Slower Than Christmas Whining

I have it on good authority that Christmas will never come; alternatively, it will take forever to get here.

If you are a whining pixie that does not celebrate Christmas, I'm the tiniest bit jealous right now.

What are your whines? Bring 'em! Large or small, complex or simple, we'll take them all!

The dog is heartbroken because Her Man went to work, and she doesn't want to be outside. When she was inside earlier, she pre-consoled herself by eating most of a bowl of cat food.

Today's festivities include: writing a work something; post office; food shopping; continue tree decorating; continue the War on Ants; get daughter to clean the front bathroom.

I am attempting to finish up a sewing project while Baboos are present. It is slow going.

Mini has outsmarted me once already this morning.

Playdate is coming soon!

Advance W: I'm anticipating a March primary election whine. In the presidential primary, I want to vote in the Democratic primary. However, in my local elections, there are virtually no Democrats running, and in the races that do include Democrats, there is only one running. So, essentially, this would allow me to vote only in the presidential primary. I do have strong opinions about some of my local Republican candidates, who are running against 2-3 opponents in the Republican primary. But I can't vote in the Republican primary for the local elections and the Democratic primary for the national elections. Texas does not require that you declare a party in advance; you just ask for whichever party's ballot you want when you walk in the door of the polling place. I'm happy to hear your advice.

W: Elderly Kitty has started losing bladder control. This morning it was on the bed. Duvet, cover, sheets, pillows etc.... all washed, dried and back in place.

Damn. She's so thin, she won't eat much, and she's sleeping even more than usual. I suspect it won't be long.

Just, damn.

esperanza said...

Oh, I'm so sorry, Sue. Poor thing. Hugs to you and hubby.

kathy a. said...

((( Sue ))) Sending kitty love.

kathy a. said...

Esperanza, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't use this opportunity to vote wisely at the local level. (Unless you feel very strongly about the D presidential primary.) Local and state elections are incredibly important, even though they don't get all the flashy press. Bonus: the chance to vote down the clown of your choice!

Half hour line at the post office. What I get for not going last week; but the little cousins will get their gifts on time.

AW: Rain!

W: ants. I mean, one hitched a ride during Project Cleanup in the kitchen, and it just showed up on my face. ICK.

AW: Tree! Sparkly! Nobody has so much as batted an ornament off yet!

W/AW: Beloved has a cold, but he went to work anyway today. Chance of incoming grumpies.

esperanza said...

Oh mercy. Man cold. That's rough for Christmas week.

Esperanza, the rule is think global, VOTE LOCAL. Bernie, Hillary, and Marty are all excellent choices and you'd be happy with any of them, right? Go, thou, and vote in the Republican primary..

esperanza said...

OK, that's what I was thinking, but thanks for the confirmation, kathy and Liz. My only regret is that I do so enjoy surprising the poll workers when I ask for the D ballot. Ah well. It's a small sacrifice.

kathy a. said...

None of their beeswax, anyway. Secret ballot.

kathy a. said...

What happens if someone is undeclared, or belongs to a non-major party?

esperanza said...

No, it's none of their beeswax, but I fit the demographic (especially here) for Republican Voter, and it's fun to ask for the other. In the primary, you have to ask for whatever party's ballot you want. No one declares a party--you can switch at every primary, if you want (ahem). If you want a non-major party ballot, I guess you can ask for it, if a non-major party were ever to hold a primary in this state.

Liz Miller said...

It works the same way here in VA. No party registration, which is why the republicans usually go for a caucus, where they can make participants sign a loyalty oath.

Sweet. Earache. Middle of the night. Off to the doctor this morning.

Sue said...

Man-cold and earache - ugh. (((esperanza)))

W: I'm taking our beautiful kitty to the vet today. She's in misery and it's time to free her. She was very wheezy through the night and isn't eating. To wait until next week (ie, after the holiday) would only be for our sake, not hers, and that feels cruel. So it will be today.

AW: A dear friend is going to drive me and kitteh to the vet. She's good people and she understands why I cry huge ugly tears for a cat when I can get through pretty much any human funeral without a single tear.

kathy a. said...

((( Sue ))) I'm so sorry about the loss of your sweet kitty. xoxo

Esperanza, hope for a fast cure for the earache.

Liz Miller said...

(((Sue))) I'm thinking of you today

esperanza said...

(((Sue))) So sorry. I'm so glad you have some support from your friend.

Sweet just has an ear infection. And the man-cold was in kathy's household, not mine. Whew.

kathy a. said...

Man-cold crisis is over.

Here's to the shot working swiftly on the ear infection front.

esperanza said...

No shot. 10 days of antibiotics. I was in deep doo doo this morning when I wouldn't *promise* that she wouldn't get a shot. I take my promises seriously, so I wouldn't promise that because I didn't know. That was unsatisfactory. Ibuprofen has taken care of the pain; first dose of antibiotics has been administered.

I am glad the man-cold has been averted. Whew.

kathy a. said...

This was a bargain: no shot, have to take the meds for all 10 days. No complaining! (Sending mama strength anyway.)

More love to Sue and teh good kitteh. xoxo

W: Ran an errand, and somebody in an SUV parked [in my spot] in front of my house, also partially blocking my driveway, just sitting there writing something on paper and looking at the cell phone. Which is weird -- dead end street, we know the regular cars and traffic. AW: gone now. W: Ran my errand, and forgot to take the mail to the big blue mailbox.

Oh, well. More errands anyway!

kathy a. said...

All things considered, the SUV might have been a social worker visiting my next door neighbor, who has struggled with mental health issues over the years. I should keep a more open heart.

(((Sue))) What a good friend, to drive you and support you.

And poor little Sweet. And antibiotics through Christmas!

Ear pain is already diminished. She's pretty tired, from a restless night (as am I). We managed to fit in a doctor's visit, a grocery run, drugstore pickup, bike practice, and a horseback ride, though. She also got a new nebulizer (apparently they are only expected to last 5 years; ours was 8 years old and had started *melting*). The new one is cute! It's a pig named Betty, and she is pink. Sweet picked her out.

If tonight goes well, we're meeting a friend at Big City Zoo tomorrow. I'm hoping it won't be crowded. The weather is supposed to be nice (4 days in a row of highs in the 70's!) and we are taking advantage of it.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Mr. Q's eyes are suddenly, disgustingly goopy tonight, and so he gets to go to the doctor in the morning. Can't we have one Christmas without a gross, infectious disease? (I missed last Christmas thanks to influenza! If there is pink eye on our household this year...)

Sue said...

Hugs and love to all the pixies dealing with sickness right now - be it goopy eyes, infected ears, or the dreaded man-cold. Bleh....

Thanks for all the love yesterday. You're the best.

kathy a. said...

((( Sue )))

QWP, those eye drops do wonders for the pink-eye. But wash everything he touches!

Oy, last day home alone, and somehow my to-do list keeps getting longer! Doing the last grocery run this morning, and I dread thinking about the stupid parking lot there.

Liz Miller said...

QWP: BLEACH EVERYTHING.

The interview went well!! They're contacting my references!

esperanza said...

Hooray, Liz! Hoping they make a decision soon, so you can have a wonderful Christms present!

QWP, and wash it in HOT water, and dry in a HOT dryer. (Towels, sheets, washcloths, etc). Mini had the pinkness without the goop, and it went away on its own (!). May it be so for Mr. Q, too.

kathy a. said...

Go, LIZ!

Well, it turns out that when you forget the shopping list, you will have to make another run, no matter how fabulous the parking karma was on this trip. But I really scored on parking, and the rest of the list is short!

Liz Miller said...

Oy!

esperanza said...

Oh no, the second grocery shopping trip of the day is not good. I might have cried, had it been me.

AW: We survived the Big City Zoo, relatively well. Sweet's energy wore out before we got back out the gate. Piggy-backing her was pretty easy when she was smaller, but she now weighs 52 pounds and got a little heavy. Weather: 80 degrees. I think it's December 23. Parking lot: first row--it pays to get there at opening time!

kathy a. said...

Parking spot for the win, Esperanza! Um, 80 degrees???

I can get the rest at less stressful and closer places.

esperanza said...

84 on the way home. Yeah.

W: The pizza melted all over the oven. AW: My sweetie did a lot of the heavy scrubbing.

AW: Daughter is cleaning the bathroom, and has unloaded years of beauty products that nobody uses. Super AW: She rinsed all those stupid bottles and put them in recycling! Holiday miracle!

Sue said...

(((Waylon)))

Yay Liz!!

Sorry to hear about pinkeye, melty pizzas, extra grocery trips (ugh), and all non-falalalala happenings in pixie world.

I need to tidy up a sermon I wrote last week so that it's ready for tonight. I'm not feeling very Christmas-y yet, but the day is young.

kathy a. said...

My husband has sallied forth to do his holiday shopping, the traditional Eve activity. We finally agreed on money as the main gift for kids, since they can both use it despite both working.

Things are more or less under control. Still a few tiny items to pick up. Will bake squash, make lasagne, and make brownies today. Must continue clearing the fridge to make room. The snowman dish set from my MIL is mostly in the washer; we'll need to do another load later.

Hope y'all have a lovely holiday!

kathy a. said...

My plan to gift the children mainly with money is somewhat foiled, because the ATM machines are afraid I'm defrauding myself.

Miranda said...

I'm dropping by to say Merry Christmas to all my friends here. NL + family hope you are all well took.

This is the last year Daughter will be reading for the service tonight. I may ugly cry.

Merry Christmas! You make my season bright!

A. Nonnie Mouse said...

My spousal unit has declared me "too freaked out" about the holiday, and gone huffing off for a walk. Also, and possibly related -- bonus cranky because my back hurts extra today.

Things will be fine. Guests are not due for hours; stuff is getting checked off the list at a non-frantic pace; dishes for the meal are either easy-prep, or already done and just need reheating. I expect the jolliness to improve this afternoon!

Liz Miller said...

So sorry, ANM. I hope things got better!

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Merry Christmas, everyone! ANM, I hope things improved in the afternoon. (And I hope that spouse actually helped get things together for Christmas, and didn't just get upset with your preparations.)

AW: only one more day of celebrations ahead. It's been good but exhausting.

W: we've been on the go constantly, and Christmas dinners keep being in the early afternoon (aka late for lunch and during naptime). E is operating on very little sleep, at this point. There were a few Christmas morning temper tantrums.

Both Mr. Q and I were a little short with his mother this morning. We got over to their house, and we were informed that some extended family members were coming over in the evening. We said that we would miss seeing them, since we'd have to leave by 5:30. MIL expressed disappointment, and Mr. Q and I said (in unison!), "You can have lunch during naptime, or you can have us here in the evening. You can't have both." (We made sure the feelings weren't hurt, but apparently we're all getting a little tired.)

kathy a. said...

Yay for the united front, QWP! Hope you [and everyone celebrating] had a good holiday!

We had such a lovely time with our family and son's gf + her parents! They brought their dog, so our dog was also in heaven having company. My daughter really likes son's gf, and we really like her parents. I think everybody felt at home. GF's dad even performed the traditional falling asleep on the sofa after dinner. ;)

kathy a. said...

Oh, this is just a small AW -- somewhere far along in the holiday proceedings, I offered several lamps to the guests as "door prizes." (These lamps should have gone to donation, except that didn't get checked off the list in time.) Son's gf took two, and her mother took two also! My son was pretty unhappy with the choice of a rabbit-themed lamp, but his beloved actually wanted the rabbit loveseat we recently unloaded, on the ground that it was the most hilariously tacky thing she'd ever seen, so naturally she *needed* the rabbit lamp. She also took the lava lamp. ;)

Esperanza, I'm thinking of you with all the severe weather in Texas today. XOXOX

esperanza said...

We are at my parents house in Arlington, which is just to the west of the severe stuff. But it looks pretty bad to the east, so thank you. Only light rain and distant thunder here.

Liz Miller said...

Glad you're in a safe place

Queen of West Procrastination said...

W: drums for Christmas.
AW: we will soon have a basement for them, and they are staying with the grandparents until we have said basement.

esperanza said...

Oh, y'all it's very bad to the east of us. Death toll is 8, but I wouldn't be surprised if more are found now that it's light. The destruction looks pretty severe.

Queen of West Procrastination said...

Oh my goodness, esperanza! That is terrible.

kathy a. said...

Yikes, Esperanza!

kathy a. said...

And, what, QWP? Drums?? Kiddie or full-sized? No matter, LOUD; and yay for keeping them with the grandparents for now.

Y'all might recall my angst with the difficult siblings. I don't think I mentioned to son and his gf about de-friending them on the book of visages after receiving one too many admonishments for things they found while stalking me online. But that came up when my sweetie described them on the holiday as "estranged." And then the kids started telling tales, giving the distinct impression they had held comments in. It was quite an entertaining discussion! If I was a better person, I wouldn't feel so affirmed by this development.

On the other hand, a person can only be kicked so many times before calling a time out. Perhaps there will be some changes over time. Here's to a new year!

esperanza said...

Well, yes, it's always good to have your impression of someone confirmed, then you know it's not just you. But I'm sorry.

Death toll was 11 last I heard. F4 tornado by preliminary estimates (scale goes up to 5). Cold, cold rain here today, with some hail for a Baboo-entertaining bonus. We needed some entertainment, since we couldn't go outside.

Liz Miller said...

Esperanza, I'm thinking of you all.

Kathy, isn't it terrific when you have your reality confirmed?

Liz Miller said...

Oy with the drums, QWP. But a basement is perfect for them!

kathy a. said...

Oh, Esperanza. Truly awful weather, and such a terrible toll.

We never get snow, so the couple times hail fell heavily were so exciting when the kids were young. I remember them building little hail-people one time!
