negotiable. The 10-12 people gathering at my parents' house for holidays do not need to add a dog to the mix. I may also be leaning toward crate training, but I'm less set on that. He's pushing for puppy; I'd be happy with a more grown up dog.
NO puppies! I'm very firm on that. I am not a dog trainer, and cannot spend all my time on a puppy. Yes, on the no road trip rule!
I'm with you, Esperanza, on those limits.
((((KLee)))), how utterly frustrating and enraging.
Oh wow, I just read KLee's late-breaking whines from the last post! So many hugs, and I hope your power is back on. (And "No power for days, and all of our food spoiled twice" is a major whine anywhere!)
KLee! I'm so sorry, I overlooked your posts at the end of last week's thread! Hope hope home this gets settled swiftly. What a mess. xoxoxo
Call off the dogs, so to speak. Mr E had a very logical argument (usually logical arguments are my specialty) that it would make sense to get the dog after Christmas, thereby postponing Doggy's First Stay at the Kennel for most of the year.
That is a wise argument, esperanza! And Kathy, Clyde seems like such a sweetie! This is a very dog-filled Wednesday Whining.
AW: I've just spent the evening pleasantly distracted by coming up with suggestions for a friend who is spending Christmas in the city where I used to live. She wanted Christmas Eve service suggestions (our church doesn't do an evening service, and she's hoping for something candlelit), and also for what's open and fun to do on Christmas Day. Researching that (since it's been five years since I lived there) was a very fun exercise!
W: I made banana bread, and I must have accidentally added too much baking soda. It's such a sharp flavour in my mouth! And I can't bear for it to go to waste, and so I'm going to have to eat so much of that weird flavour.
QWP, can you disguise it in banana bread pudding? Or banana bread french toast? Or, stick with me here, banana bread ice cream cake?
W: so now I have to figure out what to get Sweet for her birthday.
QWP, we have a long-ago story of Mr. E putting 3/4 CUP of baking soda in chocolate chip cookies instead of 3/4 TSP. I came through the kitchen to taste the dough, spit it out, and then we had to throw it out. There was no rescuing it. I admire your fortitude with the banana bread, but...truthfully, I'd probably throw it away, too.
Welcome Clyde!!!
esperanza, I can't believe Sweet is 10! The no travel policy for a pup makes perfect sense, as does waiting until after the holidays.
So many hugs to you KLee, as you try to get life back to normal after all the damage from the storm.
W: I signed up for an evening yoga class two nights a week. It starts at 6:30. Hubby likes to eat supper early if we can, so we eat between 5 and 5:30 most nights. What this means is that I eat about an hour before class. The result is wicked heartburn. I used to enjoy downward dogs...now they BURN!! I don't normally have heartburn or reflux of any kind, but clearly lying flat for mat work, and doing yoga poses doesn't agree with me. The class goes into mid-December. I may have to let hubby eat at his regular time and have mine warmed over when I get home.
Totally unanticipated yoga complication.
I'd say you gave the banana bread the old college try, Esperanza, and it will still serve as compost.
Ouchie, Sue! Is it possible to just snack with your sweetie before class, eat more after?
My husband is going to sign Clyde up for doggie day care, so he gets more activity and socialization, at least on some days. I'm merely OK as mama to The Amazing Clyde; but not going to be spending all day hanging with him. This is pretty funny, since day care never occurred to him for any of our other dogs. It is possible he is re-directing the grandchild desires, to the benefit of The Magnificent Clyde.
There is a 7 page questionnaire for doggy day care! This is the 4th day we have known this dog! We did see that he did well with all other dogs, cats, and humans at the shelter, though; and aside from the chewing, he has displayed zero troublesome tendencies at home or on walks.
Sue, my sister has the same problem! (Pilates class at 6:30 triggering heartburn.) She eats a gentle snack before, and has reheated supper after class.
Kathy: seven pages of questionnaire! Yes, I imagine there's a lot of guessing about his habits, at this point.
Esperanza: 3/4 cup of baking soda!! Okay, that makes me feel better about using 2tsp instead of 1.
W: why is there a 1 double teaspoon spoon on my measuring spoon ring? I can't think of any situation where that's needed instead of a 1/4 tsp measure. I think I'm going to remove it from the ring, so that I don't accidentally use it again.
I use my 2 tsp measure often, along with my one-and-a-half and two tablespoon measures.
Hubby will need to eat at his usual time, because diabetes. He's had a consistent food schedule for so many years, I'm not sure messing with that two days a week is a good idea. When we go out for dinner and eat later, he's fine, but has to monitor his blood sugar much more carefully. When he stays on schedule, it's all much lower maintenance. So I suspect he will eat as always, I'll warm up later.
Sweet turning 10 means that we also missed our 10th anniversary of WW at this location. She was born shortly after Phantom stopped hosting, and we moved over here. So, happy anniversary to us!
Seriously? 10 years? Well, that's something!
Wait a minute. The first regular edition at this new place was July 18, 2007, so we already missed the anniversary by a couple of months and change. My bad! http://wednesdaywhining.blogspot.com/2007/07/welcome-to-whiners-ball.html
Sue, that's what my parents do (my sister lives with them), and that's why her leftovers are reheated. Maybe on those days, you can make sure that supper is low-maintenance/in the slow cooker?
Happy belated 10th birthday to the current location of WW, and happy upcoming birthday to Sweet!
Passing the sheet cake, ice cream, beverages of choice, and meals that can be served at different times!
Also the chips and guacamole; the hummus and pita; the olives; the sushi; the standby soups, and the fabulous BBQ items. What the heck, brie and baguettes. Dim sum. Pasta. Know I'm leaving things out....
Our church is celebrating our 140th anniversary as a congregation this year. Which we didn't realize until our governing body sent a congratulatory letter. Hey, any excuse for a party!
Ah, the years slip by... 140 years is a long time!!
It's a good thing that the governing body sent you a letter! An excellent reason for a party.
Thanks, everyone -- we DO have power. It took 5 and 1/2 days, and 17 phone calls to the power company, but it's finally back on. There's still a tree on our cable line, so we're slowly working at sawing that apart and fixing it.
Work is starting to slow down, so I'm looking forward to days off! Now, for Sue to send the cold front down this way, and we'll be set!
Happy Whine-aversary! Passing the biscuits and sweet tea....
KLee
Glad you got your power back, KLee!! Our temp dropped to 6C last night (0C is frost-on-the-windshield time) so it's definitely Fall here.
Yay esperanza! Party!!
OMG, the tow truck finally came! The dead car is gone!
Had PT this morning, for my lower back. Got some stretching and strengthening exercises to start with.
Hooray for the power being back on for KLee, and for the dead car being gone for Kathy!
Yea, about the power back on, KLee! That's a long time to go without.
We're all about the bodily substances over here, today. The first poopcident was when I woke up too early, and someone of the feline persuasion had left something in the darkened hallway. Even though the litter boxes were clean. Incident #2, apparently the dog had a little pee accident on the carpet during the night, which naturally I found with my foot. And the second poocident, we don't know when it happened, but a large load was hidden in the garage, under a flattened shipping box that apparently fell over on top of it. I really really hate poop. That is all.
That is way too much bodily substance for one day, kathy. Way too much.
AW: dishwasher parts are in, appointment scheduled for tomorrow.
W: for some reason, Wednesdays are heavy homework days for both Baboos. (where "heavy" = book to read, 3 facts to write about book, and spelling words practice for Mini; book to read, plot worksheet, math worksheet, and spelling words for Sweet. It's not burdensome, and it's nothing compared to the load Sweet had in 1st grade at her former school, but why do they have to have the most to do on the same night of the week?
Esperanza, that is a true Wednesday Whine! Is there any part of the homework that could be done ahead, or do you just get the whole load assigned on Wednesday? Maybe the reading a book parts (at least) could happen earlier?
The assignment is to read a book every night, or read for 20 min/night. The spelling words need to be reviewed every night. The worksheets and math and such just appear on the night of. We made it.
AW: Taco Wednesday
Go, tacos!
In more dog news, the paperwork is in, and Clyde gets his interview with doggy day care tomorrow morning. Yay! If all goes well, he can stay for 5 hours while they see how he does -- and seriously, this dog just loves everybody, so it should be win-win. And will distract him from The Man leaving town for a few days. (Yes, bad timing on that trip.) I'm Clyde's second favorite human so far, so there's that in the meantime.
I'm crossing fingers for Clyde's doggy daycare interview! (But ugh for all the bodily fluids/poo that you've had to deal with today.)
And hooray for taco night! But yeah, that's way too much homework for an average school night, with baboos so young.
AW: I'm making borscht with beets from my garden!
Possible w: we'll see what E thinks of it.
We just did a Dog Challenge, trying to get Clyde into my car (when he thought he was going on a WALK, OMG A WALK! And he is so compliant, but he really wanted to Walk with The Man. Anyway, this is so small potato nobody cares news, but considering The Man will be gone when we leave, I'll put a blanket Clyde has slept on in the back, and he will get a pig ear, yes he will. That should do it. Knock wood. I am not a dog person, really.
(I'm prepared to toss some of my beloved's dirty laundry back there, if that's what it takes. But I think we won't need to go that far.)
I've used the dirty laundry trick when dog sitting! Whatever works, right?
AW: beet borscht was a hit! (I pureed it, and E was thrilled that she was eating purple soup.) And then Mr. Q fixed my stand mixer's wobbly head, and so I can stop researching small appliance repair places. (I'd unsuccessfully tried to find the loose screws myself; Mr. Q figured out how to take the whole thing apart, and discovered that the loose screws were UNDER the motor.)
W: I suspect that the Q household is coming down with another bug, days after we recovered from the last one. I'm run down, with a sore throat and either nausea or sinus dizziness. Mr. Q is sneezing. E had to come home from the playground because the swing was making her feel nauseated. (She does not get motion sickness, normally.)
Legal update. You will think I'm making this up, but my daughter is currently studying one of the most famous contracts cases, known as Carbolic Smoke Ball -- it's a hoot, because this company claimed that using the smoke ball would prevent or cure influenza. Just after the pandemic of 1890-91. Mrs. Carhill used the thing, and got influenza anyway, and the company didn't want to pay up the 100 pounds promised. The company lost! It's a great case, lots more fun than most contracts cases, especially because of the name. Carbolic.Smoke.Ball.
Carbolic Smoke Ball!!! Wow. :)
Sorry about all the pook etc, kathy. Yay doggie daycare!
That's a lot of homework, esperanza. I don't remember doing that much homework with our boys, but they're in their thirties now, so it's been awhile. :)
Clyde passed the initial assessment and is doing a trial day at the doggie day care. He made a couple friends already. The dogs have playtime in groups, and some rest time also. He'll be hanging with some younger dogs today. I'm relieved! He's more active and more clingy than the previous dogs. It's gonna be a long weekend without the Dog Man -- so I'm taking him back each day for happy social time.
Dishwasher repairman due in 15 minutes...
AW:...and arrived in 10! Let's see if he can fix it.
Dishwasher guy! Our hero! Tell him we're rooting for him!
Oh, guess he's not still there. Probably.
He's finished! It works! Hooray!
Yay for happy pups at daycare!
Yay for working dishwashers!!
W: Noisy day at the office - we're converting from electric (expensive!!) heat to gas/hot water heat. Temps down around zero last night means they need to finish before the weekend or we'll be mighty chilly Sunday morning. They were hard at it all day.
AW: What a great bunch of guys doing the job! They clearly love what they do and work well together. I was surprisingly productive today, despite (or perhaps because of?) all the commotion in the building.
Go, conversion team at Sue's church!
Kudos to Mr. Dishwasher, also!
This just sounds so insane, even to me, but we worried over Clyde today. I was so nervous this morning that I took the wrong street, even though I know where it is. And, every call that came in, I worried it was about Clyde. My husband called at least twice about the dog.
Clyde had a glorious day! Got along with everybody; played well, he was so happy! Whew! And he's signed up for the next few days, when The Dog Man will still be gone.
I'm so glad that Clyde did well! And I was similarly distracted when E had her first day of preschool (and likely had the same worries).
And hooray for the repaired dishwasher, and the repair guy arriving early, esperanza!
W: I've realised that my occasional mild nausea and sore throat are all the result of my GERD flaring up badly. Oh boy, is the acid reflux bad lately, even when I'm eating bland food. I'd better restart taking my acid reducer.
AW: my full physical is tomorrow, and at least this time I'll be discussing a series of mild, common complaints, instead of any larger worries.
Oh, QWP! Well, this is a good issue to bring up at the physical. And, not a huge one, either. xoxo
Yay Clyde!! I can see why you might be distracted, kathy. Helping a new family member settle in can be tricky.
QWP, I hope your appointment goes well today. I hope the reflux eases up.
I have a full physical on Thursday next week. It's been a few years, so my doc is going to want to do the works. I've been keeping up with paps and mams, but he hasn't done blood work for ages.
Excellent advice on the yoga reflux problem, pixies! Eating a light snack late in the afternoon, then dinner after my class worked well and made the class much more enjoyable.
Go, Sue!
OMG, more about the dog.... I'm so excited that we made it through the night, no untoward incidents whatsoever! Yes, we've had dogs for the better part of 25 years. But the only other one who came to us young, we had an older dog also, who showed her the ropes and was very patient with all the playfulness. Like, he let her jump and chew on him; ran around with her. That was our doggy day care plan, then.
Anyway, one more time we might have a small last name problem. Even though I am the official cat person, I took Clyde over for his interview and they have my credit card. Therefore, at the vet -- where my husband got there first with a pet, so all our pets are in a file under his name -- he will be Clyde [HisName], and at day care he will be Clyde [MyName]. I'm pretty sure Clyde will be cool with it.
I’m loving the updates from everyone!!! Purple soup! Taco night! Doggy happiness! Working and more efficient appliances!
And I got the job! Start date on the 10th!
Went on a bit of a spending spree today. Because job! Yay! BENEFITS!!!
Liz on iPhone at pizza parlor with Muffin Man
WOOOOOOT, LIZ!!!!! Such good news!
Yay job! Yay benefits! Yay pizza!
Hooray! Congratulations, Liz! And hooray for benefits!!
So, it turns out they still want immunization records when someone starts law school. Our current medical practice says they don't have them -- even though we're pretty sure they were sent over from the previous medical practice. So, the next 2 steps are contacting the previous practice, and (this part's genius!) contacting her college, which we know for sure got the immunization records.
She's 28. This hasn't been the kind of thing I keep at hand for a long time, you know?
What?! I don't think I've been asked for my records since I started kindergarten. (Now, our region is having issues because of that, but still.) I had no idea that law school would request them!
AW-ish: My physical went pretty well, and now I'm going to spend the next month on a prescription-strength proton pump inhibitor, to get my GERD under control and get everything healed up.
W: In the meanwhile, I'm looking wistfully in the direction of take-out restaurants. Mr. Q and I had decided that we were going to order out when he got his first paycheque of the year (teachers here are paid over 10 months, and then we save up through the school year for the summer -- teachers negotiated for this, because then they can earn interest on the money when they're not being paid over 12 months -- but we always feel the pinch a bit by the end of September). Now, I need to wait a bit, and stay on a fairly bland diet, while I let my stomach and esophagus heal up, and I'm not necessarily taking it gracefully. I did allow myself some green tea, but my head is not happy about the overall drop in caffeine levels. Oh, and I had arranged to have a friend come over with her daughter, who is selling chocolate mint Girl Guide cookies! I still ate two of them, and am now regretting it.
I need to behave myself and allow my body to heal over this next week. Thanksgiving is next weekend! I will be eating two turkey dinners over the course of three days, and I fully plan on enjoying them. (Thankfully, the literature on these meds say that I'll feel better in four days.)
Oy, QWP! I mean, the Rx is good, but can really relate to advice about switching out the diet, because you feel so deprived, amiright?
Also, 2 turkey dinners is overkill. Even though I know people do that! You might take some plastic leftover containers, and ask if you can take some for later. (We usually over-supply for big holiday meals, and are glad to have everybody say they like this or that and take it home.)
I should clarify that our turkey dinners won't be anything as elaborate as a traditional American Thanksgiving! We're doing an early supper on Saturday and on Monday, with each side of the family. With my family, it'll be: a small turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, stuffing, cranberries, salad, and pumpkin pie. We usually do a little bit of sweet potatoes (no marshmallows), but we might skip them this year. My in-laws sometimes do things a little more elaborately, but we'll be a much smaller group this year than before, and Mr. Q, E, and I are the only ones not on special diets. It won't be too hard for me to handle.
(Unless my FIL does his deep-fried wings. That could be trouble.)
OK then! (But I still advocate taking some leftovers, if offered.)
I'm having dog allergy stuff. And Clyde teh dog is feeling so much more comfortable and full of his doggy self, so now there are whole rituals around how to get in the car without him running off, and not letting him in the garage if he might be tempted to use it as the rest room, and Using My Firm Mom-Dog Voice. Always having treats, and talking a lot of Sweet Dog Mama when I don't have to be Mean Dog Mama. Pulling back on the leash when he tries to go do crazy young dog things, and planning ahead so I'm not holding anything else that might get me unbalanced in the event of attempted bolting. Like that.
Yay Liz!!!!! Congrats!!!
And yay QWP for the prescription!
Hugs to all!
:) Neighbor Lady
Pook in the dog room overnight. Plus, bark from Senior Cat, barely missing the heater vent. All is well now! The Fun Daddy is coming home to entertain His Boy.
Fortunately, I was able to find the "nature's miracle" stuff, so maybe that will discourage further subversive actions. We'll see! Plus, got new treat/bribes in today.
